We too well know of all the Machiavellian / Orwellian means this result is manufactured ... Mussolini I am told was originally a Socialist who grew impatient ...perhaps in the end it shows where someone's heart is really @ - if they turn their backs on Empathy & actual People.

@TDK60: not here, the lineage is to Spanish anarcho-syndicalism, from Spanish refugees. Which explains the lingering hate between anarchists and communists. Kronstadt is still a fighting word, too. Infighting is what the left is best at over here

The Left - & Socialism generally maybe - have always been good @ infighting. Obsessed with Principle as they are. Democracy too is of course messy by nature. Whereas what characterizes the Right - & Fascism, which means literally 'to fasten' - is their specific aptitude from marching in synch & in straight lines. Which makes campaigning for the Right & Left entirely different enterprises - despite the Democrats' clear Majority come Election time.

@Jeff: another complication is when I told him his father's name is Jewish, which he didn't know (it's not his or my name, my grandfather died before my father was born). It's messy: my grandfather probably wasn't Jewish, married a Tunisian woman, then dumped her for an Italian, then a French one. All blurry due to war. He died at Mauthausen, in murky conditions, so Nazis thought he was Jewish enough. My father doesn't like that

Yes. A writer so great that (like similarly visionary types) he can't stay in print for more than 10 minutes at a time.

I got life-changing comments while trying (and failing) to read Finnegans Wake. It was like bonding over not making sense of it. It took me 15 years to get through it (don't ask me what it's about)
Avatar 🦀 11:12am
Listener Gregory:

NYRB has republished many of his novels recently, which is how I discovered him. "Caught" is on my desk, waiting for me to try to write a review for GoodReads (which is not needed, I'm sure).
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:13am
adamdoesit:

When I began reading Green, I was always irked that Graham Greene got a whole bookstore shelf, while Henry got maybe an inch. Maybe he shoulda stuck with Yorke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am

NYRB is really doing tremendous work. The book I mentioned earlier is a new translation they commissioned.

(Have not made it to Henry Green, though!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am

His later writing is just too 'poetic' for the average reader of fiction...language that goes beyond the known barriers. *I love 'Caught'. Totally enjoyable.

I was just laughingly remembering how I hauled several hardcover editions of Henry Green (and others) back to Toronto through Newark Airport, having scored them at The Strand back in '89-'90 or so. Ridiculously heavy and absurd.

fred, they say that Finnegan's Wake contains the original recipe for Glen Passaic. Or at any rate that's what the bartender told me when I found an earwig in my glass.

Speaking of Glen Passaic, it's time for me to strap on my cocktail helmet and head out for a little ride. Thanks, Jeff G! See you all at the Stork.

Though one thing I like about her is when execs say nobody cares about artists with "weird" characters in their names, so they'll just remove them. I say "like Beyoncé?", and they go "well, no". She pushed UTF-8 more than any geek in history
