I heard a band play this (Hocus Pocus) in a bar one time. I was kind of surprised that anyone would cover this tune.
Avatar 12:05am
BadGuyZero:

They probably thought they were covering Gary Hoey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06am
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

When I first heard this song when I was a teenager, I pretty much thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever heard.

I only really know this one (a good one) by Focus - but another FMU DJ played another one recently - & it was good too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11am

Gary U.S. Bonds played Joseph?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11am
Tome:

Hi Therese ! Hi Kiddles ! great start to show too !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13am
Uncle Michael:

Post-Palm Sunday theme?
  12:14am
P-90:

@RR: I think I heard that too, an FMU DJ played something cool, said it was Focus, and I realized that I didn't know any Focus except HP.
Avatar 12:14am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Over @ 'More Than a Few Excting Moments' idea came up of making next Marathon Finale 'Jesus Christ Superstar' - & my brain got going by itself casting from FMU DJ roster
- but on Jason Elbogen's show he said it's already been done too well by some High School he informs of on his profile page thru facebook...

...'Have you forgotten HOW PUT DOWN WE ARE - !'...I still like JCSuperstar!...
Avatar 12:18am
BadGuyZero:

Is this on a wax cylinder?
  12:18am
P-90:

Deep Purple was the core "rock band" section on the original recording of JCS. The orchestral stuff was particularly well combined with the electric instruments, a rare thing.
Avatar 12:19am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Ah: Sounds like that was where that idea came from there...
Avatar 12:20am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - Ian Gillan (sp?) was JC? Ben Vereen as Judas - just in film?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20am

Jefferey Hunter still the best Jesus -- maybe because when I was a kid ,,.,.,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20am

I a situation like that, I'd cover "The Thirty-Nine Blows."

@Rev: Ted Neely and Carl Anderson in the film.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wm. Berger as Judas or Caiphus? Irwin as Pilate? DaveSpazz as SimonZealot? Or not? It's a fun game...
  12:22am
P-90:

Ian Gillan was JC, Murray "One Night in Bangkok" Head was Judas. They actually rushed the film into production and had the movie cast sing over the original album music tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24am
Uncle Michael:

P-90. that's the original rock opera. I'm talking about the film. Ted Neely was JC on film.
Avatar 12:25am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Right - there were theatre Cast albums & Movie albums? A typical thing?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am
Uncle Michael:

he original project was neither stage or screen...it was studio.
Avatar 12:27am
BadGuyZero:

The Shuggie show in Chicago I was hoping to attend [a Wednesday show] is sold out. He's also playing the night before but I don't think I'll be able to make that one. BLERG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27am
Uncle Michael:

I'd love to see him play out.
Avatar 12:28am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ah.
...Another scary example of turning into That Old Guy trying to remember stuff from - 40 YEARS AGO.
  12:30am
P-90:

@RR: Yes, there's usually an "original cast" recording of the first stage production. In a very innovative move, A. LLoyd Webber put together a studio album of the show before it was ever staged. The album was a hit and overcame the resistance at the time to the "controversial" subject (and title!), which made it possible to do the Broadway production.
Avatar 12:33am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Another thing I like - the War of the Worlds rock opera ('78?)...
  12:35am
P-90:

@RR: Wikipedia says '76.
  12:37am
P-90:

Correction: 1978! I was in high school, my friends and I loved the record, it was pretty "proggy."
Avatar 12:38am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'76: Thanx - ! (Hence the question mark...)
- That one I didn't know about then - only more recently...
Avatar 12:44am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mojo Mag had an article on it - it was like the guy's life passion. Proggy & Dramatic maybe - but done w/ some intelligence & class. Narrated by Richard Burton - great!
- & featured John Lodge of Moodys, Phil Lynott, David Essex...H.G. Wells w/ that is the original Alien Invasion story all others devolve from - replete w/ BritEmpire metaphors that are still quite serviceable...Speilberg got it wrong - keep it Victorian & let the Metaphors speak for themselves! George Pal ok in 50's...
Avatar 12:48am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I played it in Thrift Store I work @ for Halloween a lot - & what w/ 9/11 & terrorism & contempo. natural disasters - H.G. Well's imagery ('the rout of Civilization', &tc.) still works pretty well...Flaming Lips are sortof doing Rock Operas - Mars Volta doing Concept Albums?...
Avatar 12:50am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wow - how many tracks like this does Mary Wells have? Why oh why must we only hear three tracks by anyone???...Yes - I know: They're called 'hits'...

Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I first heard Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of the Worlds on the Evan "Funk" Davies show about two years ago and still have a great appreciation for it. So over-the-top with the prog, theatrics, guitar wanking, and even a little discoishness in some of the beats.
  12:51am
P-90:

George Pal's version was brilliant, one of the top 5 Hollywood Science fiction films of the 50's. But with that exception (and Orson's) I agree that the Victorian setting is key. There's supposed to be a film version of Jeff Wayne's most recent touring production of WOTW, with added live in-theater special effects, opening in April.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Wikipedia mentions a new recording, this time with Liam Neeson narrating, planned for last year.

Great Tracks - !
...Listening - but give y'all a break & sleep now. Thanx for company!
  12:56am
P-90:

@Pete: your description is perfect: proggy, guitar-wanking, AND a hint of Disco. Kinda like "Another Brick in the Wall", come to think of it...
Or "Shakedown Street" by you-know-who.

Yes. FMU is big part of their wiki entry. On April 28, 2007, Major Stars was the first concert of New York City's WFMU Free Music Series.[3] Previously, on May 9, 2006, Major Stars had performed live in the WFMU studio.
