Listener comments!

  12:16am
The Count of Al Dente:

Ya know, some polka wouldn't be so bad. Or maybe Nash the Slash.
  12:17am
Mike Sin:

The genre of music that is usually very unpopular on WFMU is usually... very popular.
  12:18am
Joe McG:

I've played Nash the Slash! AND polka! Ahead of the curve.
  12:19am
tony:

Sounds good to me. How bout some Artie Shaw/Gramercy 5?
  12:20am
Joe McG:

Hey, Mike! Hey, Tony! Yeah, I may go for some Artie...lemme see...
  12:21am
12539:

I think Loutallica may be what I've heard the most complaints about lately on the comments board.
  12:22am
The Count of Al Dente:

Or over-lapping Ethel Merman with ESG?
  12:23am
cheri:

  12:26am
Itchy:

This music makes me feel so alienated ... and full of MOXIE!
  12:27am
Joe McG:

Hey, Cheri! Have a great holiday! Hey, Itchy...you are just full of vim!
  12:27am
The Count of Al Dente:

It makes me feel like I just chugged five bottles of Manhattan Special.
  12:28am
T-Zero:

Evening, JoeMcG. You have it swingin' this monring....
  12:29am
bryce:

joe, i'm in the middle of a decadent potluck, and you have 7 people almost flinging soup around the room
  12:30am
Joe McG:

Hey, T-Zero...yeah, gettin' things off to a swingin' start tonight. The Death Jams come later. BRYCE!
  12:32am
bryce:

seriously, people are bouncing, holding soup bowls. it's DEPRAVED
  12:33am
Bridget:

I LOVE this music. So perfect! Are you breaking 78's as you play 'em?
  12:33am
12539:

Lester!
  12:34am
Joe McG:

SMASH! CRASH! POP!
  12:36am
The Count of Al Dente:

Time for Gene Krupa!!
  12:37am
Joe McG:

But, Count, we started with Gene!
  12:38am
Bridget:

Drum Boogie!
  12:38am
The Count of Al Dente:

OOps. Well then, kenny Davern. WTH, I can't go to sleep now.
  12:40am
The Count of Al Dente:

It's too bad Gene Palma isn't on disc.
  12:44am
The Count of Al Dente:

Hmmm, every tub of bootleg?
  12:46am
12539:

"Every tub has to sit on its own bottom."
  12:47am
Julie:

wow look at all the Big Band music
  12:48am
The Count of Al Dente:

I think my blood pressure is settling down now.
  12:56am
Danne D:

I thought the Big Band set was outstanding, Joe. Next time it'd be great to hear a little Buddy Rich :)

Loving this Pipeline set too :)
  12:58am
Joe McG:

Hey, Danne D--thanks, man! Didn't suspect all these BB fans out there...maybe disco surf music is THE least popular!
  12:58am
tony:

Is there a middle ground - a rousing, toe tappin' big band version of Pipeline?
  12:58am
Danne D:

*wonders if Joe has anymore songs in the pipeline*
  12:59am
The Count of Al Dente:

The aforementioned guests at the dinner party should really be tossing their food now.
  12:59am
Danne D:

Heh, I thought you were going to do a tribute to Vance the Puppet and have a prog rock set :) There's a lot of great Big Band stuff - and heck, I'm old enough that I heard more than a few episodes of William B Williams' Make-Believe Ballroom on the way to the nursing home to see Nana
  1:04am
Joe McG:

Nanas always have the best taste in music.
  1:05am
Danne D:

lol (well it was actually Little Grandpa that chose the station - though I'm sure Nana would approve) :)
  1:06am
Danne D:

riding in the back of his plymouth duster with my mom in the front
  1:08am
The Count of Al Dente:

Ya know, it's kind of funny. I dig love in the morning too.
  1:09am
Joe McG:

@Count: What about in the evening?
  1:11am
Joe McG:

Oh, by the way, just so you know I care, I spared you versions of "Pipeline" by Bad Manners and Pat Metheny.
  1:11am
Julie:

awww bad manners??
  1:14am
Joe McG:

@Julie: Is it bad manners to say "aww" about Bad Manners? :)
  1:17am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Joe!
A good crowd here, hope I'm not late to the party!
  1:18am
Julie:

@Joe Yes.
  1:18am
Matt from Springfield:

The Big Band sounds like a great set! So-and-so, with his orchestra...how about next week, you play those bandleaders WITHOUT their orchestras! :)
  1:18am
Joe McG:

@Matt: Well, I heard there was soup at this party, but I don't have any.
  1:20am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Perhaps we can get the soup off the people who were flinging it around, put it back in bowls, and re-fling it!

T.N.K. = Tomorrow Never Knows!!! AWESOME prog/Roxy style cover!!
  1:20am
Julie:

oooh I like this
  1:21am
Julie:

I don't know that I want to eat Bryce-style soup
  1:22am
Joe McG:

@Julie: I'll tell him to leave out the brains.
  1:22am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Re-cycled, re-flung Bryce soup is approved by the FDA for re-flinging, but not for slurping. Exercise extreme caution!
  1:26am
Matt from Springfield:

Does anyone remember an "All In The Family" episode where they're playing the "bandleader game"? One person comes up with two letters, like GM, and the person guessing has to figure out which Big Band(s) that could be (Glenn Miller). Is there anyone alive now with enough knowledge of Big Bands to play that game...
  1:26am
Bridget:

Smells like soup!
  1:27am
Julie:

@Bridget I am sure you all smell like soup.
@Joe now a big band version of tomorrow never knows, that would be something.
  1:29am
Matt from Springfield:

A comforting synth-rock track here!
(If SkyNet took over to THIS tune, I may resist less..)
  1:35am
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, The Crystal Junkyard!
Spin those platters, Joe!!
  1:37am
Joe McG:

@Matt: Preferably at the right speeds!
  1:38am
Matt from Springfield:

LOL, I caught your first start--but you caught that error very quick this time!
  1:41am
Matt from Springfield:

There's a Christmas CD I heard that's VERY good--"Jolly Old Soul", it has old soul artists like Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Donny Hathaway, Solomon Burke and others Xmas songs. All upbeat, great songs!
  1:42am
Matt from Springfield:

OH HELL YEAHS!!!! Friend and Lover!!!! I mean a F&L song other than their hit, "Reach Out Of The Darkness"!!
  1:42am
Joe McG:

@Matt: I'll be hitting up some of those folks on my Xmas show.
  1:45am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Glad you will be, great stuff lasts through the ages!
Mud! FMU must be the only station this side of the Pond that still plays them!

BTW, which one was the "Friend", and which was the "Lover"?....
  1:47am
david:

Hi Joe, MFS et al. I loved that Friend and Lover. Ultra rare.
  1:48am
Joe McG:

Hey, David! Glad you dug it. Jim Post was the friend, I always thought, but maybe he was the lover? Poll!
  1:50am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi david!
@Joe: Who was the friend and who was the lover? The husband or wife? Depends who you ask! ;)
  1:51am
Scott W:

hi joe! dinner party's gone violent, people are bleeding. bring us back - more big band you bitch!!
  1:52am
Joe McG:

@Matt: I'm not going there. I'm sure they are not lovers anymore. Maybe friends.
  1:53am
Joe McG:

@Scott W: Wow, and I was getting all serious! Hey, Scott!
  1:55am
Scott W:

we're getting serious too Joe - cap guns, broken glasses. thank goodness for the everlys
  1:56am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, the Everly's song's character needs to do something about being a pushover--he's gone from being Cathy's Clown, to Nancy's Minuet!!
  1:56am
Joe McG:

@Scott: I'll play some scary songs about God soon, will calm y'all down.
  2:01am
?:

Wow Purple Rain is unmistakable.
  2:02am
Joe McG:

From Purple Haze-ish to Purple Rain-ish.
  2:02am
Matt from Springfield:

I just looked it up--Larry Norman!! If you're playing songs about God, I strongly suggest him! He's the only Christian Rocker I can scream my head off for!
  2:07am
Scott W:

kevin ayers!!!
  2:16am
Sue:

Hey Joe! Happy Sunday :)
  2:17am
Joe McG:

Hey, Sue! What's up...besides YOU, I mean?
  2:19am
Sue:

Not much, just chillin... glad to catch your show. Hey, did you catch sight of the full moon tonight?
  2:20am
dino:

Does anyone else find it kinda hard to say farewell to Dobie?
  2:22am
Joe McG:

@Sue: I did! Like a headlight!
  2:22am
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Perfect Sunday morning music !
  2:22am
Sue:

I missed the Everly Brothers on Single File! Argh
  2:24am
Joe McG:

Hey, Yair! The Empire State Building was all red tonight. It was either for the holidays or a tribute to Blumin's red past.
  2:26am
Joe McG:

@dino: I'm sorry the Dobie set is so short...I meant to do something more extensive but ran out of time tonight...
  2:30am
dino:

Thanks for the nice set, McG. The Stone's Drift Away was a great choice too, I always thought it was an underappreciated track of theirs.
  2:31am
Brian in UK:

Hello Joe & folks. Sad 'bout Dobie and Howard Tate last week.
  2:32am
Joe McG:

I'm going to play some Howard next week, Brian.
  2:32am
dino:

And Hubert Sumlin.
  2:34am
Brian in UK:

The list goes on, Dino.
  2:41am
Brian in UK:

Did'ya see the lunar eclipse? Got it weak over here. Sounds like Scott W got downwind of something!
  2:42am
Joe McG:

@Brian: Full moon must be in full effect.
  2:45am
T-Zero:

Too cloudy here, Brian
  2:49am
Tubby:

Me too.
  2:57am
Danne D:

Great show Joe :)
Good night kids :)
  2:59am
Brian in UK:
