  11:47am
Amanda:

Say what?
  11:47am
glenn:

hark, it no longer sucketh.
  11:49am
Amanda:

Phew! You like to give me a heart attack over here! (Thanks for the update. )
  11:50am
Brain in KU:

I had the same here, glenn.

Good day, Amanda. Got any comedy records?
  11:52am
Amanda:

Hi Brian! Haha, well, I do have some, but I'm not gonna say if I brought them today.
  11:55am
glenn:

that means she did. the old non denial denial ploy. we're onto your evil ways, fair vixen.

Gasp! glenn said I was "fair"! Better than "poor," I guess.

Hi john!
  11:58am
john:

Hey Amanda, I have an Outlook reminder that goes off every Wed to remind me of your show. It's set to remind me foreverrrrrrr.
  11:59am
Carmichael:

I'm here, in theory. Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of music.
  12:00pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I ran as fast as I could. What did I miss?
  12:01pm
glenn:

forsooth, thy fairness is the fairest in radio land.

WOW! GREAT SONG!!!!

Ricardo your brother Ricotto was around yesterday. He's taller than you.

The right side on the Shonen Kniife track was almost inaudible. The current song is fine though.

@ Brain in KU: Re: Ricotto: He smells funny, too.
Not like rich, Corinthian leather.
  12:10pm

Sounds like they're singing 'buy my nose'.
  12:11pm

A little immature perhaps. Not firm & hard with a strong crust.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Amanda:

Hi Ricardo M., and Aaron! Glad you like the Tom Lehrer.

john, thanks for the Outlook reminder. I just set one of those up myself...

maestroso, I noticed that too. Ecch. Well, we'll try to avoid that turntable for now (can't avoid it altogether though.)

O and hi, Van and Listener James!!! AND CARMICHAEL!
  12:16pm

Love this song! The video was hilarious, as well.
  12:17pm
Brain in KU:

Carmichael, was it the voice of H.A.L?
  12:19pm
Carmichael:

He he Brian, it was the voice of Prof. Lehrer. Although HAL does a decent version of "Daisy".
  12:19pm
glenn:

no, it was the voice of tom lehrer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYW50F42ss8

Wendy del Formaggio:

hi Amanda! My lunch break is over and I'm tuned in.

Great Spring show Amanda!
TOM LEHRER! Love that one!
  12:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Was Bad Manners a guy group covering "My Boy Lollipop"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Amanda:

Hey Wendy! Hope the lunch is even cheesier than today's programming. So nice to hear from you.

Hey Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Amanda:

@Matt - yep.
  12:42pm
Brain in KU:

Matt, lead singer was called Buster Bloodvessel.
  12:44pm
Brain in KU:

Amanda, you've gone all Monica, that's a compliment.
  12:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: Wow, great name!
Thanks Amanda. I'm also digging all these classic pop vocals in this set. Nat was/is/ever shall be King.
  12:44pm
Ricardo Montalban:

He also went by Fatty Buster Bloodvessel
  12:45pm
Carmichael:

Although I confuse them with Bad Brains, they were (are?) a two-toned ("integrated") ska band. So My Girl Lollipop is right up their musical alley.
  12:45pm
Van in DC:

National Walking Day today, by the way. Did my 30 minutes already. :)
  12:48pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

I had a tuna sammich (with cheddar), cole slaw, green salad (with feta) and a tiny bag of Cheetos. I guess my lunch was pretty cheesy, but your show is offering serious competition. :-)
  12:48pm
Brain in KU:

Not quite as Two Tone as The Specials or The Selecter.

Technical point, Swindon is due west of London.
  12:49pm
listener james from westwood:

as reverend lovejoy would say, "and it goes on like this." no worries on the garfunkage. onward!
  12:49pm

Not sure if April ever came!!
  12:50pm
listener james from westwood:

or the simonage; i can't distinguish their speaking voices. :)
  12:50pm

Always preview before playing, even on Internet radio!

Interesting to note however: the year Paul Simon was living in England, he was roommates with none other than Al Stewart.

The Jesus and Mary Chain! Yes so psyched!

Bedsitter Images, indeed.

  12:53pm

@Matt: he also wrote Cyrkle's Red Rubber Ball.
  12:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: That's right. Really helped the Cyrkle out.
@Brian: Always wanted to check that album out, so far I haven't.
  12:55pm

efd:

Yay, the Cyclones! One of my favorite bands of that era - this song is killer!
  1:00pm
Big Sausage Pizza:

Brain - Swindon's most famous export?
  1:05pm
Brain in KU:

XTC I would guess.
  1:08pm
Carmichael:

@Brian: I have a soft spot in my heart for the Specials. Message to Rudy is a great song. Saw their horn section back up the Pogues many years ago.
  1:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Occasionally I'll hear something for the first time on FMU, then about a week later hear the same song on a Sirius/XM channel--seems like their programmers are tuning in for ideas!

I heard Rockpile's "Teacher Teacher" on your show, again in Archive, then in my car I heard a familiar intro: they were playing it this Saturday on 1st Wave! And then they played Rockpile's "Heart" the other day. Demand royalties for giving them ideas!
  1:09pm
Michael:

I'd say so. They included a map of Swindon in one of their lp's. Sad Andy and Colin don't speak anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Amanda:

Hi efd! Not shocked that you are a fan of the Cyclones too. @Big Sausage Pizza and @Michael -- so glad that abortive S&G egofest yielded some good discussion of Swindon, at least.

Hiya Bob!
  1:12pm
Brain in KU:

Matt we are the ones with Royalty. Diamond Jubilee, Weddings etc.

There was an excellent DJ who the BBC dumped called Mark Lamarr who came from Swindon. Stunning knowledge of Rock n Roll & Reggae, Ska etc. He would do well on FMU.
  1:12pm
SteveL:

Always liked The Waitresses.
  1:13pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I also liked early Pretenders.
  1:14pm
Brain in KU:

Best thing about Swindon is the road out of town!!
  1:16pm
SteveL:

OK, always liked the Pretenders too. Think I have to get this, since I saw them sometime in 1980. We actually made it up to their hotel room, accompanied by a roadie of someone. THANK GOD they were too tired to party with the likes of us. Not sure I would have survived.
  1:16pm
Carmichael:

I saw the James Honeyman Scott Pretenders, with Iggy Pop opening. Pretty fab concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Amanda:

Wow, SteveL! I'd have gotten into a heap of trouble partying with them (or the Waitresses, for that matter).
  1:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Didn't know the Specials horns played with the Pogues, Carmichael.
  1:17pm
SteveL:

I also have a story about NOT doing cocaine with the Replacements. Perhaps I should write a book.
  1:18pm

First Blondie album is frightfully good.

Brain in KU:

The Waitresses are for life not just for Christmas.
  1:22pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I only ever saw the episode of Square Pegs with Devo on it.
  1:23pm
Ricardo Montalban:

The Waitresses' song I Know What Boys Like did funny things to my hormones when I was a teenager.
  1:24pm
SteveL:

RM: You got THAT right.
  1:27pm
Doug S.:

But that does NOT make me "the man."
  1:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ricardo: I know of Square Pegs because of a Nick At Night marathon from long ago--I saw about four episodes.

Devo was hired by the rich prick girl for a party, then canceled to do SNL, then un-canceled because SNL thought they were hardcore punk with riotous fans or something. That the episode?
  1:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Tune in next week, for "What I Think I Thought I Remembered Theater".
  1:31pm
Carmichael:

Doug, you are Da Man, not to be confused with THE MAN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Amanda:

@Doug -- we have been through this and through this! You are not "the Man," you are the "Man."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Amanda:

Yes, Carmichael said it better
  1:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Love the Black Hollies--just the group to do a faithful cover of "Hush"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Amanda:

I agree! FYI, the Moto-Gators do a good one also.
  1:36pm
Brain in KU:

Next week famous people from Wolverhampton. That should go down like a ...........
  1:36pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Funny how the Square Pegs plotline seemed to have come true for Devo in their middle age. They probably do more corporate appearance shows than proper shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
Amanda:

This is one of the the best song endings in the history of song endings.
  1:39pm
Carmichael:

Good name for a band: The Rich Prick Girl.
  1:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Moto-Gators doing "Hush"? Sweet!

@Ricardo: "Be careful what sitcom plots you involve yourself in..."
Although Mark Mothersbaugh seems to be more heavily in demand solo, writing quirky scores for TV and films.
  1:41pm
Carmichael:

Boy, Devo 2.0 went straight down the dumper in record time, didn't it?
  1:41pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Just watched Devo's appearance on SNL again and read a contemporaneous interview with them from Synapse Magazine and was struck by what a fascinating documentary subject they'd make
  1:42pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I think the DEVO 2.0 happened at the same time they licensed WHip It to that Swiffer commercial. It was all lost in a wash of cleaning products and contracts.
  1:43pm
jaminta80:

I have such distant memories of watching "Square Pegs" that I pretty much have zero recollection of it... but for some reason the DEVO episode is forever burned in my mind...
  1:44pm
efd:

The Cyclones AND Coney Hatch?! Get out of my record collection, Amanda! :)
  1:44pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I also liked their appearances on Fridays, ABC's short-lived SNL clone
  1:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Fridays! Andy Kaufman creating chaos live!
  1:46pm
Carmichael:

I remember them singing while walking on treadmills. That may have been the Fridays show. The song was You Got Me Jerking Back and Forth.
  1:47pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Yes, Carmichael. You are correct.
  1:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

@jaminta: Do you also remember a big commercial promotion leading up to that episode? That could explain it. "Tune in at ___ for Square Pegs! With special appearance by...DEVO!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Amanda:

Oof, Evan, touche. But I was careful to leave the Nick Gilder at home today.
  1:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

No Nick Gilder? I guess this stream doesn't have CanCon requirements, unlike main WFMU during the three hours of Evan's show :)
  1:54pm
jaminta80:

Yea, that's probably why... I was obsessed with DEVO as a kid too... So the sight of seeing them playing some party with those giant white plastic collars proved to be pretty unforgettable!
  1:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

April, Come She Has (Finally!!!)
Amanda was holding down the fast-forward button ever since the first false start an hour ago, and they finally got to the song part.
  1:57pm

Got to hand to DEVO for their dress and sunglasses!

I need to go .. excellent show Amanda! I'll catch the rest on archive.
  2:00pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I agree. Plus, that other person may find the record you're looking for first.
  2:02pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I once found a record that me and another DJ were discussing months previously. We both really, really wanted it. When I found it and told my friend, he sort of went "eh. It's not THAT great..."
  2:04pm
Chris P.:

Almost forgot to tune in today AGAIN...I don't want a repeat of last week where I forgot to tune in live, and Amanda came to my job and pounded my face in. Twas quite an experience.
  2:04pm
Sour Grapes:

@Ricardo: This is what you would call it. I come from an Aesop fable.
  2:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Start a fan club for them--The Association Association!
  2:05pm
Ricardo Montalban:

It was Sour Grapes, but The Aesops. How did you know? Toby? Is that you?
  2:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

And conferences! The Association of Associated The Association Associations!
  2:06pm
Ricardo Montalban:

All this silly jabber jawin'! I keep meaning to say that this is a wonderful show, Amanda!
  2:06pm
Sour Grapes:

Nope, I'm not Toby.
(And besides, Toby's not THAT great...)
  2:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

I agree Ricardo, wonderful show today!
Amanda has no complaints about us? Great, we don't have any about her show!
  2:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

CHAD AND JEREMY! (I think) they were better than Peter & Gordon, more of a folk duo. Even singing Ian & Sylvia!
  2:09pm
Brain in KU:

Chad & Jeremy frightfully nice English chaps.
No complaints, when was this show last risk assessed?
  2:10pm
Ricardo Montalban:

And considerably calmer than Sylvie and Babs

Welcome back Chris P.!
  2:12pm
glenn:

hark, ye olde english fellow hath spoke.
  2:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

I know this is the later part of the show Amanda, but make sure to annotate that "Tighter, Tighter" was written for this group by Tommy James.

He was writing "Crystal Blue Persuasion" for them, then loved it so much he kept it for himself! Tommy then gave this to them instead.
  2:13pm
glenn:

hey, where can one find crippled cock farmyard scrumpy in london?
  2:13pm
kat330:

Hi, Amanda! Been a busy, appointment-filled day for me, but better late than never.
  2:13pm
glenn:

maybe that should be spake, not spoke.
  2:14pm
Doug S.:

Hey, happy birthday, kat330!
  2:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, is this meant to be a 33 rpm Crystals, or just a miscue? :)
  2:14pm
Chris P.:

This sounds like the O'Jays singing it. It's quite amazing.
  2:15pm
kat330:

Oh, wow, that's a whole week's worth of well wishing -- thanks, Doug! I gather you got my email about streaming on my new box?
  2:15pm

It's your birthday kat330? Happy birthday!

Van, I believe you wished me that on the actual day (last Friday), but hey, I'll take it whenever I get it! :)
  2:17pm
Brain in KU:

glenn it's probably from Devo(n)/Somerset or Herefordshire. A lot of these ciders do not travel well. Not come across a crippled cock if you'll pardon the expression.
The nitrous oxide part of the show.
  2:17pm
Doug S.:

@kat330, did indeed. Will try to help

@Carmichael, I hope you are feeling better than you were on Ken's playlist earlier.
  2:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: They still got it! They did play more 70s/80s hits than I cared for, but I got to hear several of their well-known 60s songs by the original guys! (And you could tell the original guys--all of 'em had snow white hair!)
  2:18pm
kat330:

It was on Friday (thusthe 3/30 in my handle) but thanks, Amanda! I missed Chad & Jeremy?! [pout]
  2:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Oh yeah...Goooooooo ARIES!! :)
  2:19pm

Thanks Doug. Not much better, but hopefully it will pass.
  2:19pm

How did Rachel Sweet survive that Stiff tour in the 70s?
  2:20pm

@Matt: Mollusk! So, no "Go Now"?
  2:21pm
Doug S.:

Oh poor Mark Sandman. Dead at freaking 46. Died on stage fer chrissakes.

@glenn: I looked up above and see an Ian & Sylvia convo. "Someday Soon" was always part of my folk repertoire, but now I sing it with rather cynically altered lyrics to match the age change.

Matt from Springfield:

They did "Go Now", though I wish they had sang "Legend of a Mind"--that was the biggest omission.
  2:25pm
kat330:

What's wrong, Carm? If something on Ken's show (I had to miss the whole shebang) was to blame, give me a heads-up before I hit the archives. ;)
  2:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

Woo hoo! Name check! Anecdote check, even!
  2:26pm
kat330:

Did they at least rock "Go Now"?
  2:30pm
Carmichael:

Just feeling generally crappy, for the 2nd day in a row. I can't blame Ken, though I often try to.
  2:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh yeah, as well as "Question", "See-Saw", and couple others I didn't know the titles of, were rocked VERY hard! Great mix of mellow and driving, and background kaleidoscopic visuals to boot!
  2:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Santa Lucia" is an old Italian standard, but never heard it till now! Of course Miss Francis did a recording of that in the 50s--very nice vocal, thanks!
  2:31pm
kat330:

Heh! (on the Ken comment) Sorry on the generally crappy...:( Did Ken transmit his Lyme disease o'er the waves?
  2:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Teresa Brewer--thought this was Jeannie C. Riley at first! Now I'm intrigued, I'll have to request the other 15 songs sometime!
  2:34pm
Dan in Seattle:

Teresa Brewer was married to Bob Thiele, the Impulse Records producer who gave John Coltrane free reign to record virtually any time he wanted. Thiele later started Flying Dutchman Records.

Brain in KU:

Ever heard of Craze Finton Kirk written by the BGs. Supposed to be about a character on the London streets in the 60s. Catchy chorus. Not heard it for must be 30 years. Where did that come from?
  2:40pm
Doug S.:

Jesus that was gorgeous.

I am watching the antics of Toto with interest
  2:43pm
Carmichael:

My dog looks just like Toto. Cairn Terrier, silver and black.
  2:44pm
kat330:

I can vouch there are a lot of yellow buildings in Helsinki.
  2:45pm
Artie:

So she resembles Kansas Toto, not Over A Rainbow Toto. Wasn't that one brown? (Can't believe I just name checked Kansas and Toto in one post)
  2:45pm
Carmichael:

Richard Thompson!
  2:46pm
kat330:

RT!
  2:47pm
kat330:

This should make you feel better, Carmichael. It does me.

Amanda:

Hi Artie! Toto was salt-and-pepper, in both environments. :-)
  2:51pm
kat330:

Amanda, I followed Matt's link to your very first 'cast he posted here last week and listened to the archive. He was quite right, you were fine from the get-go!
  2:52pm
Carmichael:

Wasn't the Scaffold a light comedy group?
  2:52pm
Brain in KU:

Thanks Carmichael.

There was always a lot of debate about what the Aintree Iron was? Never did resolve it.
  2:52pm
jaminta80:

We're actually working on a Ricahrd Thompson cover song right now...and Toto one!
  2:53pm
kat330:

Which RT? Mollusk in advance since I don't think there's a bad possibility in the bunch.
  2:54pm
Brain in KU:

Gotta cut out. Great show Amanda. Dinners burning. Ying Tong.
  2:55pm
Van in DC:

Thanks for the show today Amanda!
  2:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nice show Amanda, we're now all prepared for Spring!

Have a great afternoon, everyone!
  2:57pm
Carmichael:

Thank you again, Amanda. See you next week.
  2:57pm
jaminta80:

We're doing either "Walking on a Wire" or "Wall of Death" we haven't decided yet...the "Wall fo Death" sounds cooler but I'm aware that one gets covered quite a bit, so we'll probably end up doing "Walking on a Wire"
  2:59pm
kat330:

Love them both! Thanks Amanda!!
  2:59pm
Chris P.:

Looking forward to catching the rest of this show in the archives. Another championship winning show, I'm sure.

How awesome, Jamin. TA-80 and RT are two great tastes that taste great together!

@kat330, thank you so much for that!!! I think it was Danne who generously posted that link.

See you all next week! xoxo!
