Listener comments!

  12:01pm
Alf from Upstate:

GoManda!
  12:01pm
jk:

welcome back to my computer speakers!
  12:03pm
listener james from westwood:

good wednesday to all!
  12:03pm
Amanda:

Hi everyone!!!
  12:05pm
Lizardner Dave:

Sorry I'm late. Ken ran a little long. Hey, the playlist on the front page links to a Pat Duncan archive.
  12:05pm
Van in Dallas:

Greetings Amanda and listeners
  12:06pm
Amanda:

Hi LD! Thanks for noticing that, as I also did. Doug, can you help?

Hi, Van!
  12:06pm
Amanda:

(Let the record show that I am kind of flattered to be linked to a Pat Duncan archive)
  12:07pm
listener james from westwood:

If I'm gonna be misrouted anywhere, that's a fine place to end up.
  12:08pm
Doug Schulkind:

Weird glitch with the auto-news update on the homepage. I'm trying to figger it out.
  12:10pm
annie:

wow, i made it!!
  12:10pm
Lizardner Dave:

Looks fixed now.
  12:10pm
Amanda:

Hey, Annie! (again!)
  12:11pm
Doug Schulkind:

"Weird glitch" is a euphemism for "I fegged up." Guess I left vacation a wee bit early.
  12:13pm
Skirkie:

So who's Pat Duncan anyhow?
  12:14pm
listener james from westwood:

oooh, young ones!
  12:14pm
G:

Pat did a punk show for 25 years or more (?) here, but hasn't been on the schedule in a couple of years. Check the archives.
  12:17pm
Doug Schulkind:

Years ago, Station Manager Ken asked all DJs to write a program description for the next issue of LCD (the station's old print version of a program guide). Most DJs hated doing this and many others just never provided one. So I, as one of FMU's three paid staff at the time, wrote a number of them.

For Pat I wrote: "He's been playing punk on the radio since before you were born" (or somesuch)
  12:23pm
Ike:

Oh wow Doug, I didn't know you wrote that classic schedule blurb. One really really old LCD had examples of bands commonly played by each DJ, which seemed more useful to me than the often-vague blurbs.

Ouch, "Tainted Love" is already soooo burned into my brain's retinas, so to speak....
  12:23pm
Gene:

lissinin!
  12:24pm
G:

Nice hipster whine there, Ike!
  12:26pm
Van in Dallas:

So the Soft Cell was the dead wood left over from last week then? ;)
  12:27pm
Fake Name:

WAAAAAHHHHHHH, I'M SCARED!!!!!
  12:29pm
Amanda:

Hi Gene, Ike, and G (and some that I'm sure I forgot)! Fake Name, don't worry -- we are all scared.
  12:29pm
Fake Name:

lolz
  12:30pm
Fiveash:

You caught me passive-aggressively not commenting! I apologize. I'm-a-scared too!
  12:31pm
Amanda:

Playlist froze for a minute there! Sorry the Swinging Laurels weren't credited until now.
  12:32pm
Van in Dallas:

Must be glitch week :)
  12:33pm
Alf from Upstate:

At least SOMETHING is freezing. Sheesh.
  12:33pm
Amanda:

Don'na be scared! We all-a gonna listen to the nice records
  12:35pm
Amanda:

Alf -- they say it's going to thunderstorm down here today. I hope it does... although this dog I am caring for will need to take a Xanax. Seriously.
  12:35pm
Van in Dallas:

@Alf Amen to that. High 100's all week here in Dallas. We're at 32 consecutive 100+ degree days now.
  12:36pm
Alf from Upstate:

@Van in Dallas
I guess your governor isn't praying hard enough.
  12:38pm
Van in Dallas:

Oh sure he is...no rain since forever but we're up to a mighty 10% chance today! ;)
  12:40pm
Gov. Perry:

I was too busy praying at NASCAR events.
  12:47pm

  12:55pm
Doug Schulkind:

One hundred lines of that cocaine after class?! You know I'm a wuss and can only do 90.
  12:55pm
Brian in UK:

Took them SIX days to find it. Impressive.
  12:57pm
Brian in UK:

  1:03pm
annie:

michael nesmith.. sweet..
  1:04pm
Amanda:

Annie -- Mike was always my favorite.
  1:06pm
annie:

i only began to appreciate his beauty just about ten years ago.. then i pored over all the old monkees vids..
  1:06pm
annie:

it all started with "propinquity"
  1:10pm
Van in Dallas:

Back after a nice walk...Monkees huh? Gosh I used to watch their TV show every Saturday Back In The Day. They were just swell :)
  1:16pm
Brian in UK:

Propinquity that means kinship I believe. Appropriate for this station.

Van using words like swell is wonderful. Peter was a bit of a sap.
  1:16pm
Lizardner Dave:

Everybody knows it's windy, though.
  1:16pm
jk:

the rest of the show is looking pretty sunny
  1:16pm
Amanda:

Van, I did too! In reruns by then, but I was glued to it and Gidget each weekend.
  1:16pm
Van in Dallas:

Wow. Amanda. The playlist has turned...dare I say it...brilliant.
  1:17pm
Brian in UK:

LD Word Association.
  1:18pm
Fiveash:

Lizardner Dave: Everyone knows it's Wednesday.
  1:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

We miss you Bobby Hebb. (Died one year ago today.)
  1:21pm
Van in Dallas:

Looks like 1967 for John Davidson - Sunny
  1:25pm
Fiveash:

That was John Davidson with an "extraordinary rendition" of Sunny.
  1:30pm
efd:

Finally back at my desk after various meetings - Hi Amanda, and anyone else I know who's here!
  1:32pm
Van in Dallas:

Hi efd. Have you ever seen the Monkees? :)
  1:33pm
efd:

Van, only on the television.
  1:33pm
Amanda:

Hi efd!
  1:34pm
Doug Schulkind:

I love that Nesmith-produced band Penny Arkade. Such killer pop.
  1:35pm
Van in Dallas:

That's what I meant...the TV show :) Actually, I have no idea if they ever toured or not. Probably so.
  1:36pm
Amanda:

I saw Mickey Dolenz on Broadway in a production of "Aida"
  1:37pm
Lizardner Dave:

I just had the strange urge to pledge to Ken's show....
  1:38pm
Amanda:

I love this song, in or out of marathon time.
  1:40pm
Fiveash:

Hi Evan! I was in high school when the Nesmith-less Monkees had their "comeback". My friend Jethro spent one Summer in Los Angeles as an gofer for his uncle who was a music video director, and one of the video shoots he was there for was the Monkees' comeback hit... he reported that Mickey and Davy were coked-up jerks who had overly touchy-feely relationships with their trampy teenage daughters, and that Peter was super nice and that he and Peter watched Eraserhead together. This would have been maybe 1987? More recently, Mickey Dolenz ate lunch at the Great Jones a couple of years ago. He had Jambalaya AND French Fries. Carbo loading for a marathon maybe?
  1:40pm
Van in Dallas:

Well hopefully this show is not a marathon much as I love and enjoy it...but I'm getting HUNGRY and am waiting til this is over. :)
  1:42pm
Skirkie:

Resist it she says. That made my day.
  1:43pm
efd:

Amanda, you pretty much just described my relationship with "Sleeping With The Enemy" by Rodger Hodgson.
  1:44pm
efd:

Hi Matt! Your third-hand accounts of the Monkees are unsurprisingly unsurprising.
  1:45pm
Brian in UK:

I saw Mike Nesmith at the Roundhouse early '74, playing Zigzag fanzines 5th anniversary gig. He was rather tired & emotional, playing with Red Rhodes. He introduced the song Joanne 'This is a song about a cow'. How do I remember that. John Stewart was also on the bill, he was on top form.
  1:52pm
gumby:

ANY TROUBLE!!!!!!! You just made my whole day!
  1:52pm
Brian in UK:

Amanda, can you get the soundbite of the Fabs doing the 'Oh they do don't they though' amongst themselves.. It's either Hard Days Rut or Help.
  1:53pm
Doug Schulkind:

Tony Coulter will actually have a fill-in in two week's time. Archie Patterson, the man behind the legendary 'zine/mail order entity called Eurock, will be filling in for Tony. (Tony interviewed Archie in Beware of the Blog here: http://tinyurl.com/ykc9n6r)

Tune in on Tuesday, August 16 from Noon to 3pm (ET). Right here on Give the Drummer Radio.
  1:54pm
Amanda:

Glad to oblige, gumby!
  1:54pm
Brian in UK:

gumby Clive Gregson is still playing, living in Nashville I believe. In Nancy Griffiths' band. Saw them at WOMAD a few years ago.
  1:56pm

  1:59pm

Thanks, all, for your support and fellow-feeling. See you next week!
  1:59pm
