Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from January 27, 2023 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

When I was thirteen years old I was in bed one night listening to Jimmy Rabbit on KRLA in Pasadena. He played Mona. It was a good thing I was laying down because otherwise I would have fallen on the floor. Later, I mentioned it to a friend of mine. "I heard it too!" he yelped. Right then and there we made a vow to see The Quicksilver Messenger Service the next time they came to L.A. We did. It was my first rock concert.

Actually htheearing quite a bit of Beatles on FMU recently-particulaly in the shows geared to 60s-70s Rock (Big Planet Noise, Discoteque Underground, just about anything on the Rock n Soul Stream, others). If I'm overexposed to Beatles, it's me doing the overexposure. I have a higher tolerance for Beatles than anyone I personally know (if not know of).
Find the analogy of Food Diet to Musical Diet to be quite serviceable. Beatles for me is like ...bread or rice & beans or spaghetti or something you'd just eat all the time as a basic. If not the varieties you'd eat to not die of boredom. Yet ...it's also the History & Culture & Details I'm endlessly engaged in too - with themed podcasts & such just making it bigger all the time now.

I definitely fell into the "overexposed" camp-listened a ton while they were releasing records (and every single got Royal treatment on the radio), knew all the albums inside and out (American releases, stereo, a true heathen). Took quite a while until I'd put them on at home, but now I do love hearing them again (and have got the anniversary "Special Edition" releases, the "Complete" box set, all the rediculous stuff they're still selling.
Had the same thing with Grateful Dead music, love to hear it now, but needed a break after listening a ton when they were around.

Quicksilver Messenger Service's "Happy Trails" remains tied for first place in my mind for best album to come from San Francisco in the 1960s. I've not heard anything over the decades to change my mind. Seeing John Cippolina's speaker system on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum was a highlight of our visit.
