Lost my father in 2005 - & been thinking about it again recently as a matter of fact. We were pretty distant - well, he was pretty absent, if dutiful labor-wise & such - with much generation gap & all that - but a lot of who & what I am reflects him anyhow. Things got worse for him really in his last years - but ironically maybe better & more grown up between us - & I was fortunate to be there for some of his last moments. Which was an experience like no other I've had. My mother otoh is still with us - & has entered her 90s. There's a certain kind of conversation with her I want to have while we still can - about my more grown up perspective on the conflicts we had when I was young & full of needs not addressed & energy undirected. Many regrets - but also gratitude for their hard work & being raised by people with some good values ...a lot more than a lot of children get in this World.

My high school marching band had been selected as the representative marching from Maryland to come perform at the 50th birthday celebration for Mickey Mouse. It happened to be the Memorial Day Weekend, 1979. It was sweltering in the Orlando sun, and we were all wearing our black, wool marching band uniforms. I was toting the bass drum. When I was real young we drove up North to the White Mountains here - that's as Murikan BourgeoisTrash ThemePark Vacationy as we got... & to this day what people do in Real Lives & post on social media about remains as abstracts to think about for me. Ah, Jeff. Sympathies and empathies to you and your family. I had a feeling something like that happened.

As for me, Mom fell, again, at the end of July and my 24/7 caregiving jumped a few multiples in intensity. But she's okay, healing wonderfully quickly, hoping the ortho doc lets her get back to using her right arm at the checkup this week.

So my 'FMU listening has been pretty catch-as-catch-can in the archives these days.

Best wishes, Jeff and everyone.

Is the name a riff on “third steam” or something? What are the first three ways? Or is it a about Tao?

Isn't there some kind of mystical meaning to the term? In 1969, everyone knew that kind of thing.

Apparently the term was invented by Gurdjieff and as further developed by Ouspensky: 'The Fourth Way addresses the question of humanity's place in the Universe and the possibilities of inner development. It emphasizes that people ordinarily live in a state referred to as a semi-hypnotic "waking sleep," while higher levels of consciousness, virtue, and unity of will are possible.' (Obv)
