I always just look at straight edge as just one of the many “evolutions” that the whole punk rock / hardcore could’ve gone. I think like most youth subcultures, it just comes down to whats in the groove 45 years later or whatever… Because a lot of punk rock from 1977, 1978 still sounds great, but that whole scene and a lot of its trappings can seem quite quaint in retrospect to someone who was born, say, the year 2000.

I think the one word I'd question is "codified." Punk is, obviously, codified to a degree, but I think some of my favorite bands in 2023 continue to expand and break those codes to this day — think IDLES, Viagra Boys, etc... Just putting it out there for the sake of argument :) I'll also admit "anarchy" might be a strong word. Maybe what I should have said is that punk seemed fairly open and accepting of a wide swath of personalities (besides hippies :), until Straight Edge came along and you had to meet their standards or you were out.

I always just look at straight edge as just one of the many “evolutions” that the whole punk rock / hardcore could’ve gone. I think like most youth subcultures, it just comes down to whats in the groove 45 years later or whatever… Because a lot of punk rock from 1977, 1978 still sounds great, but that whole scene and a lot of its trappings can seem quite quaint in retrospect to someone who was born, say, the year 2000.

I think the one word I'd question is "codified." Punk is, obviously, codified to a degree, but I think some of my favorite bands in 2023 continue to expand and break those codes to this day — think IDLES, Viagra Boys, etc... Just putting it out there for the sake of argument :) I'll also admit "anarchy" might be a strong word. Maybe what I should have said is that punk seemed fairly open and accepting of a wide swath of personalities (besides hippies :), until Straight Edge came along and you had to meet their standards or you were out.
