A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

For shows like this, I had a Microgranny, a mixer, two CDJs loaded with samples, and a laptop. I would mix my show live with that kind of set-up, while the bands would set-up. So it says "Hoodie Battle" and "JUICE MACHINE," but it includes a little "mixing" and sample-manipulation by me, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm

Roger, from JUICE MACHINE, is in Hoodie Battle. And Roger plays solo, as Chefkirk, too. Roger is rather prolific... we'll get into his story, later.

I did a DJ night a couple of times, playing only things I found in the dollar bin, that you could buy after I played them, at any price you'd like. Less interest than you'd think... (Or than I would think, I guess, to be accurate.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Austin Rich:

I think Rich in Washington was gonna do a purge show, too. It's a good idea. I was thinking of purging CDs... of which I have more than LPs... and gifting them to people would would appreciate them. Might still do that. Who can say?

I would love a show like that, but then again, perhaps we are more similar than I previously knew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Derek Westerholm:

I often buy things I already have out of the dollar bin... Just thinking... "Well, this shouldn't be here"... With the idea of re-gifting & finding a loving home. Which I sometimes do. It brings on a strange sort of feeling of accomplishment. Have I really accomplished something? I feel I have.

Monopoly is definitely family... Something... I always wanted to play Monopoly as a kid... My family often declined, on the prevailing notion that "it takes too long." Pretty much how it goes...

Mr X, i've known people to shun the game because it's based on capitalism, but i think it's more as you say.

...but i liked it as a child because it sharpened my strategical skills to be up against my older brother and my mother.
...but in my family also it was a fairly rare game night because of the time commitment

When I was a kid, I feel like every game of Monopoly ended in an argument, a fight, and us kids being angry with each other for the rest of the day.

my parents didn't allow the sale of houses or hotels until maybe an hour into the game, so no one would get shut down too early in the game.
they were good sometimes.

So was Brautigan considered a Beat, or part of the Beat Generation?

Oooo. I like that house rule. That does make the game build slower.

Brautigan was sort of between the Beat Generation, and the Hippie Generation, and as a result, sort of didn't fit into either scene.

for a couple of years i photographed damaged or failing in some way xmas decorations; and discarded trees and decorations; and any other xmas failures.
i had a capitalist plan for them but never did it.

Most of his youth, up until he started getting published, he lived in Eugene, OR. He did write in Eugene, and has even written some stories about Eugene. But his literary career really began in San Francisco.
