Yeah, there was a lot of "oh she's just a Kate Bush imitator" criticism (Primus wrote a whole song about it) which was sexist, shallow criticism. Nobody was dismissing Green Day as The Jam wannabes or Trent Reznor as being a Throbbing Gristle tribute band. Yeah there was influence, but in the same way that Robyn Hitchcock was paying tribute to Syd Barrett but doing his entirely new thing.

Just for myself - meaning that - thot Tori was like Kate ...but - why not ? That being actually less true - yeah, another matter.
All kinds of people reamark(ed) on GreenDay not being so Original. (My take - them in mind specifically, even : Originality *is* a virtue & an asset. But ...just one of them...)
Reznor I've thot of as - whatever else (not in fact someone I've trouble to listen to in particular) - @ least a Producer with his own sound. Maybe that's *less* true than I've known (ha)...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm

tori downplayed kate's influence on her, probably as a reaction to the critiques. and you're right: that was pretty lazy criticism. i found out about kate in 1985 and tori in 1992 and while one can draw a line between the two, the two were also so clearly different. in any case, tori eventually owned up to kate's influence and there's certainly no shame in that!

Didn't Tori Amos have kind of a feminist punk background before her crossover success? Y Kant Tori Read? And I seem to remember an I Am Kurious Oranj connection? Am I making all this up? I admit that records from that era are spotty at best. At least, the personal logs are.

One looks @ the track listing of 'Between The Buttons' - & it seems great enuff. Yet - doesn't seem to play to their strengths as an Album & a Band ?? They seemed to be groping for exactly the right Sound in '67 maybe... 'Aftermath' seemed mighty enuff as a Statement ! (TheBeatles being a little ahead of ...the Universe - in terms of understanding Albums as distinct wholes, I reckon. Even if not entirely consciously...)
& Satanic Majesties - perhaps the archetypes of the critically defamed Album nonetheless beloved of all the People one speaks to individually. Or - was.

I used to drive my parents crazy as a kid because I read an article about The 13th Floor Elevators and was absolutely obsessed with the idea of them so I wanted to hear their CDs and in the pre-internet era you couldn't find them in Southwest Florida. My hippie parents were from the Michigan psych scene and had no clue who they were! They thought I had made them up! I didn't get an album from them until my first trip to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. The streaming era has made things much easier: those first two studio albums are perfect.

Yeah. Just had an exchange with a Boomer (proper) who only knew the Elevators as 'support' on psychedelic posters. Whereas those of us who took the left hand path into more Underground Musics were made quite aware of them via Nuggets & then the entire GarageRawk ~ 60s Punk community.
Do think there is a thing of fantastic 1960s meisterwerks (as well as - the rest of it..) which are fresher for us cause of, in fact, less general popularity - & so - less overexpose over the decades. a happy 2024 to you too! Sadly missed Boxing Day's show, but absolutely loved the previous weeks' ones, even if I was not on the accu.

This album title would make a great name for a WFMU program.

During the Miranda Sex garden show I saw I had no idea who the support acts were but during this song I went "wait a minute, Julie's show.... Kristeen Young is on stage, OK!"

Thank you all for this journey. Depression is not always fun, but music is magic and it keeps us going.
