Avatar 8:20am Van in DC:

Good morning Doug! Did you see the Library of Congress music news yesterday? You like Ornette Coleman, right...?

"The Shape of Jazz to Come," Ornette Coleman (1959) was honored.

www.loc.gov...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am Doug Schulkind:

Wow! Thanks for that, Van. You know my maternal grandfather once worked at the LoC. I love that list of recordings. Ornette is brilliant and that Cachao record is amazing. Hard to get past "Bacon, Beans and Limousines" on the list!
Avatar 8:28am Van in DC:

I love visiting the LoC on occasion during my daily lunch time trek around the mall area here :)
Avatar 🥁 8:29am duke:

I'm glad to see that the successful marathon has allowed WFMU to upgrade to the latest DJ technology.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33am Doug Schulkind:

See if you can hear the difference in today's tin-can cast today, Duke!
Avatar 8:34am Van in DC:

I wonder if the programs referenced by the LoC article will have any impact on available musical blog items that we all love so much around here? Specifically the federal copyright thingy to pre-1972 recordings?
Avatar 🥁 8:40am bobdc:

Doug, what did your grandfather do there? I'm actually a bit of a metadata geek by trade, and the LoC has been doing cool stuff on that front for 200 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
He was an administrator. He was a linguist by trade. Not sure how that came into play at the Library.
Avatar 8:47am Van in DC:

Knowledge in every form comes into play there Doug! I had an amazing behind the scenes tour given by my drinking buddy Director of Rare Items & Collectibles a few years back :)

ME: "Start with that Moroccan thing. It's killer."

OTHER ME: "It's a little raucous. Maybe begin with something more calming and inviting."

ME: "Who're you kidding?! It'll blow them away. You know they'll love it. Jesus, it's amazing."

Hard to say. My first reaction is that it is a stretch to claim that there are "Kentucky roots" in all the different kinds of music to come out of the state. The music from the mountains of Kentucky are surely identifiable as "Kentucky" music. But to claim the music of Helen Humes and Lionel Hampton as authentically Kentuckian sounds like not much more than a great sounding book proposal.

Doug - My wife and daughter and I were driving through New Hampshire, north of Mt. Washington and saw a bunch of cars on the side of the road. We pulled over and saw people crowded around 2 moose – a mother and her young ‘un. From far away they look big – up close like we got they are huge. We looked, took a few pics and got out of there. So, just be careful of what you wish for, moose-wise.

Valerie Wilmer - As serious as your life. An essential read!
Avatar 🥁 11:23am duke:

I finished Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon recently. It has plenty of references to Funk and Boogaloo as well as a zeppelin named Minnie Ripperton
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

@Trish
I'm sure you're absolutely right. I have "this thing" about not correcting spellings on record jackets unless I know it's a typo. (Even then I sometimes don't.)
Avatar 🥁 11:24am duke:

I second Hugo's recommendation for As serious as Your Life
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:25am Uncle Michael:

I liked Minnie in the Rotary Connection
Avatar 11:25am ndbob:

@duke Telegraph Avenue is high on my reading list
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
I almost put up a link to Val Wilmer's book. "As Serious as Your Life" is still the greatest book on music I've ever read. My Bible.

Here is my reading book for this summer's vacation:

@Hugo: Val Wilmer: YES. Go back to it often.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

Did NOT enjoy TELEGRAPH AVE, however.
Avatar 11:27am ndbob:

Sonata for Jukebox is fantastic - I remember finding and buying it without knowing anything about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

How fine is that we're talking about books! It's usually beer and dogs (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Hugo:

Or cats ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

@JG
Don't say any more about Telegraph Avenue. I gotta read it regardless.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:32am Uncle Michael:

I'm on pace to voice-track the Australia episode as soon as the show ends. Perfect.
Avatar 🥁 11:33am duke:

My cat sent the dog out for more beer.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:33am Uncle Michael:

The Bing bio I'm into is a very dense read. Almost too detailed.
Avatar 🥁 11:34am duke:

@Jeff read Black Music a long time ago. It opened my eyes to a lot of I music I didn't know about.
Avatar 🥁 11:34am Parq:

Let's go for a hat trick and talk about books about dogs drinking beer.

Anybody have any opinions about John Coltrane: His Life and Music by Lewis Porter. I'm thinking about getting it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:37am Jeff Golick:

@duke: no, but the second half of Ratliff's book on Trane is really good.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:38am Jeff Golick:

@UM: the Giddins Bing book?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:38am Alex In Illinois:

Speaking of books, my sister's book about American Red Cross was recently released. In the beginning, it has a chronology section that includes many events, many of them disasters. If I have the time, I would like to see if I can find a song about each of the disasters. I know I heard one about the Johnstownville Flood of 1889 on this show a few years ago.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:38am Uncle Michael:

This Barney Wilen is playing a recording in the background of two girls from Burundi off an old Ocora record. He is sampling in 1969!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

@Duke
I haven't read it, but Lewis Porter is terrific. He provided some excellent commentary in the amazing Coltrane radio documentary "Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone," that I played on my show.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:41am Uncle Michael:

The marimba makes this track for me. So simple but it's the spice.

So for this NCAA thingy going on, the famous 12 over 5 is proving again to be feared. Watch your backs Badgers... it's 12's = 2, 5's = 1 so far...

This singer, Asha Puthli, is the woman who provided the amazing vocals on Ornette Coleman's "Science Fiction."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:45am Uncle Michael:

There's always at least one thing I have to seek out after a GTDS and this week it's Asha Puthli.
Avatar 11:47am Van in DC:
