José Cañusi:

You call?
  7:04pm
Kendall!:

Nearly worse than Roseanne's rendition
  7:05pm
Kendall!:

except for that "wave"
wow
  7:05pm
Caryn:

I always thought "America the Beautiful" would be a better national anthem. Partly because it's easier to sing, so you don't get performances like this...
  7:05pm
Cliff:

*golf clap*
  7:08pm
Under God:

I wasn't even added to the Pledge until 1954, a moral panicking Congress inserted me in amid McCarthyist fear of communists. If you didn't believe in one transcendent God, and pledge "under God", you must be a commie. Tell that to the Rand-worshippers today...
  7:08pm
FrankenNewYork:

The "under God" was not in the original pledge. It was added, I think in the 50's. And you don't have to put your hand on a bible when you're being sworn in.
  7:08pm
?:

Teach your baby to throw her hands in the air, like she just don't care!
  7:09pm
Kendall!:

The Bible is the #1 best-selling book in the world period
  7:09pm
Sam:

@Franken: Can you swear on a Constitution, like they just said?
  7:10pm
Kendall!:

Also, the Strand in NYC has the Bible on the same shelf unit as the Paranormal section, which is pretty funny.
  7:10pm
Max Weinberg:

Hey, that's me! Dig those thunderous drum hits!
  7:11pm
Pink Houses:

Well ain't that America...ambiguous, pros and cons, America just is...
  7:12pm
Sam:

"4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)", that's a beautiful one, it is a great song! Play it!
  7:13pm
Caryn:

The pledge was written by socialist Francis Bellamy for a Columbus Day booklet in 1892. It went "I pledge allegiance to my flag and the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." In 1923, "my flag" was changed to "the flag of the United States". "Of America" was added in 1924. Various religious leaders introduced the "under god" from 1948 onwards, and Congress accepted it as official in 1954.
  7:15pm
Kendall!:

Quakers 4 lyfe, yo! Shout out to all my Quaker brothers out there
  7:17pm
Caryn:

Yay for Quakers! You are fine people and your Oats are a-ok.
  7:18pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Man, I missed the first fifteen minutes of the show. I'm bummed! (Not like this own't be archived or anything...
  7:19pm
Chris C.:

In English I am "Christopher Column". Why mix English and Latin? I don't get it.
  7:19pm
clayton:

christophe colomb in france.
  7:21pm
FrankenNewYork:

Educated people knew the world was round. Chris Columbus argued that the world was smaller than it acutally is, there were 2 interpetations of the Greek measurment (Stadia). Columbus was wrong of course but went to his grave arguing he found a route to India not a new continet.
  7:22pm
Caryn:

It is debatable whether we should use the Italian Cristoforo Colombo or the Latin Christophorus Columbus, considering the importance of the Latin-speaking Catholic Church in Genoa at that time. Of course, it was just recently debated whether Columbus was actually Jewish, so maybe there's a Hebrew name somewhere...
  7:23pm
DPCD:

"anyone" means the millions of lawbreaking immigrants who are now here pretending they are just like anyone else, except they don't have ID, pay taxes, or really care about anything but making money. they contribute so much, for various off-the book enterprises!
Yesterday we were supposed to feel great hearing about the newly sworn-in people currently serving in our armed forces- a right any mercenary might care about, given the great benefits afforded that group!
  7:25pm
Caryn:

The earliest known use of the name America dates from April 25, 1507, where it was used for what is now known as South America. It first appears on a small globe map with twelve time zones, together with the largest wall map made to date, both created by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges in France. These were the first maps to show the Americas as a land mass separate from Asia. An accompanying book, Cosmographiae Introductio, anonymous but apparently written by Waldseemüller's collaborator Matthias Ringmann, states, "I do not see what right any one would have to object to calling this part [that is, the South American mainland], after Americus who discovered it and who is a man of intelligence, Amerigen, that is, the Land of Americus, or America: since both Europa and Asia got their names from women". Americus Vespucius is the Latinized version of the Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci's name, and America is the feminine form of Americus. Amerigen is explained as Amerigo plus gen, the accusative case of the Greek word for 'earth', and meaning 'land of Amerigo'.
  7:25pm
Dan B From Upstate:

I've read a book (fiction, mind you) in which Egyptians came to North America hundreds of years before Columbus N Pals.

I'd say it's plausible.
  7:26pm
Dave in PA:

Rembrandt Toothpaste is named after Rembrandt Van Rijn
  7:27pm
hobosnacks:

Pyramids are Tesla towers
  7:28pm
Caryn:

Virginia is named for Queen Victoria, the Virgin Queen. As are Victoria Falls. No last names involved.
  7:29pm
Caryn:

I mean Queen Elizabeth I about Virginia... dammit.
  7:30pm
rob:

Daves' mic keeps scramblin, ugly transmissions
  7:30pm
DPCD:

"Free" is a myth, for sure. The Pilgrims had slaves.
  7:31pm
Dave in PA:

Ritchie Blackmore wore a hat buckle from time to time.
  7:33pm
Caryn:

You were "free" if you were a white man who was not a slave or indentured servant. So a pretty limited group.
  7:35pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

Whoops, I forgot today was Thursday.
  7:36pm
DPCD:

Wow, bad transmission. You are eventually going to say that we are trying to calm the hellholes of the world so they won't all come here and steal our shit. Because they sure would if we let them!
  7:38pm
Cliff:

Catching up on comments: The Vikings made it to Greenland in the 11th century, and Basque fishermen sailed there regularly in the 14th century, a good century before Columbus. There was even a Inuit/Basque pidgin that developed back then.
  7:39pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Sounds like Dave's in favor of the 'Amero.'
  7:39pm
DPCD:

Glenn, back me up. This would be a better country if we could be more like you guys.
Elections for example.
  7:39pm
rob:

The dutch were hear first.
  7:40pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

People are just scared for no reason
  7:42pm
FrankenNewYork:

Dan B have you heard of Kon Tiki? An anthropolgist thinks that Egyptians may have come to the Americas in reed boats. He even built one.
  7:42pm
Caryn:

At the end of the last ice age, fishermen followed the edge of the ice from Europe to North America regularly.
  7:43pm
Dan B From Upstate:

I haven't heard of him, Franken. I'll read up!
  7:43pm
Caryn:

Medical research is extremely high class in the US. Actual health care: piss-poor.
  7:45pm
FrankenNewYork:

I think most of the people who don't want universal health care just don't want to pay for other people to get health care. But they already do because everytime someone can't pay for treatment it forces the price up for the ones who can, so in my opinion it's better to get the buld discount by having everyone get insurance.
  7:46pm
FrankenNewYork:

sorry Bulk discount
  7:47pm
Cliff:

Yeah, conservatives HATE freeloaders. That's what they mean when they scream "Socialism!"
  7:50pm
Caryn:

The guy in the Kon-Tiki was Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. If you want to read about his theory, Dan B, read his book "Kon-Tiki". Of course the vast majority of anthropologists nowadays believe Heyerdahl was totally wrong. But his experiment was interesting. His theory was not about Egyptians, but about Polynesians crossing the Pacific to the US. He later made 2 papyrus boats to try and prove Egyptians also came to the US. Those are written about in "The Ra Expeditions". He has similar theories about Norwegians in Russia. Most of his ideas have been totally panned. Interesting guy, though.
  7:54pm
DPCD:

I wanted to move to Canada, but unfortunately am a US Citizen. Their law prohibits me from having a job there for 3 years after the move date. DANG!
Anyway, while there last week I met a Phillipine immigrant couple. She got pregnant on arrival, per their plan. They now enjoy a full year paid maternity leave for her, plus a 6 month paternity leave for him, and all costs for baby's pre, post, delivery care paid. They showed up last October to work in a fish processing facility, and probably have a total of 1 month's work put in between them. In 3 years they can get a Canadian passport and come laugh at Filipinos here!
MY point: be smart an don't come to "America." Canada is by far a better place to live in 2012. Unless you are a US Citizen.
  7:58pm
Cliff:

Yeah, but Canada's cold.
  7:58pm
Kendall!:

They didn't attack or fight because Jesus taught the disciples to be non-violent.
  8:00pm
DPCD:

@Cliff- getting warmer all the time!
