- Hello TSP - !
...I'm home from work & ready for the World - !
  6:38pm ans:

it is after midnight here in the netherlands and it's snowing, these soundtracks are just right for the atmosphere!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Rob Weisberg:

Good evening everyone. Bit of a quirky show tonight as is always the case when I take a whack at a theme show, some old favorites but many things I haven't played before, hope you can stick around...
  6:45pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

I've always wondered: How closely do Seu Jorge's Portuguese lyrics match Bowie's - ?
  6:50pm cityofspheres:

Just tuned in for the first time, and I am cancelling my other activities for the evening in favor of listening to the show. For reals! Also I have recently watched the Israeli film Sangam, and managed to miss that song.
  6:52pm cityofspheres:

Oh wait, my bad, the Israeli movie was a movie ABOUT Israeli people watching the Indian movie Sangam.
  7:01pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

@ cityofspheres:
- Well - that's pretty 'World'...
  7:03pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

- Flamenco is spirited stuff - !...
  7:05pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

...First hour took us a lot of places...
  7:16pm katie:

One can never have too much Tony Gatlif.
  7:17pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

'World' Cinema certainly a Theme w/ a lot of potential - !
...How great is it to hear Groucho! : ) ...
...Erm: Does using 'World' even in quotes make anyone shudder - ??
- I think most Genres are a bit uncomfortable w/ their Labels
...I did have the requisite epiphanal moment working in a CD store (another decade) looking @ the bins & realizing it's *All* 'World' Music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Rob Weisberg:

Thank you Katie for giving it up for Gatlif... by the way I always forget to mention, he's actually of Romani (Gypsy) background himself.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I don't watch movies, but I appreciate the musical selections tonight. I notice these songs don't have any explosions, though. Usually, the popular movies are full of explosions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Rob Weisberg:

It's true, we're short on explosions Ken! Guess I'm too much of a peacenik..
  7:39pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

...So - Harry Shearer, Henry Mancini & Ravi Shankar all walk into a bar together...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

WFMU played this one long before it became a beer commercial.
  7:54pm katie:

AAAAHHHH. just the track we've been waiting for. Not as good as your Hoof and Mouth version, but you'll say I'm biased.
  7:57pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

...& - erm - there's an Explosion - ? ; of Genius.
...peacenik: Any Joe Frank fans - ? If so - remember a fantastic *ironic* rap he did on there being no Statues for Peace Heroes - & how absurd that would be - ??...
- Can't ever seem to get enuff Sitar & Tabla: Sue me - !...
...You always Expand my Horizons & Transport - - ! Appreciated.
  8:01pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Ah - !
...If seeing Thora Birch shake it in my mind's eye I must - then I will...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Rob Weisberg:

Still no explosions, but if it helps, we just had our second jaw harp incident.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Jim Price:

What was that A cappella piece you just played? Female voice and beautiful. Was just in the car and got home and need to know.
  8:16pm Marmalade Kitty:

is that really iggy?
  8:16pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Google:
Joe Frank Is there such a thing as a peace hero?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Rob Weisberg:

Hey Jim, nothing specifically a cappella played recently unless you had an odd phase cancellation experience!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Jim Price:

Darn. I think i got it right. No instruments just lead female voice and lush female backing vocals... and a dude on bass voice similar to doo-wop.
  8:24pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Pardon if I state the obvious: He can of course check the Archive when the show's over
- so then I suppose it's a question of which ones had female singer prominent in last - how long - ?
  8:24pm katie:

High Fidelity.
  8:26pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

This week is Funny (haha) - ! : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Rob Weisberg:

Jim, this is actually the big a cappella moment of the show, right now! But I'll figure out which one you're thinking of later and let you know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Rob Weisberg:

Katie, are YOU correcting MY spelling - ?! But, er, that's right, it's actually High, not hi...
  8:30pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Saw 'Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner)' highlighted on PBS show about American Indian Cinema - praised there as being the Real Thing in terms of being Native Cinema.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Jim Price:

Darn car radios...... took me to another bidirectional, out of bounds, rotary broadcast. Good show Rob.
  8:37pm jack:

hey you fickin deleteeted mee you damm wwitcchess
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I may be mistaken, but Hemant's song seems a lot like "Night Flight To Venus" from The Boney M.
  8:41pm jack:

bony M is cool my friend jack eats sugar lumps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Rob Weisberg:

Good catch Ken, I'm sure you're right
  8:44pm jack:

my friend jack eats sugar lumps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8:46pm JJG:

The song "Piya Too Ab To Aaja" was incredible. How do they get that compressed sound? Reminds me of the soundtrack on early Bond flicks or Leone spaghetti westerns? It's probably a limitation of the tech at the time but it sounds distinct.
  8:47pm jack:

Sugar Maaan is everywwhere ahahahhhhaaaaaahahaahhhhah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Rob Weisberg:

JJG, yes, probably mainly it's about technical limitations although there would also be esthetic choices particular to Bollywood at the time. But in terms of the music, RD Burman was influenced by American and European spy movie music, probably more so than anyone else in Bollywood.
  8:48pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

...& 'kids all dig him in Japan'...trying to Keep it Real for the World Music Show, jack...
  8:56pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

...Reminds me of the book 'This is Your Brain on Music' by Daniel Levitin: He discourses (verb? yeah?) on how the brain/mind processes sonic Equilization cues about (ferinstance) Eras & Environs. Everybody should read it (...rather than me paraphrase crappily...) Love old Studio One Jamaican sound - for example...
Listened to Rutles today!: That captured a sound well (& long before Spinal Tap, incidentally...)
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good show tonight. If only the Oscar movies were as entertaining as your music was for me this evening.
  9:02pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Right Ken - !
  9:14pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

...The 1960's tune dramatically & emphatically alluded to is 'My Friend Jack' by The Smoke
- recorded in a place in The World called England
- considered one of the earliest Psychedelic songs (the earliest were kind of like 'Novelty' songs, before the Genre took over...) & mentions 'sugar lumps' as LSD was put on sugar cubes before blotters & the like. If ya didn't know.
  7:13pm Los Frios:
