A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Laibach makes me think of the Oktoberfest, that will start next week: Life is Live by Opus will still be played at every beer tent, but when you think of everyone in Lederhosen as Laibach or Palais Schaumburg fan, it is bearable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Derek Westerholm:

Ah, 3 live songs I have never heard. I imagine the listening quality will be terrible, though.
Avatar 8:23pm
Mr Fab:

do Peel Sessions count as live recordings? Some of my fave versions of Fall classics contained therein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Derek Westerholm:

Rich, some live Fall stuff is fantastic, but it's remarkably hit and miss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Rich in Washington:

Ha! That's funny! TBH I didn't hear the original Opus song until well after hearing Laibach's skewering of it but now it's doubly funny.

To almost no one's surprise, Mr. John Lydon had some really nice things to say about the Queen and her family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Derek Westerholm:

Ultra, I forgot about that... Such a good resource, that page
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
ultradamno:

I saw that, I doubt she would felt any better about that song being quoted in a memorial
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Rich in Washington:

Yep. The original is an incredibly insipid pop song. I also like how they found the weird almost fascistic underpinnings in Queen's One Vision. I think they're brilliant, esp their earlier albums.
Avatar 8:26pm
Mr Fab:

Yes Kat, I didn't know for years. Thought it was a Laibach orig. Needless to say, it's VERY dif from the orig. which no doubt made it all the more funny for the Europeans who knew it as a cheezy hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
ultradamno:

@Derek Yeah, some amazing stuff on there.
  8:27pm
Residuum:

Kat: Yes, just like "Geburt einer Nation" (in English: birth of a nation) is a 1 on 1 translation of Queen - One Vision, where every phrase got translated into German in the most fascist way possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Kat in Chicago:

Those wacky Laibachers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Derek Westerholm:

Not sure if Peel sessions count as "live". I count them as sessions recorded in a professional studio w/ an engineer, so I've always categorized them in a different brainspace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Derek Westerholm:

I love Big A Little a so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm

Me too. It's like Crass in a nutshell.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Derek Westerholm:

Rich, I maintain that the live version of Totally Wired from "A Part of America Therein, 1981" is far and away superior to the recorded version. It sounds twice as edgy and, well, wired.
Avatar 8:31pm
TDK60:

Crass vitamins are back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. I keep meaning to check that album out but it's evaded me so far.
Avatar 8:32pm
Mr Fab:

not ELP's version of "Jerusalem," Rich? Not that we really need to hear it, it just popped to mind...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh! I forgot about that! Which ELP LP?
  8:33pm
Residuum:

Kat: Yes, Laibach were an eye opener to me in my youth: a) they came from a communist country, but with a pretty free culture, especially since we had Yugoslav "guest workers" (Gastarbeiter) here, and later refugees from the civil wars, b) they sang in German, but it was not their mother tongue. Oh, and Rammstein are just Laibach without working around a communist regime and with less theoretical background.
Avatar 8:33pm
TDK60:

I saw a short doc-film on singer Steve Ignorant later being in a sea rescue squad.
Avatar 8:34pm
Mr Fab:

Their best, "Brain Salad Surgery"
  8:35pm
Residuum:

OK, that bit about Rammstein is a bit harsh, they are OK, and come from the eastern German punk scene, and later from the theatrical works of eastern German dissident author Heiner Müller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
ultradamno:

Crass also have a live set on that Sheffield Archive page, as well as Rudimentary Peni (or the UK Die Kreuzen, as I like to call them)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Derek Westerholm:

Totale's Turns is also essential live Fall, too, I would say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm

  8:38pm
Residuum:

Rammstein just sold out the olympic stadium here in Munich for 4 nights in a row (50,000 shows each). And there was a controversy about them possibly playing this new year's eve at the Theresienwiese, the site of the Oktoberfest, organized by some outsider promoter, while no local promoter ever got a chance to book the location.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Derek Westerholm:

Kat, that's awesome! What impression did that show leave you with? I saw them 3 times... They didn't go down as my favourite live band of all time or anything, but I definitely would have seen them more often if they visited Toronto after 1994

@abbazabba: There is a website from Oktoberfest haters http://muenchenkotzt.de/ it translates to "Munich pukes", which is an allusion to the famous opening of Thomas Mann's Novella "Gladius Dei" which is "München leuchtete" (Munich was radiating).

There seemed to be no shortage of them in Indiana through the eighties, you pay them for the basement and they didn't seem to care. Zipperhead7:

The highlight of my week was Tuesday, whenI took my daughter Zippelita's oldest friend out for lunch. She was at a mental health facility (voluntary) in Alabama a few months ago and got bored and lonely, so she went on Tinder to see if she could find someone to hang out with. She encountered a local guy and said they should meet but absolutely NO drugs or alcohol. He showed up an hour later, the car reeking of marijuana, and said he had smoked two blunts and was too stoned to drive. But Grace being Grace, she chirped "I'll drive!" Never mind that she didn't know how, being from NYC. So she googled "which pedal is the brake?" I'm not making this up. She told him everything was fine as long as they were on country roads . . . but since he was drooling and “giving directions,” within ten minutes she was on an interstate! She managed to get back safely, miraculously, and he texted her later that night that he believed they "should go their separate ways."
