A couple years ago when Criterion came out with their Godzilla box set, I had to promise myself that I’d finish watching all the Zatoichi’s before buying it!

I learned that the actor who plays Zatoichi was supposed to play the lead part(s) in the Kurosawa film Kagemusha (the one about a double who fills in for the warlord). He was fired on the first day in a bizarre dispute with Kurosawa. Too bad.

Apparently the actor showed up with his own camera crew that was supposed to shoot him working on the part and being directed by Kurosawa. Strangely, Kurosawa did not care for this idea.
