We stopped at the most forlorn salad bar either of us had seen - wilted lettuce, pickle slices, a few black olives floating in murky brown liquid, soggy bread crumbs. We passed on dinner and drove straight to a state owned liquor store that looked like a Department of Motor Vehicles. She bought a big bottle of George Dickel. We pitched our tent someplace east of the city and drank ourselves to sleep.
