There are Brooklyn Bagel shops and Brooklyn Pizza shops all over Joisey.
  10:34pm

This place does bagels and nothing but. No prep, no shmears, just bags and shopping carts full of bagels. We'd hit the place around 2am after punk shows on the way home.

It's west of downtown LA, roughly halfway between the west side shows and our homes at the eastern edge of LA County.

there's an illustration, a print, in an ernst gombrich book, of a renaissance or maybe medieval city, the same illustration was used to refer to several different cities in a book, i forget exactly what reasons were, but gombrich pointed it out as a conceptual detail, it seems what was inthat book is becoming 21 century reality, there will be no real differences between cities, ghomogenization, the name of the game...
  10:40pm
Dean:

The Tommy's branches scattered around the greater LA Metropolitan area were never as satisfying, and in fact the copy-cat places were better than the chain sites. But the original is pretty spectacular.
  10:42pm
Dean:

Gombrich! Thanks for the name-drop. I really enjoy reading Gombrich, Panofsky, Wind, and Warburg.

This seems true! How to resist this trend on an individual level? Create new local culture that you don’t allow on the internet? Maybe it’s not entirely a bad thing. I like that this show is one globalist glob of culture from around the world, nothing really “local” about it.
  🥁 10:45pm

it was art and illusion, i mean to read up on warburg. the idea of the archive is interesting to me
  10:49pm
Dean:

Was just speaking with a candidate for a professor position at Berkeley today about the archive.

Re: trends, I have to step back and take a breath. There is very little new about our predicament. Here's John Ashbery in 1970:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident:
That ostracism, both political and moral, has
Its place in the twentieth-century scheme of things..."

i wish i could remember more about what the author said about the illustration, but it stuck with me for thirty years, also something jean renoir said about the world moving into a neo medieval age stuck in my memory from about the same time, medieval times were not necessarly "dark" as described in henri pirenne's "medieval cities" (name drop)

My Richter story: I spent a long weekend or two scouring the greater metropolitan LA area, every Tower Records I could find, something like a dozen, seeking out Richter's famous Sofia recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition." No luck. Soon after my buddy, who ran a record store in Whittier, where we lived, called me to inform me he had a bunch of new used classical LPs for me. I *knew* this would happen as I arrived at the store. I looked through the stack of records. The Richter Mussorgsky was a the bottom. My buddy charged me fifty cents.
