I always found Buddy Rich too Buddy Rich-heavy. I agree, he was an amazing force driving a big band (and his bands were always amazing). But his presence was ill suited, as you say, to the small group setting. Nevertheless, Charlie Parker reportedly LOVED Buddy Rich's playing. So go figure.

From Wikipedia:

"One of al-Atrash's most unusual and distinguishable traits was his voice. High and mellow at the start of his career, it evolved into a wider, deeper sound. A person not familiar with his work would find it hard to believe the singer in "Ya Reitni Tir" (1930s) and "Adnaytani Bil Hajr" (1960s) were the same singer. His singing style was deeply passionate."

Bill Barron's sax sounds so friendly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am

@WR
Dave plays beautifully the role of the sweet-natured curmudgeon. In real life he's just sweet-natured.

That comment makes me want to cry. (Happy tears.)

Oh what might have been with pianist Wade Legge (gracing the ivories here with Sonny Rollins). He died at 29 of a bleeding ulcer.

I took the day off to get some work done. Doug's show is not helping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am
Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
I am expecting a full report on today's broadcast, in triplicate, on my desk by five o'clock.
Avatar 10:54am

Just looked at the list and saw the name of the Rollins tune. I had thought it was "I've grown accustomed to her face"! Now I need to play it back and see how deluded I was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am
Doug Schulkind:

Two thirds of John Coltrane's classic rhythm section here with Joe Henderson. McCoy Tyner on piano and Elvin Jones on drums. (Bob Cranshaw is on bass.)

Just tossing this out here to the Drummerverse: This week is the LAST week of the amazing exhibition, "Milford Graves: A Mind-Body Deal." phenomenal and wide-ranging examination of the professor's life and work. The programming has been amazing and a publication is forthcoming this spring. On view at the Philadelphia ICA for a few more days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am
Doug Schulkind:

@viecher
From your lips to the world's ears! Thanks for sharing that.
Avatar 10:58am

Have to run to a Skype meeting now. Will probably catch the rest on the archive. Thanks, Doug.

@DS love the useful observation re: 2/3s of the trane sound. That's a nice thought.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:59am

Thanks for that, @viecher. Jason Moran is performing a streaming concert this Sunday at 6:30pm ET, as part of that ICA exhibition: icaphila.org...

See the cover art of "Tenor Stylings" -that '50s/'60s LP art was fun.

@Jeff, yes! the concert and Jason's earlier hang with Milford were, and remain, magical. Also,l Jason's new album and related exhibition (currently up at Luhring Augustine in Tribeca) are terrific.

On January 5, Hank Aaron received the first dose of the COVID vaccination at the Morehouse School of Medicine. I haven't see word of the cause of death.

RIP, Hammerin' Hank. You're still the HR King in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Doug Schulkind:

The paragon of grace, class, and breathtaking skill. His greatest accomplishment was his consistency. Other players had higher peaks, but no one stayed as consistently great from beginning to end. Receiving death threats and confronting vicious, racist obstacles all the while. Top of the mountain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
Doug Schulkind:

Love to you and your boys, Mr. Sinner.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am

"If you took away every one of Henry Aaron's 755 home runs, he still would've finished with more than 3,000 hits."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Doug Schulkind:

It would be easy to call Hank Aaron "the secretary of offense" (on the day the U.S. confirms its first African-American Secretary of Defense). But Hank Aaron was a superb fielder as well. Nothing but greatest in his every effort.

I never recovered from the shocked ugly feeling upon learning years later about the crazed scary racist bullshit thrown at Aaron as he closed in on the record. Though it's nearly half a century past, you can't tell me it eroded or improved profoundly, and we see evidence regularly it hasn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am

One keeps hoping that the hate is generational and will die off. Such thinking is a delusional fantasy.

Thanks, man. Not being much of a sports fan I was just looking up HA... He played pro ball for 22 years? Is that normal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am

@rw
It is uncommon. But unmatched was the fact he was an "all-star" for all but the first year of his career.
