(I saw one other RT request show, at the old City Winery. My recollection was at that show he took a shot at more sounds that weren't in his regular repertoir, using more of those lyric printouts. It was fun to see him take a stab at them and pull it off mostly (though he made a valiant, but not successful attempt at "And Your Bird Can Sing" and it's dual lead guitars. Even that was amazing, though he didn't quite pull it off).
I requested Fairport (odds of getting pulled were slim, which I knew going in), Who Knows Where The Time Goes.

Jeff:

Good Morning Bob, Pete + fellow listeners
A quick story re Peter Green. I did not see him play w/Fleetwood Mac, but my late great friend Doc Rock did at Fillmore East (more than once). Anyway, late ‘90s/early ‘00s, I did see Peter and the Splinter Group a few times. It was a thrill to be in the presence of Mr Green(baum), but, usually, Nigel Watson played a lot of lead and Peter was phoning it in. EXCEPT, one night at BB King’s in Manhattan on a double bill with John Mayall (no, they didn’t play together) Doc and I had tix for the early show. I forgot who opened which show, but they switched for the late show. The early set by Peter was, typically, uninspired. They cleared the house for the second show EXCEPT Doc and I hung by the bar hoping to stay for free - which we did. Peter walked right by me during the break, and we shook hands. It was like shaking hands with a dead fish. In any event, the second show starts, and you had to be there to believe it. Peter was playing and singing like it was 1968/1969. Oh Well, Rattlesnake Shake, Green Manalishi, etc. It was unfuckingbelievable! Doc and I kept looking at each other in disbelief. I believe the year was 2000. I didn’t think it was possible (after all those years) for Peter to conjure up that (black) magic again.

Danny Kirwan, bless his troubled soul, was the best addition to any band ever. He was the perfect ingredient for Peter to realize his vision in Then Play On. And, then he helped carry the band after Peter left (Jeremy doesn’t count) along with Christine (who was Perfect) and the underrated Bob Welch. How lucky were John McVie and Fleetwood Mac? Real good rhythm section, but…..

@Jeff: Incredible Splinter Group story! My experience with them was depressingly similar to your "1st set" account: I saw them at Tramps c. 1997 (with Savoy Brown opening. RIP Kim Simmonds) and Peter's playing had all the life of a week-old salad. He played the correct notes more or less, but in an entirely rote fashion.

Gerry from Miami:

Yo, Messrs. Brainen and Tomlinson! And a big "Boy, Howdy!" to Uncle Michael way out there in Lawrence, Kansas! This is a fun retrospective, but three hours isn't nearly enough to capture the enormity of Fleetwood Mac's talent and repertoire. Hopefully, Bob and Pete will do another installment real soon. Till then, happy listening to all the Brainiacs!
  11:45am
dan:

If there is any chance of me personally seeing a group called Fleetwood Mac in concert, it better be Bekka Bramlett handling the female sung songs and not Stevie Nicks. Bring Lindsay Buckingham, Rick Vito and Billy Burnette into the fold and make it a 50+ year long retrospective show.

For me, Fleetwood Mac more than any other band underscores the passage of time. The first time I heard Rattlesnake Shake I was a supple boy confounded by the feelings that were flooding my mind and body. Now I'm a crotchety old man who can't find his wallet. This music is going to bury me.

I read somewhere that after 1991, there was talk of Fleetwood Mac going back to being an all male group with the lineup being Fleetwood, McVie, Vito and Burnette. Throw Welch into the mix and you would’ve had a smokin lineup.

Here’s an interesting story: Bob Welch was recruited to Fleetwood Max through his high school friend Judy Wong who was the band’s secretary. After leaving the band, he formed a short lived band called Paris with Judy’s ex husband Glenn Cornick from Jethro Tull.

Did anyone see an early '71 show when Green stepped in for Spencer? Also, does anyone have "The Act featuring Peter Green," recorded in late 1970 and briefly issued as a download a few years ago?

Hey, @wmfromD: If that Greatest Hits is the one I'm thinking of (CBS c. 72? Red cover?), it only featured Dragonfly, not Purple Dancer. Bob has a European comp (because of course he does!) with both songs, I believe.

I’ve got Jeremy’s first three albums (LPs not CDs). I was such a FM fanatic; I had to have ‘em. Bought them back when they came out. They, basically, suck. Danny’s first album, however, I loved (but, not the ones that followed). Peter (even when digging graves and giving away his money) always managed to put out good records over the years. And, I dare say that End of the Game was great!

Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Sun King and Golden Slumbers is based on the mini medley songs of The Incredible String Band. Ringo’s drum solo on The End was influenced by Ron Bushy’s solo on In-A-Gadda-De-Vida
  12:35pm
Listener Robert:

I've noticed in literature, drama, etc. a tendency of creators to deny that they intended certain allusions that its consumers find. Like it's a game they're playing and they have to keep a poker face or it spoils it?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm

It's not so much that the tune is spoiled, but it means the end of show one is really enjoying (Flute Music at the end of Jeff G's DO Radio has a similar effect)

Dean:

I'm sure that in many cases artists in fact did not consciously intend to emulate another. Then there are cases where they are quite conscious of the debt they owe their predecessors. Early on John Ashbery acknowledged his admiration of Auden (who selected one of Ashbery's early books for the Yale Younger Poets prize).
