Gets to feeling a horrible cliche to say an Artist was a 'Force of Nature' - but Coltrane did say that aligning with Nature was the most one could hope for. Even thru my ignorant Brötzmann's was a not wholly unfamiliar name - & it's clear his playing was muscular, the definition of endurance, committed & unrestrained. Seems fairly apparent also this was his personality - both momentous & unpresuming.

As with life-drawing, I've experienced that it's more a case of 'getting out of nature's way'. where that can be managed, from one moment to the next, nature gets through and all the magic in the universe reveals itself. But the ego is very stubborn, so it's harder than it might seem

Well, with Creating ...there's getting out of one's own way to let other less familiar (to the conscious ego) parts of oneself come thru ...I take a basically Jungian view that @ some point, distinguishing between that & 'Nature' more broadly (& 'all the magic in the universe') is - unnecessary. & as for making Music - especially with others? (which I've done far too infrequently) - most treasured are those times one is both listening to & creating it @ once - & then it transcends all such distinctions - & it is all Just Happening.

Brötzmann talks about the different Euro jazz hot spots -- notably England, France, Netherlands, Germany -- and how the German contingent definitely had its own sound and approach, even relative to other developing European jazz scenes. Relating to that 30s LA immigration, I just finished Salka Viertel's memoir last week. It wasn't what I expected, but in retrospect I'm not sure what I was expecting. It's more of a family story than scene report, but still, all those early 20th century European intellectuals appear at some point on one side or the other of the Atlantic.

Now reading Eve Babitz' "Eve's Hollywood" (I'm on a book sequence of women writing about California) in which we find that Stravinsky was a family friend in her childhood.

Thanks, Hyde. Weirdly, NYPL doesn't seem to have a copy. Adding to my Thriftbooks list.

A former barista at the neighborhood coffee shop would indeed play Brötzmann and his ilk, but also Feldman, Cage, and other "out" musics. He was the guy who booked Drake. During pandemic he won a grant to travel to make field recordings. Haven't seen or heard from him since his departure.

Maybe she lived near Warren Zevon. Stravinsky was his childhood piano teacher, down the street, for a while.

Viertel's book fit amazingly well with previous reads, "The Books Of Jacob" and "Speaking East" (Isidore Isou biography).

Hadn't realized RSJ was born in 1940, was he the oldest member of Prime Time (after Ornette)?
Intriguing gap in RSJ's recorded legacy: only a handful of records between 1966 (several ESP) and Body Meta (1975)

It feels like starting from a composition and then departing requires crediting. But does starting way out there and then ending up on "Green Dolphin Street" or a Misha Mengelberg tune (as on Schwarzwaldfahrt) seem different somehow? Pondering...
