Hey, Gary. I hope you don't mind if I chip in with analysis, biographical notes, and insights throughout today's show. The only reason I can imagine that you might object is because I know nothing about Sakamoto and his music. But I'm a fast learner.

Emily! I was literally thinking about you today and wondering what you were up to!
  8:33pm
Dean:

Good question, @ngh. I'd been there before long ago, but last summer I was in Denver. Prior to that, another follow-up visit to Baltimore. The last time I dropped into a city for the first time was...Philly a decade or so ago? Found a great restaurant, but it was so long ago that I don't recall the other excursions. I was there, as is usually the case since I don't generally like to travel at all, on business.

That’s impressive, Gary. What do you do in the second month?

Dean:

I hate planning travel, so I let others do it for me. Best case in point, in '84 I followed Les Arts Florissants and the Clemencic Consort on their respective tours around Europe. I even traveled and roomed with LAF. I did this because I wanted to hear their music, not because I wanted to visit, say, Linz. If see no reason to wander beyond a radius of 20 miles from where I live to find new spaces and places.

Franco Twinkie:

In 1979 a friend of my girlfriend worked in the warehouse at A&M Records. One day he gave me the Yellow Magic Orchestra record with the lady with big sunglasses and wires coming out of her head. "The cover of this album makes me think of you, I have no idea what it is" I didn't know what to make of it. I traded it for rent money, I think. Now it's worth a ton of money. The guy who gave it to me went on to be one of the writer/producers on The Sopranos.

@Franco, console yourself with the thought that rent has also gone up a huge amount, so the album is effectively worth the same.

I sold Joy Division's "Dead Souls" single for $150 c.1995. It's now worth, I dunno, ten times that amount? Rents haven't gone up that much.

True that. last week I went back to where I lived in 1979. The rest was $150 when I moved in a year earlier. The place is a historical landmark. They were fixing up a unit to rent. I asked the manager what it was going for - $2,200. Everything is relative as they say.

Last night I couldn't figure out how to pay the trash-pick up at my moms house online - Chresti did, it despite the fact she had to go to bed. The invoice was posted before I went to bed. This afternoon the trash truck was going to pass the house without picking up the trash until I ran out in the street screaming.

"couldn't figure out how to pay"
How is it that the burden of "figuring out how to pay" has now fallen upon the buyers?
This is that moment in every day of my life when I thank God that Steve Jobs is dead and gone, and when I ponder how best to move us this much closer to a healthy regime of communism.
