When I just connected and first heard the track Simorgh with flute I thought it might be Irish or Celtic. Then see it is from Iran. Then you play a Steeleye Span jig that started with some flute and I'm spun around again. So here I am, pleasantly off balance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
Hugo:

Really remarkable that Simorgh piece. I'd never guess it was from Iran. By the way, Baluchistan extends into Pakistan so maybe some crossborder influences there. Quetta in B has a wondeful market for nuts. I can testify to that. I'm nuts about nuts.

Interesting tidbit found on the Wikipedia page for Tar:

"The melodies performed on tar were considered useful for headache, insomnia and melancholy, as well as for eliminating nervous and muscle spasms. Listening to this instrument was believed to induce a quiet and philosophical mood, compelling the listener to reflect upon life. Its solemn melodies were thought to cause a person to relax and fall asleep."

This ex-girlfriend and I were driving thru Oklahoma City one night looking for something to eat. We stopped at the most forlorn salad bar either of us had seen - wilted lettuce, pickle slices, a few black olives floating in murky brown liquid, soggy bread crumbs. We passed on dinner and drove straight to a state owned liquor store that looked like a Department of Motor Vehicles. She bought a big bottle of George Dickel. We pitched our tent someplace east of the city and drank ourselves to sleep.

So chuffed to have this previously unreleased Horace Tapscott recording. It's just been issued. Taken from the same legendary session that produced The Giant Has Been Awakened. EPIC!

Tapscott is getting some more deserved attention. There was a time, maybe the 90's, when there was only the only CD's I could find of his were The Dark Tree (v1 and 2), and aiee! The Phantom. I thought he just hadn't recorded other albums (they were all out of print).
