Playing my theme song! Jackass that I am....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Sam Segal:

In the words of the Walker Brothers, WR, take it easy on yourself!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
WR:

Believe me, I am going very very easy on myself.
Avatar 10:12pm
Listener Gregory:

A jackass is a very hard working animal. How did it become an epithet for a fool?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
WR:

You and R. Crumb came up with a nice hot version of Somebody Stole My Gal that I didn't know before. Nice and hot.

Interesting point LG. Thinking back to my indoctrination by old cartoons, "braying like a jackass" and also seems cukolded individuals get the it as an epithet.

Gilly:

Been having a bad time lately, but when I turn on WFMU, I know it’ll all be good. Thank you, Sam.

Listener Gregory:

Imagine leading a jazz band and hiring an unknown Louis Armstrong as your supporting trumpet player (King Oliver). You go from the leader of your field to an also-ran in the course of a few weeks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks for defending the honor of the humble jackass, Listener Gregory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm

Great to see you around these parts, Gilly!

During that first set, I was wondering, "Uh oh, have we reached that time in Sam's DJ life *already* where he starts talking in a 105-year-old man voice and fake-bloviating about cigars and a bunker in East Orange, NJ?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Sam Segal:

Hahahaha, Ike, give me a few years, and we'll see. There comes a time when a DJ has no choice but to reach for the 78s.
Avatar 10:27pm
Listener Gregory:

I had a summer job in Orange, NJ for two years in high school/college. I still cannot speak about the bunkers. My memoirs will tell all, though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
WR:

Irwin rarely plays a set of focused hot tunes like that first set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Sam Segal:

July 4th was Louis Armstrong's chosen birthday, so that got me in the spirit.
Avatar 10:49pm
Listener Gregory:

WKCR celebrates two Armstrong birthdays: The 4th of July and his documented birthday, in August. You should have reminded me to listen on the 4th. I totally forgot about it.

Hi folks, just catching up. 1st set woulda been up my alley (on my catch up list). Loving set 2.
LG, I think King Oliver was thrilled to have Satch in his group, they drove audiences wild with their "improvised" harmonized solos (take that, Allman Brothers). Supposedly, King Oliver would show Louis the fingering of what he'd play on the next break, and Satch knew what he'd play and came up with a harmonized line to play with it. King Oliver lost ground when Satch left to go out on his own (promoted by Lil', the pianist and his future wife).

I did post on one of the boards that WKCR was playing Louis 24 hours on July 4 (but while Drummer Shan shows were on-couldn't push this). I think the 24 hour All Satch show was all prerecorded, played from their archives (at least that's what the WKCR web site said).

@doctorj, the sound of your voice is a tonic. Don't stop now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Sam Segal:

Welcome, Doc! It's definitely been a joy catching up with people in real life after so long in semi-isolation. I caught a bit of the WKCR Louis Armstrong broadcast on Sunday. Great radio, as always (pre-recorded though it may have been). Please be as quiet or non-quiet as you please!

Always amazed clarinet pretty much dropped out of jazz and pop pretty much when swing/big band lost popularity (with a few exceptions), until making a comeback 80s and 90s. Sick a cool instrument.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
doctorjazz:

*such a cool instrument...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Sam Segal:

One of my very favorite instruments, especially bass clarinet. I still dream of learning the clarinet one day.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
doctorjazz:

I understand it's relatively hard to play clarinet, at least compared to a saxophone. Bass clarinet is about the same difficulty as the other licorice sticks, except that you need to blow A LOT of air through them to make music.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
doctorjazz:

Really like Chris Speed, saw him (ages ago)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm

Maybe the thing to do is start on sax then.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52pm

i heard Billie Holiday's early recordings with Benny Goodman when i was a wee teen and was blown away by the clarinet... by the dorky school band instrument, the clarinet
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

Those recordings, small group Billie, are classic!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:56pm

yas yas... with just a few exceptions the small band Billie is the only Lady Day i care to hear
