' Pharoah Sanders (born Farrell Sanders; October 13, 1940 – September 24, 2022) was an American jazz saxophonist. Known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound", Sanders played a prominent role in the development of free jazz and spiritual jazz through his work as a member of John Coltrane's groups in the mid-1960s, and later through his solo work. He released over thirty albums as a leader and collaborated extensively with Leon Thomas and Alice Coltrane, among others. Saxophonist Ornette Coleman described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world".
Sanders' take on spiritual jazz was rooted in his inspiration in religious concepts such as Karma and Tawhid, and his rich, meditative aesthetic. This style was seen as a continuation of Coltrane's work on albums such as A Love Supreme. As a result, Sanders was considered to have been a disciple of Coltrane or, as Albert Ayler said, "Trane was the Father, Pharoah was the Son, I am the Holy Ghost". '

This is such a wonderful tribute. Thank you BLT. I was lucky enough to see Pharoah Sanders perform at SF's Stern Grove free summer festival in 2008. He played with a ballet company and I remember his wonderful understated presence, just an old dude in sweats and a beanie. The first segment of his set he just played keys of his sax (no breath/notes). Maximum coolness achieved. RIP

One of the first tracks I reached for after hearing of Pharoah's passing was "Ohnedaruth" from Alice Coltrane's A Monastic Trio LP recorded soon after John Coltrane's Death in '67. When Pharaoh enters on bass clarinet, his expression of grief is so raw and heartfelt, it sends shivers up my spine every time!

" About 4 years after Coltrane's passing, I was fortunate to spend a lot of time with Pharoah and listening to him play. Initially, I was surprised that I did not hear the fiery Pharoah that I used to hear from his time with Coltrane. But that was not what he was doing at that time. Instead everything was slowed down. He was emphasizing the richness of his sound. Pharoah was always very spiritual and his gentle peacefulness spread throughout the audience. At the end of the concerts you could tell that he had made people kinder, gentler and more considerate of one another. People talked to each other even those they did not know in serene and happy tones. It was a beautiful experience and I was privileged to witness the transformation of a great artist to his present enchanting approach."
