Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from October 13, 2023 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I was five years old when I saw Little Oscar do a guest spot on Bozos Big Top. He said he was going to be at the Thriftymart in Tujunga. My mom was brushing her hair in the bathroom mirror. I asked her if she would take me to see the Wienermobile, "Where?" she asked. "The Thriftymart in Tujunga." She started howling with laughter. "What!?" I implored. Do you know how far away Tujunga is!?"

@Dean. I dig a lot of off-the-wall stuff in all genres: music, film, literature, you name it. But the Residents still remain in my "inscrutable" and "enigmatic" category. Always worth investigating, but often indecipherable. Anybody out there in the same confused state?
  12:56pm
Dean:

I hear you, Gerry, but I'm pretty sure I "get" the Residents, for the most part. However, they have such a huge catalog that it's easy to gloss over much of it and dwell on a select few, e.g., Eskimo, Commercial Album, the American Composers series...

@dan. Kudos to WHLI! But(now don't get out your calculators!) I was privileged to see the Five Stairsteps w/ Cubie at the Tower Theater in Phiadelphia in 1965 as one of the opening acts for the headlining Temptations. My roommate and I were about to start our sophomore year of college and were the only white people in the audience(!). One of the other acts was Dyke and the Blazers doing "Funky Broadway"(did their version precede Wilson Pickett's?). There were a couple of other bands, but my memory fails me at this late date. Admission was 5 bucks, if I recall. Don't know how young Cubie was, but the whole family comprising the Stairsteps were all still young kids. And they were quite good, but had a relatively short career, compared to other "kid" bands like the Jacksons.
