  3:13pm
dc p@:

who is this Jihn Cage I keep hearing about?
  3:14pm
DCE:

I could use a gin cage about now.
  3:14pm
nic:

yay john cage_awesome
  3:14pm
Heisenberg:

It's indeterminate
  3:15pm
hubba:

if there's a hell below... we're all going to go... Hey Fabio!
  3:15pm
DCE:

a gin cave might even be better.
  3:15pm
J.C.:

Who is Jihn Cage? Japanese interpreter perhaps.
  3:17pm
northguineahills:

I'm all for the gin cave.
  3:17pm
steve:

hey all... does anyone know of an anechoic chamber in the US that's open to the public?
  3:19pm
dc p@:

I think a gin cage would be more direct. I'll take that if no one is using it...
  3:19pm
BSI:

[wakes up suddenly]
alcoholic chamber? whut?
  3:21pm
Cheri Pi:

BOOZE. I want it now.
  3:21pm
dc p@:

I guess you could take a motorcycle helmet, put it on, fill it with gin from a special valve in the top, have straws going up your nose leading out of 2 holes cut in the face mask....that might work.
  3:23pm
hubba:

"Come on folks, we're going a trip..."
  3:24pm
Parq:

John Cage is the Hilary Clinton of music; just the name is enough to send the field's reactionaries into a rage.
  3:24pm
DCE:

inventive group of people, y'all are...
  3:24pm
Cheri Pi:

I want a soundless chamber like John Cage, filled with booze.
  3:27pm
dc p@:

what ever happened to vodka bags anyway?
  3:30pm
Cheri Pi:

the high tones are the vodka, the low tones are your nervous system.
  3:31pm
stefica:

I finally saw the John Cage installation One11 and 103 on the High Line last week. I bitterly regret that I didn't spend the whole summer there.

  3:31pm
DCE:

soooo sleeeepy
  3:32pm
hubba:

After I had been studying with him for two years, Schoenberg said, "In order to write music, you must have a feeling for harmony." I explained to him that I had no feeling for harmony. He then said that I would always encounter an obstacle, that it would be as though I came to a wall through which I could not pass. I said, "In that case I will devote my life to beating my head against that wall."
  3:32pm
DCE:

the office being about 84 deg is not helping
  3:32pm
dc p@:

low tones are your blood being replaced by vodka...
  3:33pm
dc p@:

jeeze my office is like 52 degrees (F).
  3:34pm
Cheri Pi:

I have my heater on in my office, it's 88 degrees outside.
  3:34pm
hubba:

"When I hear what we call music, it seems to me that someone is talking. And talking about his feelings, or about his ideas of relationships. But when I hear traffic, the sound of traffic—here on Sixth Avenue, for instance—I don't have the feeling that anyone is talking. I have the feeling that sound is acting. And I love the activity of sound [...] I don't need sound to talk to me."
  3:34pm
northguineahills:

Is dc p@ real?
  3:35pm
DCE:

is anything real??
  3:36pm
DCE:

existential moment of the day...
  3:36pm
100% real dc pat:

^ everything ok now?
  3:37pm
Factory Oven:

Just read this good LA Times story about his early years: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/culture/la-et-cm-john-cage,0,3501401.htmlstory It lead to a video of JC talking about silence, in which the passage quoted by hubba appeared. I love Cage's public persona and his music, but in the video he surprisingly and needlessly demeaned Beethoven and Mozart, claiming they sound "the same" where traffic is always different. This is dubious, I think.
  3:39pm
100% real dc pat:

Factory: well he's right--traffic IS always different because it's always improvised whereas Mozart and Beethoven aren't. Doesn't necessarily mean they suck--I like them. But I think he has a point.
  3:44pm
hubba:

we could tlak about iterations of Mozart and Beethoven, making them more indeterminate, reproductions of a base production... or, we could say that traffic is determinate, while sounds may seem indeterminate, there is a base structure that guids what type of sounds are available, time of day, given infrastructure, etc... you're not likely to hear a jet take off, a fire truck roar, and an ice cream man coming down the street form the same place/range... if you are, then i think you're in a Jerry Bruckheimer film.
  3:46pm
Factory Oven:

1RDCP: Yeah, in a simplistic way. I mean, Cage scripted his pieces, too. And LVB and WAM worked within conventions of appropriate levels of improvisation. Besides, surely Cage heard the massive differences among even recorded performances of, say, a Beethoven sonata!
  3:52pm
aeiou:

John had an extra vowel hangin'!
  3:54pm
northguineahills:

I have two different LPs of different performances of Variations IV ( recorded the same night at Feigen-Palmer Gallery in LA), one found in a junk store in Bed-Stuy for 50 cents.
  3:55pm
nic:

so great so great to hear all of this_really wonderful
  4:00pm
hubba:

While his position is argueable, I'd have to say his rhetoric is refreshing and deserving of further discussion. I think his ability to articulate ideas is all you could generate linguistically when trying to conceptualize dynamics of sound, the position of the composer and audience, and the plausible dialogue one could even engage in.
Basically, how does Jerry Bruckheimer feel about John Cage?
  4:01pm
hubba:

John Cage, the structural functionalist...
  4:02pm
Carmichael:

Hubba, you're in deep mode today. Cousteau-like deep ...
  4:03pm
hubba:

zing!
  4:03pm
100% real dc pat:

I guess we're talking about differences in scale with Beethoven performances being on one end and the sound of a thunderstorm maybe being on the other...and Cage being somewhere in the middle. All's I'm saying is that none of it really matters without vodka bags...
  4:06pm
Parq:

Bruckheimer on Cage: "Isn't he the guy who claims he wrote a symphony or something with nothing but silence? Hah! What a goniff! I love a guy who can pull off a con like that!"
  4:06pm
100% real dc pat:

I have to go ride a bike now so if you'll excuse me....thanks for the conversation, thanks for the tunes Fab.

This set is being accentuated by practice flyovers from the Air Force Thunderbirds. Big air show this weekend at the former Mather AFB, where I am ensconsed. Kinda dots the "i" on this whole show ...
  4:22pm
Parq:

Carm, sounds brilliant in both the US and UK/IR senses of the word. I am enjoying the music and comments way too much, given my workload.
  4:23pm
khd:

I've been away for a few years without an internet connection and what's the first thing i hear when I tune back in to WFMU? A 3 hour John Cage tribute. I could've guessed...
  4:27pm

Clay will probably find some Top 40 Cage cover songs.

Night Al:

While a student at the University of Florida's Music department back in 1982, one of my classes was held in a professors small dark attic office. One day he gave us the assignment of composing a piece that lacked all melody, structure, and meter. It had to be written on sheet music and ready to be performed by anyone who could read music. I found this very hard. I composed my work and asked the bassoonist to perform it in class. The professor said it was way to structured and melodic. I can play music like some of John Cage's works, but catching it on sheet music eludes me.
  5:49pm
nic:

wow this is all so awesome_what a great show_thanks so much
  5:49pm
northguineahills:

I took some music classes at the University of Florida, but it was in the mid-late 90s.
  5:50pm
northguineahills:

(I wasn't a music student), I just took some theory and electro-acoustic casses.
  5:51pm
Night Al:

I asked that professor if he ever taught anyone that went on th fame. He said the only one I would recognize was probably Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers band.
  5:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

100th anniversary, as we call it.

Really enjoyable show. End of show sparring w Clay is always a real bonus.

NORMAL bias!?!
  5:57pm
Night Al:

James Taylor just played the DNC stage. 3 tunes. Going to Carolina, You've Got A Friend, and How Sweet It Is. He came out and said, "I know a lot of you got nervous when you saw me walk up to this empty chair, but I'm going to sit on it not talk to it.
