Well, I haven't liked much DeNiro or Scorsese has done in the last 25 years or so (and probably at least one of them did not need to be involved in this project), but I thought this was really egregious. As Becky said, it was BORING. But I think it was because it was so lazily done. Using DeNiro was barely defensible because that guy has been pure gesture for decades, but using him for young and old is indefensible. (Casting another actor as the young version might have at least set up an interesting resonance with Godfather II, for what it's worth.) It was schlocky and off-putting and, again, just LAZY as a choice in filmmaking. I thought the whole thing was just finance and gesture: We spent all this money on it, and it's US! Telling the story of problematic, ethnic American MEN! You just gotta know that's POWERFUL. Ugh. It was trying to ride reputation for, as far as I could tell, no reason other than to secure and justify its budget.

And BORING.
