Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Thanks for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show. Prior to air-time, I was going to simply play a 52-minute recorded version of '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" because I was feeling poorly. But, attention-hogg that I can be, I decided to giev it a go with Fabio in tow and see what we could come up with for an hour. I do notice that listener comments were scant for this show compared to normal, indicating the show was kind of a dud, and I would concur, no offense to callers, whom are always appreciated. If I'm going to be honest, I'd have to say that I have dropped the ball in the last couple of weeks, since scaling back my Occupy Coverage. I admit to having been very busy with life and feeling the need to recharge batteries to a degree. Hard to explain, but I do feel a kind of guilt that I have shortchanged you a little, and for that I apologize. Hopefully I'll be able to ramp it up as the coming weeks unfold, although, with Summer, I do like to experiment a little, relax a little, tell some stories, etc. I hope you'll stay with me and see where it leads. As for Duel In The Dirt, have I read it before? Maybe. I didn't think I had, but my wife thought I did. I read THIS version just prior to broadcast and enjoyed it. ideally, I'd liked to have put background music and sound FX with it, but it didn't work out that way. I should mention that story is inspired by the dirt track racing days of my youth. My family would often attend dirt track races on weekends, rooting for our favorite, The Flying Farmer, Lloyd Jorgensen of Audubon, Iowa. I'm sure he is the inspiration for Hod Blankenship. And as for Dickie Deems, he is the written embodiment of a driver named Mike Chapman of Whiting, Iowa, who did drive a car with an "X" painted on the side. Those were fun times. The track is closed these days, overgrown with weeds. It's always remembered though ... on Dusty.

Clay P - NYC

First Day of Summer - 2012 Love to you all.

I really really loved this story about Blankenship
  6:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nice story Clay. Less Twilight Zone this time, more like a narrative slice of Americana. Kind of like "Leiningen Versus the Ants" in a way. Brains prevailing over power.

I loooooooooooveeeeeeeeeee mezcal. Too bad it's hard to find here unless you go to Astor Place Liquors. Although both tequila and mezcal both come from agave, the production is different.

@Matt: I have no iPhone, I'm not fancy! I'm listening on my desktop mac from home.

Checking in, havent been able to post much today, running around.

Missed last 30 mins of Fabio's show to listen in to the yearly BBC shortwave broadcast to the British Antarctic stations, which was a real throwback to a bygone age

Come on Clay, revitalize that "CanadaJazz" and make it into a beat!

Hi OD!
So, what's new in Antarctica right now? Beginning of Winter, at the southernmost part of the world.
  6:27pm
david:

must sound like numbers stations or something, those antarctic broadcasts...
  6:27pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Clay! You should play Herb Albert's "Rise" in the background.

Hello you guys. Thanks for listening. Good to see your names up there. I've been really busy the past couple of weeks and haven't been able to fulfill my Dusty Show duties
  6:28pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Or this!
  6:28pm
other david:

@Matt - apparently the 40 odd people in the British stations get this week off and party as best they can! The broadcast had was all of their families saying hello and stuff, was twee and cute, and no doubt a very welcome taste of home for them :)
  6:29pm
Caryn:

Damn computer problems, I missed Clay's story! I guess the archives are calling again...
  6:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hello Phillip in San Antonio!
I found your original question, which recommended seeing Neil Hamburger. He IS apparently on tour, and coming to Richmond VA in August! I'm going to try to get into that!
  6:31pm
sfrances:

@ other david: cheers to you the in Antarctic, my husband has a cousin who is there on & off doing research

@Matt: Hot indeed. Lucky for me this Williamsburg Alewerks beer (Springhouse Ale to be specific) is available at my local organic market.
  6:32pm
Carmichael:

One of the best Beach Boy songs ever (along with I Can Hear Music).

See you Clay/Fab.
  6:33pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

I've seen him 5 times now and he never gets old. He has a great Tony Clifton feel.
  6:34pm
dale:

caller, are you wearing slacks or trousers?
  6:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: I've been having Flash streaming issues at work, though my 128k is doing fairly well right now.

Beach Boys is "Girl Don't Tell Me", from '65. There's a whole bunch of great BBs songs from right before Pet Sounds, and perhaps they don't get the exposure they should. "Let Him Run Wild" is another I recently stumbled on that I really like.
  6:34pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

I'm pretty sure Andy Kaufman was an influence.
  6:35pm
sfrances:

Dusty: You Iowans! My Ackley husband also likes the extreme heat & exreme cold to be reminded he's alive. Me, I'll pass on the record setting climate change effects...

@Matt: Ooooh, Todd Barry is also on the bill w/Neil. I liked Neil better before the hipsters were in the fix. He's funnier to me when the audience *doesn't* get it and there's so much room to roll in those awkward long pauses.
  6:36pm
Ralphine:

Did anybody see the Dukes of September Revue on Jimmy Fallon's show not too long ago? They did a decent cover of the Brothers Johnson.
  6:36pm
Dave in PA:

Ed Leedskalnin
  6:37pm
Caryn:

@Matt: my flash stream is fine, but my browser has crashed 4-5 times today, and the net is incredibly slow. It can take half an hour for a page to load.
  6:39pm
Some Flash Guy:

The new flash stream has been clipping after streaming for an hour or so and regroups after a refresh...
  6:40pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

I really wish my parents never sold my old pulp comics from the 40's. I remember a really lame Bob Hope comic that was a part of that lot.
  6:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha! I was JUST about to type Jimmy Olson, Fabio!
I only learned of that series through the Superdickery website, "Superman Is A Dick":

Woo, The Smiths!
  6:48pm

  6:49pm

The Smiths have never sounded better than with a hung up phone dial tone in the background.
  6:49pm
Descartes:

I thought this was Lou Reed's sister, instead of Morrissey
  6:50pm
Caryn:

Now I feel nostalgic for my university years, much of which were spent in lectures and seminars about The Smiths.
  6:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

@frances: That did add an, *interesting* touch to it! :)
  6:50pm
Morrissey:

I touched Clay!

  6:53pm

I once danced and sang along to The Smiths down the aisle of a Yorkshire supermarket. I wonder what the other customers thought...
  6:53pm
Morrissey:

Tewksbury.
  6:55pm
Morrissey:

the Magic Pan in Paramus anyone?
  6:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: "Oy, 'nother turist..." :)
Maybe more of a reaction for Mancs!
  6:57pm
sfrances:

thx for the mention, Clay~right after the Smiths phone off the hook my neighbor's car alarm went off....Coincidence?

  6:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Remember, and continue to remember!
  6:58pm
Caryn:

@Matt: heh! Of course, I lived there at the time. But it's the fault of Co-op. If you play "There is a Light that Never Goes Out", I'm going to let the music take me away.
  6:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Clay and Fabio! Always a fun time when we get the chat-and-calls!
Have a good night everyone!
