I grew up in Grand Rapids, MI. When I was a teen in the 80s there really was not much of a music scene there. BUT there was an excellent record store and the owners were total Anglophiles. They brought in all the British music mags and so many 12” singles and import LPs. I was really fortunate. I got My Bloody Valentine and Wedding Present records before they were available on US labels. That’s where and when I got my Felt records.

a good local record store can be life-changing. for me, it was real records in houston. the owner, ronnie bond, was also the singer in really red, and he hipped me to so much good music. during my senior year of high school, i used to drive my classmates off-campus for lunch. in exchange, they'd buy me lunch. i'd then go to real records after school and spend my lunch money on records. often, ronnie had been working alone all day, so he'd give me some money to go buy him food, and tell me to get myself something to eat too. it was a great year.

Yes, he set up at record shows throughout the area and had an antique mall booth in Holland. I saw him at a show in the early part of December and it wasn't long after that he went into the hospital.
