Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Sense of humor has in fact been a factor in marital dissolution proceedings, e.g., this 1970 case out of Idaho:

"The Supreme Court...held that fact that former wife who had custody of couple's children married man of ‘questionable’ character who was 22 years older than wife, had been in much trouble with police over small crimes for many years, played childish pranks on police and law enforcement officers, and had sadistic sense of humor showed such change of circumstances as to justify change of custody to former husband who had remarried and had adequate home."

Just put together 10 record racks, now to organize the records and fill them (much bigger jub than putting the racks together)

↳ Song: "Commewijne" by "Theo Loevendie Quintet"
"Loevendie identifies [Commewijne] as a typical Dutch chorale, like you'd find in Surinam; sounds a bit South African, reminder of Afrikaaaners' Dutch roots." (Kevin Whitehead, New Dutch Swing)

Not too many years ago I had to build a studio in our backyard to accommodate the records. It's almost at capacity. But I know that mine isn't "bigger" than others'. I gave up on that competition long ago.

The reason CA ignores fault is due to a professor of mine, the late beloved Herma Hill Kay. She promoted no-fault divorce in California, from where it reached other jurisdictions. Herma was amazing. When I was in law school, I'd sit with her on the bus ride to campus. She took public transportation! I took her family law class near the end of my three years at Berkeley. I got a little cocky and contrarian (who, me?!), offering opinions in class that ran against the norm. One day after class she remarked that she really enjoyed what I was doing, because it made the students think more deeply about alternative points of view. Bravo to me.

Moisture hasn't been an issue. The bigger issue is sunlight, but I have adequate shades.

Dean:

The backyard studio is tiny, at the maximum square footage before Berkeley gets all bureaucratic and stupid. No plumbing.

Of course, helps to be in the biz (I have a buddy who used to work for ASCAP-he collected I don't know how many thousands of records, lived in a house on Long Island, then decided to move to an apartment in Manhattan, obviously no space for them. He copied all the music to hard drive, then one day, I went over (had limited time), and, if you remember the old show Supermarket Sweep, I ran through his house with some boxes and loaded them up with I don't know how many CDs. We arranged the rest to be donated to WFMU).

Also Ralph Sharon's birthday today! Would have been 100! But passed in 2015. Best known as Tony Bennett's pianist since the 1950s.

"copied to hard drive": we are doomed. See Cliff Lynch's marvelous piece, Stewardship in the "Age of Algorithms." He doesn't poo-poo hard drives, but expresses a general concern about durable media.

One MUST judge records by their covers, but this one is not at all off-putting. My favorite shitty cover is a recital of Telemann chamber works with a cover featuring a painting by Degas. The fuck?! I love it.
