Favoriting February 11, 2023: 274 Checkerboard Radio (1)

I first learned about The Checkerboard Time Radio Show and especially The Cackle Sisters through the 365 days project assuming these were all the recordings we have of the Dezurik Sisters. Recently I found a bunch of complete episodes of Checkerboard Time not only co-featuring other artists, but also some Cackle Sister songs that aren't in the list on WFMU's beware of the Blog linked above.
Being completely in the dark when (late 30s/mid 40s?) or what order they aired, I numbered them at my discretion.

Old time radio shows were often sponsored by manufacturers like Martha White's Flour sponsoring the Grand Ole Opry radio shows or King Biscuit Time.

Yes, that can't be his real name, can it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Any idea who it really is?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Krys O.:

Well, in the South anything is possible with names, but it likely isn't his name.

Oh, I just spotted Ike Everly's name in the second KMA pdf. He was Phil and Don's dad. He put them on the radio as kids.

Ike Everly had a show on KMA and KFNF in Shenandoah in the mid-1940s, first with his wife and then with their sons. The brothers sang on the radio as "Little Donnie and Baby Boy Phil".[13] The family sang as the Everly Family.[14]

Jan and Krys joining forces for old time radio stuff sounds like some super hero comics group. Someone with graphic talent (ie: not me) should draw cover art for it (maybe with MHLee thrown in)

The name of the lady singer isn't mentioned. I wonder if it's that same Nancy Lou (Lew?) as in the first episode..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
fred:

I missed the start of the show because I took advantage of a lull at the supermarket checkout line to chat with the attendant. Older immigrant ones often have stories once I show some knowledge of their country's music.

typo alert, I think, shouldn't "Tap Town Races" be Camptown.

also great to hear these Checkerboard Cackle segments in their relative context. My CD is just their appearances and there's an intro before every song, so it's agonizingly repetitive, but maybe that's my neurology talking.
