Leaving some b-dubs wings for you guys, enjoy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Doug Schulkind:

The hotter hot sauce the better.
Avatar 5:50pm Holly in NC:

Miss you, Doug! Will try & check in if possible.
I'm really interested in the history behind your show today. Should I Wiki or is there a better get-up-to speed summary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Doug Schulkind:

@Holly
Hiya! Here is a good place to learn about Walter Barnes: www.oxfordamerican.org...
Avatar 5:57pm ndbob:

evening Doug and everyone!
Avatar 5:59pm ndbob:

@Doug heard an interview with Preston Lauterbach a few weeks ago about his book
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:02pm Parq:

Ears are here, but I'm not going to be able to hang around and play. Some dark topic tonight!
Avatar 6:03pm Carmichael:

Doug! Can't believe I finally made it live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey ndbob! (What book are you referring to?) Hi Parq and Live Carmichael!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm listener james from westwood:

evening, all! what a nightmare that must have been for all parties, victims as well as rescuers. sounds like the cocoanut grove or station club fires.
Avatar 6:06pm Carmichael:

I may have heard some of this in my Saturday morning cartoons!
Avatar 6:07pm ndbob:

The Chitlin Circuit - referred to in the Oxford American Article - interview was on one of the New Books Network podcasts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Ah so, ndbob!
Avatar 6:11pm glenn:

greetings from toronto, where the whoopee cushion was invented lo these many years ago. torontoist.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Artie:

Loving the tuba!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

The tuba would soon be replaced by the string bass. Walter Barnes' bass player and drummer were the only two from the band to survive. The drummer, Oscar Brown, said that he would give up music forever, and by all (slim) accounts, he did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Whoopee Glenn!
Avatar 6:19pm fleep:

My takeaway: back in whoopie infancy, folks on a budget could still afford the cheap whoopie cushion, although the gentry in Newport and Palm Beach surely used the premium cushions for their fart jokes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Artie:

Flammable ceiling treatments, just like the Station fire in New Jersey. How far we haven't come.
Avatar 6:22pm fleep:

And the one in Rhode Island
Avatar 6:23pm glenn:

ohh. how stunned am i? this is the fire that natchez burning by howlin' wolf is about, right?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Artie:

@fleep: same fire, my bad. the glam metal connection always makes me recall that incorrectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

@Glenn
The very same. Howling Wolf coming up...
Avatar 6:30pm ndbob:

a particularly great show tonight Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Here is an excellent site the covers Barnes, the fire and correct a bunch of mistakes made on Wikipedia and the Mississippi Blues Trail marker and elsewhere:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Baby Doo Caston was the pianist on the previous track. Robert Nighthawk is playing harmonica on this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

April 23 in 1940 was also a Tuesday. Creepy.
Avatar 6:36pm glenn:

to be honest, it's not one of my fave wolf tunes, but i've got a new perspective on it now.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Doug Schulkind:

All these songs get certain details wrong. The time, the number of dead, the state of the nightclub after the fire, etc. Everyone took liberties.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:43pm listener james from westwood:

when it comes to historical facts evolving in song, i like the last line of lloyd alexander's prydain chronicles: "and, in time, only the bards knew the truth of it."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Doug Schulkind:

I think all my extra yakking will make it impossible to fit in the Captain Beefheart track. Truth be told, it is almost entirely unlistenable. You are not missing anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

John Lee has the date WRONG. It was 1940, not 1937. I still love him.
Avatar 6:52pm fleep:

Distortions: Sometimes intentional, for the sake of the rhythm or rhyme, sometimes the results of an oral history that morphs over time. Either way, it's been a great history lesson, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm northguineahills:

Got here for the last 9 minutes!
Avatar 6:53pm glenn:

well, john lee's always a little bit behind the beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

I was all prepared to unleash some monstrous distortions upon ye. Just not in the cards tonight.

HELLO NGH. You betta go back and slurp up this archive. Go ahead and tell 'em why people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
The beat is a little bit overrated.

@glenn
Glad your Toronto trains didn't get blowed up!
Avatar 6:54pm ndbob:

indeed Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

I fuckin hate websites that automatically play music when you open them. Really fuckin hate them.
Avatar 6:57pm glenn:

yeah, me too, but the timing is very weird, considering the rcmp knew about these guys for months and the government was supposed to be debating some anti terrorism law in the house of commons yesterday.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm listener james from westwood:

friends of mine set up a site for their upcoming wedding w/ autoplaying music. i adblocked it back to the stone age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Doug Schulkind:

OK, this song kinda sucks. Just think about the amazingly grating distortion you could be hearing instead. Sigh.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm listener james from westwood:

glenn, the expression "never waste a good crisis" comes to mind on that timing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm northguineahills:

slurp!
Avatar 7:00pm glenn:

yep. definitely a right wing characteristic.
Avatar 7:00pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm northguineahills:

argghhh, hate autoply!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:02pm listener james from westwood:

many thanks, doug!
Avatar 8:24am Van in DC:

By catching up NOW, I save myself from having to catch up YEARS from now.

Oh, wait. I'll probably WANT to re-catch-catch up again years from now!

Let's go before we go again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Just don't re-re-catch-catch up. You could pull a muscle.
