A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Capitalism as its basic strategy relies on fostering division among workers. Racism, nationalism, sexism, all the hateful -isms are the *strategy* of capitalism. So, no, we cannot under capitalism achieve universal respect because if we did so, capitalism, a priori, would have been overcome.

Communism is, fundamentally, the politics of love. It is the embodiment of the radical idea that all people are equally worthy. Love is its strategy and its ethos.

Now get out there and love-smash.

I honestly think there has been a lack of respect for humans, animals and the environment due to capitalism. Imagine the revolt that would happen if Amazon cease to exist (immediate gratification of consumer goods)
  10:12am

No. Capitalism is inherently anti-human. Even the most socialist/liberal/nice version of it requires some people to be “have-nots”. It’s a system that was written and directed by the rich with the purpose of keeping themselves in power. It’s gotta go.

The radical hospitality ethos of some of the Northeastern Woodland cultures, yeah. There's a great argument in Graeber and Wengrow's The Dawn of Everything that a lot of the "revolutionary" ideas of Europe and then America were actually from Europeans absorbing the politics and cultural ideals of Indigenous cultures and then reflecting on the stratification and moral bankruptcy of their own cultures. So then that whatever political freedom *has* been snatched from the claws of capital and state power, the struggle that led to it is ultimately inspired by Indigenous American lifeways.

Marx was surprised at the power of nationalism as a weapon to keep workers divided -- and from nationalism, you can expand to any kind of -ism (tribalism, racism), all of which are strategies of capital. The idea that we can unify only with those who look or speak like us is one very much in the service of capital. The point of communism is radically acknowledging equality across all those lines.

Been busy working, but my take on capitalism as late is that, somewhere along the line, we collectively accepted the notion that the primary purpose of any company is to make as much money as possible for themselves rather than to make the thing they ostensibly exist to make, and it's hard to think of a single aspect of daily life which hasn't suffered as a result.

Interesting, I kind of view it as opposite. I think about that racist NBA owner, yet was paying millions to black employees... in the interest of business. Difference is not the same as division. Divisions have been created, stoked, maintained, and inflamed in order to keep workers from finding common cause against the capitalist class. To take your example, think about how every time there's a labor action in a pro sports league, the Opinion Winds are full of people talking about the "spoiled millionaires" when we should be talking about how ALL of us should have labor protection at least as strong as theirs, how the struggle for autonomy for ANY worker is the struggle for all. But the division -- the casting of athletes as an Other whose problems are not and never can be those of the "common man [sic!]" -- that is something that is carefully crafted by the ownership class.

Was driving around when Trouble posed her question of the day. Capitalism is about extracting surplus value first and foremost. As Kurnberger wrote, "[It makes] tallow out of cattle and money out of men [sic]." I’ll be out of town next week, so in terms of What Is to Be Done, I’d suggest that the only effective redress to systemic inequality is at the point of production through an invigorated labor movement. Transfer payments after the fact are intended to buy off resistance, and be very wary of techbro proposals for guaranteed minimum income as a means to rationalize their oligarchy.

As dire as the contemporary scenario is, the situation is far from hopeless. We see disaster everywhere; we also see generosity and resistance everywhere. I recently read a fine book by Saskia Sassen titled "Exclusions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy." She concluded: "The spaces of the expelled cry out for conceptual recognition. They are many, they are growing, and they are diversifying . . . They are, potentially, the new spaces for making – making local economies, new histories, and new modes of membership." This is where we have to look – to the spaces of the expelled, to those who are excluded and marginalized as their ranks continue to grow. This is where the new spaces for creation will be.
