For example, the knife edge is always facing the plate rather than outward to imply that it will be used on the food rather than the person sitting next to you. I wonder if that comes from Erasmus? He also recommended that people not blow their noses into the tablecloth, and that if one encounters a piece of gristle, simply toss it into a corner so the hounds will find it later.
