Malcolm McLaren on Gameboy culture, mashups, and music fashion
from a 2004 radio interview and playlist.

Artist Track Album Label Year Comments Approx. start time
Sex Pistols  God Save the Queen   Favoriting Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols  A&M/Virgin  1977  Controversial song by the English punk rock band included on their only studio album. Credited to Paul Cook, Steve Jones, John Lydon, Glen Matlock. Malcolm McLaren "managed" the band, tweaking their look and renaming bandmates Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten.

Malcom McLaren  The Look of Music (Part 1)   Favoriting Art Radio WPS1  Clocktower Radio Archives  2004  Entrepreneur, impresario, composer, producer Malcolm McLaren (1946-2010) in a 2004 interview for the now defunct WPS1 radio station out of the museum now known as MoMA/PS1. Rich with music projects (mashups, Gameboy music, Japanese anti-pop) and loaded with reflections, projections, and opinions (some of which you might find objectionable, or just wrong... but he was pointing in the right direction; he just couldn't quite see over the horizon, just like the rest of us!). Hosted by PS1 founder Alanna Heiss and Music Director Lokke Highstein. In this first segment McLaren discusses a track of his that wound up in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill 2 as the theme for Uma Thurman's, character; a community self-described as "reversible "engineers"; musical hacking, and more...  0:07:18 (Pop-up)

Malcom McLaren  The Look of Music (Part 2)   Favoriting Art Radio WPS1  Clocktower Radio Archives  2004  McLaren discusses Gameboy culture, folktronica, the vinyl trend, his concept of a "Karaoke world", and authenticity.  0:37:06 (Pop-up)

Malcom McLaren  The Sound of Fashion (Part 1)   Favoriting Art Radio WPS1  Clocktower Radio Archives  2004  McLaren on the romanticism of failure, his influential London fashion stores created with Vivienne Westwood--featuring retro-couture to S&M-inspired "anti-fashion" apparel, mashups that provide a soundtrack to the conceit, and extreme Karaoke.  1:02:38 (Pop-up)

Malcom McLaren  The Sound of Fashion (Part 2)   Favoriting Art Radio WPS1  Clocktower Radio Archives  2004  McLaren continues about Chinese re-engineering of Western pop, their fascination with Hollywood cinema, and a beguine mashup with Lord Buckley and a French girl group.  1:34:56 (Pop-up)
Malcom McLaren  Buffalo Gals   Favoriting Duck Rock  Charisma, Island, Atco, Atlantic  1983  The track that introduced England to hip-hop culture (with a white, British MC), and the music video showing breakdancing (by the Rock Steady Crew) as well as rapping, scratching, and graffiti.  1:48:49 (Pop-up)

Digging the show, David! Interview and tunes are great! This is reminding of a chip music show that I attended a few years ago. There were djs and a sampling of 100 different flavours of potato chips. The music was better than the buffet. ;)

strikes me that mcclaren had an optimistic view of technology and authenticity back then, wonder if he would still have that view with artificial 'intelligence', a different kettle of fish. i know of a musician, a sitarist, in london who uses a.i. and ends up sounding like john williams. maybe a bad use of a.i. or a flawed characterstic of a.i.
