[10:00 AM] Paul Boutin: "The Age of Music Piracy Is Officially Over"

Will 2010 go down as the year people quit downloading music illegally? Guest Paul Boutin writes about social networks and digital media for the New York Times, reviews books for the Wall Street Journal, and his latest Wired Magazine essay declared that "The age of stealing music via the Internet is officially over". Boutin describes how technological innovations have made the prospect of paying for digital music way more appealing than it was in Napster's heyday. But even as the hand of law came down this year against popular filesharing websites like Limewire and the Pirate Bay, Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge made quite the opposite declaration: "File sharing is increasing every day and the only thing this means is that more and more people will try to hide what they are doing on the internet." We'll discuss where things stand with music piracy as 2010 comes to a close.

Cthulhu be praised! It's the Sigal Signal!
  9:11am
marc:

Can someone me who the picture on the WFMU homepage is? its funny, and i dont recognize them.
  9:16am
glenn:

i think it might be the average white band, but i'm nowhere near certain.
  9:16am
jason:

mornin' BSI!

marc i'm not sure who they are!
  9:25am
Cecile:

the Bonemen were from Minneapolis, I think. People used to get grumpy at them here because they were more popular in Europe than the Replacemements for a while.
  9:25am
marc:

i was thinkin the bay city rollers. they have that look. but thats a guess too... thank you.
  9:26am
Cecile:

Nope, they were from Chicago. But thery were popular here.
  9:27am
glenn:

i would have said the rollers too, except for those virgin t-shirts.
  9:28am
Cecile:

glenn, they are so not the Average White Band. They were all beardy and bedraggled. Fun fact, Cher saved one of their lives when they OD'd on drugs.
  9:29am
jason:

menudo?
  9:31am
glenn:

oh, that cher. gregg allman, the a.w.b. how come coolness never rubbed off on her?
  9:32am
glenn:

hey cecile, i discovered the miinesota beatles project yesterday. i like it.
  9:33am
glenn:

  9:35am
glenn:

i bow to your superior wisdom.
  9:36am
jason:

groeten uit Jersey City, het is koud als fuck
  9:37am
Cecile:

She's just really good at being herself. Love her, hate her, it doesn't matter. She's just going to go on being Cher. It's like talking trash to a mountain. It's going to go on even though you are mad at it that it's too tall or people fall off it.
  9:37am
eliab:

grandissimo J!!!
  9:39am
yayson:

wow this is exactly what my brain feels like this glorious morn
  9:39am
jason:

that is good yayson!

...or is it bad?
  9:43am
zombie:

Stop talking about brains. I'm on a diet!!
  9:44am
jason:

are you expressway yo-yo dieting?
  9:46am
JoshRVA:

Here comes the snow again
  9:47am
zombie:

The zombie christmas party was last night. Waaaaaaay too many hors d'oevres. And the mess. The cleaning staff was useless, what with not having any brains and all that.
  9:48am
jason:

oh no i left my thumb drive at home!
  9:49am
Cecile:

I killed a bunch of your kin with some peashooters and cabbagepults last night. (Plants vs. Zombies) I'm not a fan of your kind. Please understand, it's hard enough keeping my lawn in order, but you guys keep walking through it trying to invade my house! That is not neighborly!
  9:51am
dc pat:

just so we're all on the same page, zombis are real.
  9:51am
dc pat:

and re Cher: You may be right Cecile but she's still worthless, just like PA mountains compared to NM mountains.
  9:52am
BSI:

we don't need no stinking thumb drives!
  9:53am
stickman:

i'll tell you where you can put that thumb drive....
  9:53am
zombie:

i'm sorry. it's just, i get these urges, you know.
  9:56am
Cecile:

That's fine, zomb. Just stay the hell out of my yard. Try across the street.

Cecile:

Dead Corporate Eyes:

is all this zombie talk because Night of the Living Dead was on TMC last night?
  10:01am
zombie:

maybe get rid of the grass and plant some nice echinaceas and sea holly and stuff.
  10:01am
jaw:

I hope all the pirates are drunk as hell
  10:04am
dc pat:

DCE: I watched it on TMC right before Halloween. Amazing classic....except zombis are real.
  10:04am
Cecile:

Zombie's around pretty much.
And I didn't know Living Dead was on TV last night. I just play Plants vs Zombies a thousand house a day.
  10:05am
Cecile:

zombis are real. Zombies, not so much.
  10:06am
BSI:

I was always partial to NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES (aka Hell of the Living Dead) - not just because it lifts the Dawn soundtrack by Goblin, but it's the first & only instance (that i can think of) of a film dealing with the issue of animal zombies (if it's radiation killing people & re-animating 'em, why not that rat you're picking up?

AIEEEE! The rat! aaaarrrgggggh;kafjdlsfkdjf,,,bbbmmm
  10:06am
zombie:

there's butter on my head!
  10:08am
dc pat:

radiation, schmadiation...it's PUFFER FISH, PEOPLE!!!
  10:08am
glenn:

many years ago, i worked at colorization, aka, the evil factory. we colorized night of the living dead, so i've probably seen it a hundred times.
  10:08am
dc pat:

..and datura
  10:11am
Cecile:

I thnk we should pay for music whenever possible. But if something's out of print, there's no way to get it.
  10:14am
glenn:

case in point - cowboy's are frequently, secretly by ned sublette. i can't find that to save my life.
  10:15am
Cecile:

ned sublette?
I have a record of ned sublette cowboy songs from '82. is that what you're thinking of?.
  10:19am
glenn:

i have that one too, it's a great record. no, this is a different record. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hajTNlooZKE
  10:20am
jaw:

correct, keep the question mark.
  10:21am
Cecile:

Yes, but there is some nuance to that.
People used to tape or copy to "try before they buy" without outlaying a lot of money.

There used to be the argument in the 80s that "home taping is killing music", when the truth was somewhat different - home tapers bought more music than non home tapers.
  10:25am
Cecile:

There are too many labels that have completely screwed people over. That can't be underestimated or glossed over. It's different than a dry cleaner.
  10:27am
glenn:

i just found ned's version on youtube too.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhyWmqjiEtw
  10:28am
glenn:

the record industry (major label version) is the epitome of douchery.
  10:30am
Cecile:

Talk to George Clinton. Talk to the older RnB artists that have to tour 200 days a year to make it.
  10:32am
jaw:

Nice job Jason. The pirates are merciful today.
I don't know why.
  10:38am
jojo:

i used napster back a decade ago, but i recently did some torrenting and it is insane how fast it is with modern bandwidth, some 1G box set in like 10 minutes...i can't imagine that the ability to download things (apps, movies, sons) is going anywhere at this bit rate.
  10:42am
glenn:

i like to pay for music too. i don't work for nothing, why should musicians?
  10:42am
jason:

haha "at this bit rate"...well put jojo
thanks for takin' a trip into the grey area with me this morning, if you want more there is a podcast: http://wfmu.org/playlists/ga
  10:43am
Cecile:

I think your interviewee had good points, but it's pretty oversimplified. I support artists, and record companies if they are square with their artists. But what it boils down to is that a self-released album selling 50,000 still makes more money for the artist than a platinum-selling I know artists are naive about how fast and when the money will come in, but the record business has been cynically exploiting that for years. I know for a fact that if they pulled this crap in the movie or book business, people would be up in arms ( and there are plenty of greedy manager/agent stories out there). But music, everyone seems to think that musicians should be happy with scraps.
  10:43am
Cecile:

Rant over. I pay for music, but I am careful about where my money goes.
  10:45am
glenn:

and really, why do cds cost so much, when the production costs are so small and the artist gets so little of that money?
  10:48am
Cecile:

I KNOW, glenn! I KNOW!!!!!!!!
  10:49am
jason:

good question glenn, people ask the same thing about downloads since there is no production cost there really. and as paul pointed out in the interview, the artist doesn't typically see a very large percentage of the royalties from digital music sales (unless they are independent...even so much of that dollar goes to Apple/Amazong etc). But artists might receive more if that Eminem case Paul was telling about comes thru
  10:52am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

best way to support musicians is to go see them live, buy their merch there, tell them you love them.
  10:53am
Cecile:

Absolutely, DEC. I try to buy from the artist's website as much as possible, too.
  10:54am
glenn:

crazy question time..... is there an, i don't know what to call it, let's say artist run download site? i guess a collective type thing more than just an individual artist or label site.
  10:56am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

soundcloud?
  10:57am
Cecile:

beatport has streaming and downloads for dance music djs and producers. You pay for dls.

Soundcloud is like that for dance and other artists. You can stream or pay.
  10:57am
jason:

glenn you mean artist-run mp3 vendors? artists can set up their own.

freemusicarchive.org is 100% free music that artists want to share, but there are also usually easy ways to tip the artist and/or purchase their music/mersh
  11:01am
Chris from DC:

Isn't Bandcamp set up pretty much that way?
  11:01am
glenn:

no, not really. what i mean is essentially socialist itunes. the artists control everything.
  11:03am
Chris from DC:

Ah, interesting.
  11:11am
noah:

I dunno, that kinda sounds like Bandcamp from what I know about it! They take a 15% cut, service is free and the site has no ads IIRC.
  11:13am
jojo:

funny, my old napster hard drive (a decade ago) was called gray area...after the coffee shop but I liked the connotation
  11:17am
Cecile:

I was reading Beware of the Blog. Is Tony Coulter really subbing over the holidays?
  11:47am
dc pat:

I was just about to say "This sounds like Ginsberg."
