Listener comments!

  12:06pm
pierre:

Bon-to-the-jour Duane !
  12:07pm
Cecile:

you can sing "it was a very good year" to this.

hi, duane!
  12:07pm
dale:

i wonder if the little gilligan's island run is intentional.
  12:08pm
Caryn:

Never heard this song before. Liking it! Nice start as always, Duane!
  12:09pm
Cecile:

wow, this feels like some dude who should have been in Slacker.
  12:10pm
βrian:

Ayeh!
  12:12pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Hello, people.
  12:12pm
Cecile:

and for an obscure reference this sounds like Suddenly Tammy! meets GusGus.
  12:13pm
Duane:

Hello Everybody..Happy Humpty
  12:13pm
doyle:

L.Hazelwood... sounds kinda like Clay Pigeon's voice. No?
  12:14pm
Cecile:

speaking of the 90s, I bought a .99 cent copy of the Baby fox CD, and it was pretty cool. Never heard of 'em before your show.
  12:15pm
Duane:

Oh cool Cecille..That Babyfox chick went on to write the lyrcis to "Ray of Light"..no joke!
  12:16pm
Cecile:

wow, nice. It's one of the few Madonna songs after the first album I really like.
  12:17pm
Cecile:

and nice that she got a nice big paycheck out of it.
  12:19pm
Cecile:

do you have any Moloko kicking around there?
  12:19pm
tim from champaign:

I'm a Duaniac!
  12:20pm
?:

Moloko! I used to dig them...
  12:20pm
Duane:

I think I have some of Roisin's solo stuff around here, but Moloko not so much..I'll check though.
Hey Tim!!! Thanx for checkin in,bro!!
  12:21pm
robyn:

morning all.
  12:21pm
Cecile:

Roisin would also be good, whatever works!
  12:21pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

That Moloko comment was mine, for some reason my name didn't take...
  12:22pm
Cecile:

one of my dreams is to be at a retro disco night in London and hear Sing it Back on the dancefloor.
  12:22pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

I remember buying a Moloko CD at Heathrow on my way back to NYC sometime in 2001
  12:22pm
Cecile:

ah, i know how that goes, Jan.
  12:23pm
Duane:

Hey Jan!!
I've been to that Disco, Cecile ;) Only it was in NYC. Francois K played it
  12:23pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

I still listen to Sing it Back... Not ashamed at all.
  12:24pm
Jeremy Shatan:

I know no Moloko. Call me koo koo.
  12:24pm
Cecile:

Hey, I bonded with some cool Irish writers on Twitter over our love of Moloko.
Awesome, Duane!
  12:25pm
Cecile:

great sexy trip-hop-disco-soul-uncatgorizable music with vocals from Roisin Murphy, the spiritual successor to Noosha Fox.
  12:27pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Of course you know where the name "Moloko" Droog talk for "milk" from A Clockwork Orange...
  12:27pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Better than Morcheeba?
  12:28pm
kata:

morning !
  12:28pm
Cecile:

yup!
  12:29pm
chinchilla:

I think I'm gettin a little hotness on Duane's mic, or is that just me and my crappy computer speakers?
  12:29pm
Caryn:

I own only "Things to Make and Do". Should hear the other, though. Moloko were good.
  12:29pm
Cecile:

Jeremy: To me they are, but I can't speak for all.
  12:30pm
Cecile:

chin, he sounds a little crispy
  12:30pm
still b/p:

I'm gettin' those hot audio peaks, too.
  12:32pm
chinchilla:

Amateurs, I tells ya.
  12:33pm
Cecile:

I should find that 70s Christmas issue of Stereo review where they just list all the things they hate. Some of them were Billy Paul, LaBelle and David Bowie. Yikes.
  12:34pm
Cecile:

chinchilla, it's like nobody pays them.
  12:34pm
suea:

HEY DJ!!! is your mic buzzing? check your volume!!!
  12:35pm
r i s k y:

Duane, your Popping on the mic! Headsup
  12:35pm
Cecile:

it's better.
  12:36pm
Duane:

YEah we got it. the mic problems are fixed now..just listen to the muzak!
  12:38pm
pierre:

that bass is superior
  12:38pm
Cheri Pi:

Greeting Duane & the Gang! back from a delicious lunch, let's get funky.
  12:39pm
tim from champaign:

Something tells me that DJing a Weight Watchers party in the midwest would not be as fun as the party Duane DJ'd.
  12:41pm
Cecile:

you've got falafel, Cheri.
  12:42pm
Cheri Pi:

haha- thanks Cecile!
  12:42pm
Cecile:

I don't know. I think they'd be fun, too. I think they would be moving because they would get extra exercise points that way. >>>>veteran of that program.
  12:42pm
kata:

oh Duane. Thank you !
  12:45pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Thanks for that horrorshow reminder, Jan. I'll check'em out.
  12:47pm
tim from champaign:

I'm actually 3/4 serious about joining up with WW, Cecile. If my new plan of keeping away from over indulging in beer and cheese does not work, then I'm there.
  12:47pm
Cecile:

just when I thought I couldn't love Todd Rundgren any more.
  12:48pm
Duane:

My sis swears by it Tim
  12:49pm
pierre:

(the volume is at the max here — doing the dishes)

FAAAA—LAAAA—FEEEELS !!!
  12:51pm
Cecile:

I applaud WW for being sensible. I also have friends who it worked for. It did work for me for a while untilI had the familiar feeling of being locked in a box with no air. usually about 4 months into any kind of program.
  12:51pm
steve:

Todd Rundgren remixes Lindstrom? its not the other way around??
  12:52pm
Duane:

Nope Steve..It's Mad Todd through an Through
  12:52pm
Cecile:

but that's me. My issues could fill a book which Wendy Shanker already wrote.
  12:54pm
Cecile:

killer seg, duane!
  12:54pm
steve:

wow, awesome
  12:55pm
tim from champaign:

I dig the program too. My wife digs it. I like that one can still eat tasty and healthy food. I exercise quite a bit (swimming, elliptical machine) 3-4x/week and ride my bike and walk everywhere. Still as a young middle aged man with a slowing metabolism, being a good eater and drinker does not help.
  12:58pm
Cecile:

it is a lot easier even from 2-3 years ago to get program friendly food just about anywhere.
  1:06pm
Cecile:

hey, Duane, what do you think about having a column for year on your playlist? You have old stuff sounding futurist, and new stuff sounding retro. It's fun to see what's what.
  1:07pm
Neg-guh-tor:

Oh, shit. This Zipadeediodah thing is too good/funny, Duane!
  1:08pm
Duane:

That's a good idea Cecile!! I'll do that..but y'all have to keep reminding me if I forget
  1:09pm
Cecile:

neg-guh-tor, it sounds like the Kids from Zoom at 30.
  1:09pm
Neg-guh-tor:

I had some spirited and dangerous conversations about Song of the South in the past. Disney people are just fucked up.
  1:10pm
Cecile:

is this your fave Don Covay?
  1:11pm
Cecile:

Yeah.
But the Uncle remus stuff is subversive. Those tales are coded to hell. Far from cute little Aesop fables or Disney.
  1:11pm
Duane:

I love Covay, but this is Dan Penn
  1:11pm
Cecile:

no, Dan Penn! Damn, he sounds different. Less gruff.
  1:12pm
Cecile:

actually Aesop's fables are pretty salty in their way, too.
  1:12pm
still b/p:

The flick that dare not show all its frames.

Speakin' of flicks -- one on Sundance channel this afternoon has this description:
"The history of Colombia's thirty-year struggle with international
drug trafficking seen through the eyes of a pet hippopotamus."

...!
  1:14pm
Cecile:

this is the weirdest f'ing version of this song I ever heard.
  1:14pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

The first time I heard "Bird on a Wire" wasn't Cohen's original, it was Dave Van Ronk, singing in his total cracked whiskey voice, I must've been 8-9 years old...
  1:14pm
Cecile:

ooh, thanks for the dates, Duane!
  1:15pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Yeah Jackie D!
  1:15pm
Jeremy Shatan:

This is a fantastic version. Nothing weird that I can hear.
  1:16pm
Cecile:

it's weird to me hearing it in a Memphis soul kind of setting. I always think of it as being more reflective and folky.
  1:16pm
pierre:

Françoise :)
  1:16pm
kata:

dammit, workplace bullshit causing me to miss most of the show..
  1:17pm
Brian in UK:

Francoise sings Phil.
  1:20pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Syreeta... ok!
  1:20pm
sugarwolf:

Hey Cecile, I've danced to Sing it Back on a London dancefloor.

My best WW experiences were in London too, for that matter.
  1:22pm
Cecile:

sugarwolf, that sounds awesome.
  1:22pm
kata:

two Prince rarities in one show ! rejoice !!
  1:22pm
sugarwolf:

Trying to work
  1:23pm
sugarwolf:

Oops my comment cut off .....
  1:24pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

sugarwolf, so hard at work, can't complete comments!
  1:25pm
Mike East:

this playlist page should be purple
  1:25pm
damn son:

yo RIP Dave Brubeck!!!
  1:28pm
Mike East:

seriously? Dave Brubeck? I just got a flyer in the mail yesterday saying he was playing Bergen PAC coming up. wow.
  1:29pm
Cecile:

aw, he got me into jazz. Take 5 of course!
  1:31pm
sugarwolf:

I didn't know Dave Brubeck had the same birthday as me.

Maybe Krampus got him :(
  1:32pm
Caryn:

Aw, RIP Dave Brubeck!

Lovely double Prince dose.

And I can no longer stop myself from sniggering whenever I hear "Bird on a Wire". "Ab Fab" made it funny forever.
  1:36pm
still b/p:

Saw Brubeck and co. only once, in '79 or '80. Really, really nice, although wonderful trombonist work stuck with me more than Dave's piano.
  1:40pm
Cecile:

Anthony Braxton of all people counted Paul Desmond of Brubeck's band as an influence.
  1:41pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Very nice Mr. Owusu!
  1:41pm
pierre:

aaw Dave Brubeck.
  1:43pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Cecile, it makes sense that Braxton dug Brubeck, because a lot of Braxton's compositions where based on equations & chemical components, and Brubeck wrote based on time signatures/math
  1:47pm
Cecile:

nice to know, jan. I didn't know that.
I wish they would play stuff like Owusu makes on our top 40 radio.
  1:50pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Yes, if wishes where horses....
  1:55pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Yes - that Owusu demands further investigation! How am I ever going to finish my Top Ten if I keep learning about new good stuff? And Scott Walker and Big Boi (not together, LOL) are still TK in 2012. Yow.
  1:55pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

For a second there i thought it was the intro to "#1 Song in Heaven" ;)
  1:56pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Duane and all the listeners.
  1:57pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hey, just make it a "top" list and cut it off when you know that you're stretchin' to add anymore...
  1:59pm
Duane:

Hi Richard..thanx for tunin in!
  2:00pm
Jeremy Shatan:

GECKO!! You've made me happy. (I could do that, Jan. I guess I have a masochistic relationship with the discipline of the Top Ten).
  2:02pm
benny:

amen brother we lost a good one today...RIP Dave!
  2:04pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Yeah, well Jeremy, I guess you can do what most top ten listers do, add a hand wringing mia culpa about all the ones you didn't include...
  2:07pm
hamburger:

improvisational music is so coo!
  2:07pm
Caryn:

Which meaning of TK are you using, Jeremy? Just trying to determine what SW & BB are.
  2:12pm
Jeremy Shatan:

TK = to come. Actually Scott's album, Bish Bosch, is out! Big Boi's latest is next Tuesday. Then I'm cutting it off.
  2:17pm
Jeremy Shatan:

This is superb. Must get this album!
  2:18pm
Cecile:

is this what I think it is!!!!!!
yes!!!!!!!!!
  2:18pm
Cecile:

I've been only been waiting forever for this. :D
  2:20pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Hello Duane!
  2:20pm
Duane:

Hey Kitty Kitty! Thanx for droppin by
  2:21pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Dave Brubeck passed one day before his 92nd Birthday!
  2:22pm
still b/p:

Super-fast response today on the playlist years request, and a nice info addition.
Cecile, with your power, could you make many requests for accommodation/improvement in many directions on my behalf?
  2:23pm
Cecile:

sure, what do you need? hahahaha
  2:24pm
Brett:

I love Owusu and Hannibal
  2:27pm
Phillip Owusu:

Thank you Brett
  2:29pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

This is superb!
  2:30pm
still b/p:

Perfect job, time-machine....standard shit.

BTW, your neck of woods and my near-neck both featured in Lonely Planet Top Ten US Destinations for 2013. Pic accompanying Maine entry is a spot I walked a few months ago. (Sent Ken a pic with FMU sticker included in view from top of that mountain in the background.) And I'm guessing you've been at the St. Paul pic spot more than once.

  2:30pm
Cecile:

Heatwave are incredible.
  2:36pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Jeremy time for you to jump in about Gecko Turner!
  2:38pm
Cecile:

sbp, I work just blocks from there, but I haven't been to the jazz festival. Although I've seen some lunchtime shows there.

There are a lot of cool places to visit. In fact, part of our Feb vacation will be a staycation.
  2:39pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Aw - missed it. Come back, Phillip!
  2:42pm
still b/p:

This Emotions track with or without the vocal is like music heard in many mainest-of-mainstream 80s movies.
  2:42pm
Duane:

he's still here Jeremy!
  2:45pm
Cecile:

oh, nas.
you're such a goof.
  2:46pm
steve:

nice remix
  2:49pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Ha!
  2:51pm
Cecile:

anyway, gotta jet. talk to everyone later!
  2:52pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hydrollic Pump!
  2:53pm
robyn:

this is a fun one.
  2:57pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

It's from a great album, sly stone is on some of it...
  3:06pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Oh well, tell Philip to tell Gecko that I may very well be his biggest fan!
