Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from September 26, 2023 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I think we talked about this a little in e-mail: it's funny the things we push away as young people, that was perfectly great.

I was not into the Soft Boys for a LONG time for some dumb reason. Then, one day, a roommate put it on, and it clicked.

I need to listen to familiar stuff when I am cleaning or exercising. Otherwise I get distracted. After that, if there is time, I genuinely like to make time to sit and listen to music like it's a movie. I don't always do anything else. It's a rare and precious thing, but like any bad movie, you know if it is worth the investment right away, and maybe some things can come again during periods of less commitment.

Halloween on MVM is all month long, to coincide with the Hellraiser at WFMU! The Ramen City Kid, Mike Watt, Xeres of Xeron and Heather Zajkowski are among the guests! We get lost in a haunted house! We're taking calls and having YOU tell your ghost stories! We're playing single songs by people who have passed for "Singles Going Steady... to the Grave" week. And I wrote an entirely new episode of MST3K... on the radio, for you to enjoy! October is gonna rule. Join us, won't you? You won't be sorry.

I used to try and make sure I don't play the same thing on the show twice. (And for the most part I don't do a lot of repeating.) But in recent years, I've become a lot more lax about that. If the song works, go with it!

That said: I do still try to go new places when I can.

I get to think about what I have never played on air before and decide if it's worth it. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, never played them before, but is it necessary? They aren't bad, but does the world need it? What does it add to a situation? I never know when the last show is gonna be!

I still think of my shows like long mix-tapes, and that was certainly how I approached them at the beginning. But I think now my idea of what makes a good mix has evolved, and includes more kinds of things. When I started, you probably heard way more abrasive punk and mostly unlistenable "layered" mixes.

Sometimes it's still that... but... you know... now quite as loud?

When I do a mix, I go for what I'm feeling, usually, or what my arbitrary theme is. Or what secret message I'm trying to convey to someone who will never get the message, old time mix tape stylee. It is always a thrill to go to log a song at WAYO and find the band name doesn't autocomplete, though, meaning I'm the first to play them. I'm pretty pedestrian, though, so it's only, like, The Mabuses.

Very much a mix tape. Some of my shows prior to leaving WLUW were for a certain lady or two. But my emphasis can be on kinds of reverb or certain words or different ways similar moods are expressed, things like that. Making rules and breaking them and then building up again.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:57pm

But I do recall, early on, thinking, "I need to make a tape that is just a good tape..." And I sort of think of that as the original radio show thinking.
