The Barman:

*NOTE PINNED TO THE BAR*

Hello you lovely Frigateers. I have been called away unexpectedly to the jewel of the north - Manchester - to deal with a lysergic emergency in the Deansgate area of the city. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.

Have a wonderful time tonight, and remember:

Groove is the key in Seventy Three...

Your friend,
The Barman

Sometimes I just think Americans just have a mental quota of how many British bands we can accommodate at any given time, on a sliding scale. Thanks, PK! I am trying to share my stuff, because I welcome comments, including critical ones. So, here goes:

Skyline

Of the liminal
The region where rooftops
Shy away from the sky
And atmosphere retreats
Is a fair example.
We see this when children
Gaze dispiritedly aloft
After losing grip of the string
Of a bright balloon.
The ephemeral orb, barely a comma,
Bobbing along on a preordained flight,
Is elusive in its steadfast obedience
To the whimsical dictates of physics.
The built world of horizontal parallels
Affords no means to ascent
To cold, empty, cosmic distances,
But instead to a strictly articulated
Array of transverse tiers,
Two-dimensional elements
Of the image of the city,
Sandwiched edges,
Thresholds, and latitudes.
Streets, eaves, sidewalks, driveways,
Trellises, pediments, bridges,
On- and off-ramps,
Downtown roundabouts
Curled and twisted, but flat on a plane
From the perspective of depth obscured.
Even the very avatars of the sublime,
Spires of Gothic cathedrals,
Succumb to gravity inarticulate,
The subliminal.

I can only imagine what it must have been to listen to the Germs for the first time in the late 1970s. From what I understand, it may have been one those few proper proto-hardcore bands. Speaking of Kitten Sparkles, there was this really great Germs tribute episode of Fantastic World of Kitten Sparkles where Don talked in detail about how he got involved with the Germs, his first impressions of the band and what it was like to be in the band.
