DG:

Great Gildersleeve's was at 331 Bowery, while CB's was at 315 (I think). Same side of the street, and only 1-2 blocks (?) from each other. Was in a band in the early '80s that played GG a lot in '81-2, more than CB's (which I think we only did 2-3 times during my time in the band). GG's seemed to have a lot of metal bands (we once opened for a band called The Rods, and Clive Davis himself came to see their set) so not sure why they booked us so much (we were kinda Blondie-Bongos'---influenced). Also GG ony last 6 years or so (closed in '84).

Good question. Maybe ? It's a fairly common Recording Technique.
Well ...Lennon also spoke with reasonable objectivity about the specific qualities of his Voice & Singing. Yet many - George Martin example - will tell you John always wanted it treated & modified & was frustrated...
There's plenty of Live Lennon to bear witness to the raw product ! :D
If you watch those YouTubes analyzing things - Lennon did the thing of not emphasizing noted & parts with his diaphragm - but overdriving his vocal chords up into his head. AN analog to stomping on the sustain box for a Gittar. Maybe ?? But then - the opposite physically - using your own physique to push it...
