I feel like this show missed an opportunity to have a "boy sidekick." Rocky could regularly put his life in danger, teach him how to lie to cops, etc.

All the useful things in life.

Dean:

Why is radio theater so compelling? I can't bear to watch a movie. The acting is (by definition according to me) non-existent, and the same goes for radio. Sinatra's just this side of awful as a thespian. But I don't care.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Dean @9:18
I have no good answer for you, but I am hooked, too. While I do find Sinatra sort of entertaining, even if he is sort of phoning in the performances here and there.

↳ Song: ""Pint-Size Payroll Bandit"" by "Rocky Fortune"
I'm surprised this show doesn't shy away from the fact the father beats the child. While this show really doesn't do much with it, I'm still surprised it's in here at all. Seems like a detail that could easily have been dropped, but is brought up a couple times. Seems like a strangely modern detail to include, though I'm sure it was just as much of an issue in any era.

I don't think child beating is modern, and I imagine it was a much more acceptable as a dramatic element way back when. Nowadays, certain difficult behaviors are off-limits in pop media.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm

↳ Dean @9:27
In a way, it's almost more normal to just include it as a fact, and have it be a texture to the show.

My big regret in life is not opting to go an see The Magnetic Fields when they were touring on "69 Love Songs." I was really not sure who they were, and I was convinced that seeing Daniel Johnston for the umpteenth time was a better use of my time.

Now I regret the choice, especially since I saw Daniel a few times after that.

In episode one of this show, the kids, their mom, and Uncle Frank went out to search for Robert Regent. The episodes in-between have essentially been a "farce" of them all running around, "almost" finding Robert. This is finally the pay-off of them looking for their dad for 70 episodes, where nothing happened.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

You could reduce the first 70 episodes to three 15 minutes installments and basically you would get the same story.

↳ Song: ""And The Moon Be Still As Bright"" by "X-Minus One"
When I decided that I wanted to re-listen to the entire run of "Dimension X / X Minus One," and air it like this, I really wanted to re-created the experience, as close as I could, to the one that the fans would have had back when these shows first aired. To that end, I only repeat episodes when the producers of the show officially sent the episode out again, to be heard on most affiliate stations. Like in this case, when they chose to slot this one in.

Dean:

And he wrote the screenplay to Moby Dick.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Austin Rich:

On the subject of X-Minus One re-runs, and trying to listen to them in order: the effort is sort of futile, as individual local affiliates would just air whatever they wanted, on any day they wanted, to fit their own local needs. And transcriptions discs were sent by mail, so they could get lost, broken, or whatever. And, lastly: some stations would skip episodes if they didn't they they would like it, or would just re-play a local favorite, when they weren't sure of a new story.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Austin Rich:

All of that is a long way of saying: while there is some "modern" consensus as to the "order" these episodes should be heard, unlike the way we consume media now, back then it would be different from station to station, region to region. Which itself is pretty cool, I think.

I might keep "X-Minus One" going for a while, after "the last episode," and air some "fan faves" to replicate that experience. It'll be a while, but I've been considering what to do after we get to the "end" of that series.
