Favoriting January 26, 2012: FreeLoading author Chris Ruen's "Elegy for the Piracy Wars"

While the internet high-fived itself over last week's successful SOPA/PIPA blackout, Chris Ruen protested against the protest. In An Elegy for the Piracy Wars, the Slate Magazine, NY Times and NY Press contributor lamented how sensationalism trumped informed discussion because these proposed laws might not have inherently evil intentions. So is the author of the forthcoming book FreeLoading in favor of American Censorship? Tune in at 11am to find out as we pour one out for Megaupload!

I think when artists get paid, they don't have to take jobs other places. Then they can make more art.

I try to pay whenever possible because I have done free-lance writing and art, and i know what goes into it. I commission small works from artists when I can.

I think there should be freedom, but too many people cop out of honoring the work of artists.

Word Joe, check out the Joe Preston DJ set

well DC Pat, since you asked, we take a survey of what the public listenership wants to hear, and then we play the opposite, which is apparently waht only you want to hear
  10:21am
glenn:

so.....sort of like the republicans, then?
  10:22am
Cecile:

nice, Jason. Another reason to check it out.

No, glenn, they just BS a lot.
  10:26am
glenn:

well, here in the great white north, every statistic shows that crime rates are falling, and have been for years, but our current right wing regime says " we don't listen to evidence, we listen to what our voters want". that's a direct quote. this is the justification for new laws and many megaprisons being built.
  10:27am
joe:

I love this DJ Eslam Elamier track
  10:30am
Cecile:

I think politticians here often either lie about what voters really want or convince them they want something else.
  10:32am
dc pat:

thanks for the info Jason.

A politician's job, like a salesperson's, is to tell you what you want.
  10:33am
joe:

US politics is run the same way as the marketing department at Mcdonalds or any other high profile "pop" retail establishment.
  10:34am
Joe Isuzu:

I take offense to your remark, dc pat. By the way, that color looks really good on you!
  10:35am
Cecile:

yup

Most Americans are either in favor of or don't give a rat's ass about gay marriage/partnership. Polls have shown this over and over again. But it still seems to be a hot button issue. Most Americans don't mind higher taxes - IF they are being spent wisely. but it keeps getting turned around and around.
  10:35am
glenn:

politics is about who gets the money, and that's all. right wingers think corporations and rich folks should get it. liberals more or less think the same way. socialists, like me, think that the working folk should get most of it, since we create most of it.
  10:38am
PB:

Jason, apologies because you have probably been asked this a number of times but what is the title of the Faust track you speak over? It's great. I am just getting into Krautrock (yeah, about 40 years late) and am trying to learn as much as I can.
  10:41am
joe:

I dont' belive that 90% of all politicians have any other motive but carrer advancement any more or less then your average CEO and there is no social intrest what so ever.
  10:42am
PB:

@joe, I couldn"t agree more but might put the percentage even higher.
  10:42am

socialists are just as corrupt as anyone else--and I consider myself a socialist. give anybody power and they will fuck us.

Yer right on Cecile, as usual.

Except SOPA would break the internet. Fucking with DNS is a bad, bad idea. And forcing companies to censor anything anyone says or does on their website IN ADVANCE of publishing would break the internet. These are real consequences of SOPA.
  11:12am
some other guy:

I'm confused. These are all reasonable points about how unfair piracy can be, but I don't hear anything addressing the huge problems with SOPA that have nothing to do with piracy.
  11:12am
earwax:

Why SOPA is bad: https://www.eff.org/sites/default/files/One-Page-SOPA_0.pd
  11:13am
JT:

Sorry, the idea that one must support Anonymous if one knows SOPA is bullshit is a false choice. Smear someone else with Hobson's choices, troll.

Digital determinism is silly, but being against it by anthropomorphizing "the Internet" is dumb.
  11:14am
joe:

I understand what Jason is saying here, but I think there is a third group that gets swept up in the battle and lose because there is a sweeping attack that could be made.
  11:15am
joe:

I'm sorry I meant to say Chris not Jason
  11:15am
topofthepops:

digital determinism? exploiting the artists? cruel world...
  11:15am
WinstonSmith:

Who is this apologist for the corporate state? He mentions the good of "open dialog" vs direct action. Where in this society do the people have access to direct dialog with power? The political apparatus of the state has been completely purchased by the corporate tyranny. Blocking access to any dialog or meaningful criticism of their abuse has been a first priority. Direct action is our only option and it thankfully, works.
  11:16am
Cecile:

I thnik the record and movie companies are theorectically in the right on some points. However, they have muddied the water by years of ripping off artists.
  11:16am
bruceleh:

@WinstonSmith
You are doubleplusgood duckspeaker!
  11:18am
joe:

The theory here is that the majority is criminal so we have to set the system to account for that as opposed to the other way around.
  11:20am
earwax:

The US constitution seems to make a point that copyright is not just to promote corporate profits but to promote social utility by promoting useful arts and sciences. Copyright is a legal issue not a moral one. Current copyright laws are one sided and support corporate middlemen over artists and society in general.
  11:20am
andymorphic:

death panel was all lies....censorship is a potential reality
  11:21am
WinstonSmith:

@Joe Correct SOPA would have created a situation where all of us would be accused in advance and then it would be up to us to prove our innocence.
  11:21am
JT:

What does the guest think of the fact that the big content companies are themselves persistent copyright criminals? Even the politicians supporting SOPA have turned out to be illegally using copyrighted photos on their own websites, several times.

When SOPA hits the real world, a company with lawyers on staff or retainer have more rights than the rest of us. They get a call to their lawyer. The rest of us get shut down with no recourse. Even something the size of WFMU could get blacked out with no due process.
  11:22am
Nathan:

He sounds a bit contrarian to me simply for the sake of being contrarian. The MPAA and RIAA and the Chamber of Commerce did essentially write this bill. It was a poor bill, with very wide ranging wording that removed some traditionally legal traditions such as presuming innocence until proven guilty under a court of law. The Megaupload shutdown only proves that the gov't has all the tools necessary to do what it needs to do without creating more laws which could stifle a very young and rapidly growing technology. We don't need further legislation to prop up legacy industries that can't or won't adapt, we need innovation.
  11:22am
Dom Chico:

The war on piracy will be one the same moment the war on drugs is won. never gonna happen, just something we all have to accept
  11:22am

Chris' voice is so warm and beautiful sounding.
  11:24am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the conversation with Chris Ruen. It's been very interesting.
  11:24am
andymorphic:

exactly jason
  11:25am
Cecile:

Nathan, I believe strrongly in artist rights. However, as you said, Having the RIAA and MPAA sponsor this bill is like wolves setting up a preserve for rare mountain goats. The impulse is good, but you know the goats are not really going to benefit from it...
  11:29am
WinstonSmith:

@Dom: That is an excellent point. The most ominous aspect when considering the affects on our society created by the "war on drugs" is just how much of our freedom and how many of our rights have been compromised over the last 30 or so years under the excuse of the drug war. SOPA has the potential to open up a whole new chapter of the abuse of our rights in the largely untamed digital realm just as the war on drugs has been used to abuse us in the physical realm. Piracy of copyrighted material is simply the new pretext.
  11:30am
Dom Chico:

One should never underestimate whats capable of a determined soul, and in the end theres more people determined to keep P2P file sharing ALIVE then there are those that are trying to stop it. Money has absolutely no bearing on this issue at all.
  11:30am
andymorphic:

cyber lockers provide a service. its the users commiting the potential crime. why not blame the gum makes for murder rate?
  11:30am
joe:

What has to be understood here is there a many diffrent arguments that are being lumped togeather. There is an issue of copyright violation weather we like it or not that is the fact though, but there is also the fact that others who don't feel the need to create under the larger system that exists are being indirectly effected in this process and it seems that those that are in the "game" for commerce purposes (which is there business) are having there needs taken into consideration more so then others.

The other issue with the RIAA suits was that they were "representing" companies that they technically did not "represent"

That is quite a lovely picture. All he is missing is a large bloody piece of meat hanging out of his mouth and some Burger King garbage on the ground next to the Benz-O.
