Favoriting May 11, 2010: w/ live music from BIG TROUBLES
Big Troubles is the shoe-gazin' duo of Alex Craig and Ian Drennen from Ridgewood NJ. Live, they're joined by Sam Franklin (Fluffy Lumbers) and Luka Usmani, bringing thunderous drums and a wall of guitar noise to further electrify Big Troubles' whirling, reverb-drenched jangle-pop. Their debut 7'' on Blackburn Recordings is nearly sold out, but a new 7'' and a full-length LP are on the way from Olde English Spelling Bee.

jason:

live music from Ridgewood NJ's shoegaze group Big Troubles, comin up a little after the top of the hour
  9:30am
Parq:

Ridgewood NJ? What an unlikely town for a band to be from, especially one like this. I picture them in somebody's back yard on a warm day in June, with all the neighbors complaining.
  9:53am
Skirkie:

Eh, maybe they're right near the Oradell border.
  10:06am
Cecile:

I never quite got shoegaze, unless you count Swervedriver and My Bloody Valentine as shoegaze. Which I kind of don't.
  10:09am
kevin shields:

MBV is the epitome of shoegaze
  10:11am
Cecile:

Hunh. I just thought they were a good proto-drone band. I stand corrected. I like no shoegaze except for MBV and Swervedriver, then.
  10:17am
jason:

is JAMC shoegaze?
  10:22am
Cecile:

I dunno. I liked em for their first few singles, and the song "hole" and that was it.
  10:33am
dc pat:

what ever shoegaze is, I don't count MBV in that group. They're WAY to noisy for most shoegazers.
  10:38am
jason:

hope everyone's listening at high volume!
  10:41am
jen v.:

love this so much
  10:42am
Skirkie:

The highest that is socially acceptable for a cubicle. Maybe a bit more.
  10:42am
Tom:

Has a first album Teenage Fanclub vibe. Good stuff.
  10:42am
Chris from DC:

Not as loud as I would like, but these guys are great.
  10:45am
Parq:

High as I dare at work. These guys are killer!
  10:47am
dc pat:

remember Archers of Loaf?
  10:47am
Cecile:

this sounds more like the Huskers than shoegaze.
  10:49am
purmain:

huskers, cecile?
  10:49am
Carmichael:

Good mornin' every body. They're a little sho-gazy, dreamy, strummy ....
  10:50am
Cecile:

Husker Du?
  10:51am
Carmichael:

Bob Mould.
  10:55am
Skirkie:

I can't believe there are still angelfire pages.
  10:57am
kurt russel:

big troubles in little china
  11:01am
dc pat:

big troubles is a pretty solid name too. How hasn't that been used before?
  11:04am
Skirkie:

There's a Big Trouble in Brazil. But they don't seem similar.
  11:06am
Cecile:

If a Chicago doom-metal band, and a Billy Sheehan hair band joined forces, they'd be Mr. Big Trouble.
  11:10am
Carmichael:

Boy, I love anything Martin Newell does. What album is this from, Jason?
  11:13am
jason:

hey Carmichael, found it on their Golden Cleaners
  11:15am
Cecile:

YES. Tobin Sprout. The fate of the world is safe in these young peoples' hands.
  11:15am
Carmichael:

Thanks, I'll go get it!
  11:16am
dom:

Ahh--------needed some of that Carnival air....
  11:17am
Cecile:

HAH! I called it!
  11:18am
dc pat:

ah there's Bob.
  11:18am
dc pat:

you should play Bob w/ No Age backing him up. That shit is rippin.
  11:19am
Carmichael:

Whoa. That IS him! Criminy, I can't keep up with these kids and their bands, playing the crunchy music.
  11:20am
dc pat:

anybody else going to see the Buzzcocks tonight in DC? ...speakin of non-kids...
  11:22am
Parq:

The deejay set is every bit as good as the performance set was.
  11:23am
Cecile:

this is all the kind of stuff I was listening to in the 90s when I was hating most rock

Am I wrong for liking the Breeders more than the Pixies?
  11:25am
Skirkie:

♥ Kim Deal
  11:25am
dc pat:

I dunno Cecile...first 2 or 3 Pixies albums are priceless in my book.
  11:26am
Cecile:

I've tried. So hard. They just don't hit me.
Although I've really liked some of Frank Black's solo stuff!
  11:27am
Carmichael:

Granted I'm on the other side of the land mass and also nowhere near trendy LA, I can't see what the hollerin's about with the Pixies. They're good and all, but it seems lots of people view them as deities.
  11:28am
dc pat:

I think what did it for me was actually seeing them in 89 or so. Black Francis was just nuts, face red, veins bulging. They were tiny on Love and Rockets stage but made a way bigger sound.
  11:29am
Cecile:

yes, half of my family does. And we're smack dab in the midwest.
  11:29am
dc pat:

sorry Carm, ya gotta be Amerkican to like the Pixies...
  11:30am
BSI:

What it is!
  11:33am
Parq:

Carm, I'm completely from the US, and I agree with you. Seen 'em, have what's supposed to be their best album, just can't find anything to get worked up about. But that DJ set was a knockout.
  11:35am
Carmichael:

That explains everything, DC Pat ... :-)
  11:36am
dc pat:

dang! Guess I'm all alone here. Oh well.
  11:38am
dc pat:

love Arrington. You're definitely going to have a good time when ever he's playing. And you'll probably only pay 5 bucks.
  11:39am
BSI:

holy crap. this is wonderful. Arrington thing. Need more.
  11:48am
Cecile:

okay, this Black Bug song should be called "Shakin' Street"
  11:49am
Cecile:

Or pink noise or whoever. Wow. I couldn't tell it was Cheap Trick.
  11:51am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Just saw Sightings in a decrepit warehouse during a lightning/hailstorm on Friday...
