(pockets check from Big Cereal)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Charlie:

you keep cereal in your pockets?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am pacific standard simon:

Charlie is his name, nuttin' is his game.
Avatar 11:55am Michael:

Mr. Charlie! Fellow listeners! Happy Thursday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Charlie:

greets, artie, james, simon, & michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm G:

aha, head start here :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm pacific standard simon:

Shouldn't that be "pockets Chex from Big Cereal"?
Avatar 12:01pm Carmichael:

Good morning Charlie, whenever that was. My cereal is normally in a cabinet. A locked cabinet. A booby-trapped, locked cabinet. With an automatic 911 connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Ike:

( 1 )? ( 1 )? ( 1)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Charlie:

Hello G, Carmichael, Ike --

Avatar 12:03pm ndbob:

morning Charlie and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

oh, very good, simon. very good indeed.
ike, that looks like 3 teapots in a row.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

howdy all and happy thursday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Charlie:

Howdy Bob!
Fill your pockets with party mix and join the throng.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm pacific standard simon:

Carmichael the cereal killer!
  12:06pm Tower:

Finally able to listen again today. Hello to everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Ike:

Make granola for cereal! 4 cups oats, half a cup of honey, half a cup of syrup (maple preferred), pinch of salt, 1/4 cup water. Simmer liquids & salt, coat & stir oats, then bake oats in oven at 375ish F for 15-25 min., shuffle often to make sure they don't burn. Easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Charlie:

Hi Tower!
Fill your pockets with granola and join the gang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Brian in UK:

Hello Charlie & listeners in.

How much time do you folks have for breakfast in the morning?

@ndbob how's the calf?
Avatar 12:09pm ndbob:

Heya Tower Todd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Ike:

Optional: Add shredded coconut and/or nuts. Also optional: Pinch of vanilla extract in the liquids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Brian in UK:

@simon how're you doing? Between a rock and a harder place?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Charlie:

Nuts, yes.
and coconut.
Hi Brian UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm listener james from westwood:

plenty of time for breakfast! in fact i eat 2, a berry smoothie after the gym and then a bowl of oatmeal later on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Charlie:

big breakfast, every day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Joe Maneri slays me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Brian in UK:

What is this GYM that you speak of james?
Avatar 12:13pm ndbob:

@Brian doing well as far as I know... the buffalo are moved to the main pasture Memorial Day weekend usually - so should be able to see it then
Avatar 12:14pm Carmichael:

It's the most important meal of the day. That's why it's booby-trapped.
Avatar 12:14pm ndbob:

eggs for breakfast for me - every day
Avatar 12:15pm Michael:

Breakfast = coffee, coffee and some more coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Charlie:

Hi Doug --
Joe Maneri -- part of this complete breakfast!
Avatar 12:16pm Carmichael:

Aah, the Richie Havens tribute. Alarm Clock was the best album ever. Had it on my wall as a kid.
  12:16pm ?:

Eat breakfast like a king,
lunch like a prince and
dinner like a pauper
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Doug Schulkind:

I prefer to eat my Maneri, shells and all. Extra fiber!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm pacific standard simon:

@Brian - I fear that I am here with you more in spirit than in fact, since I'm unpacking with She Who Must Be Obeyed (and WFMU annoys her).
Avatar 12:23pm glenn:

not enough people read h. rider haggard these days.
Avatar 12:23pm ndbob:

@glenn I actually was thinking about doing that the other day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm pacific standard simon:

Copyright-free on my Kindle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm listener james from westwood:

my mom was a huge fan of haggard. (though not a huge, haggard fan.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Brian in UK:

@simon (stage whisper) good luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Brian in UK:

@glenn is thst SHE who must be obeyed?
Avatar 12:25pm duke:

I'm feeling kind of haggard today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Brian in UK:

What does the H mean?
Avatar 12:26pm Carmichael:

Life choices can be profound, Simon. I trust you'll soon make yours. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Brian in UK:

@glenn how many is enough?
Avatar 12:28pm glenn:

henry, i think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Charlie:

Merle, I'm feeling kinda haggard today.
Hi Duke, Glenn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Jeff Golick from Destination Out turned me onto the avant jazz group that plays Merle Haggard tunes: Bryan & the Haggards hotcuprecords.com...
Avatar 12:29pm Carmichael:

Ya know, I just noticed the guy in the top photo, behind the truck. He's either performing a dance for the comet Kahoutek, or paying tribute to Ed Grimley.
Avatar 12:30pm glenn:

she is a pretty great book, in my opinion. i've also read king solomon's mines, and i think those are the only two that are readily available.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Charlie:

sounds interesting Doug!
that does look like an Ed Grimley pose, Carm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Brian in UK:

@Doug bet he gets called Byron.
Avatar 12:31pm Carmichael:

Errol Flynn was often called Earl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm pacific standard simon:

ebooks.adelaide.edu.au...
Avatar 12:34pm ndbob:

@Glenn it looks like project Gutenberg has a large selection of Haggard's writings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Charlie:

His real name was Mister Earl.
  12:36pm jan:

Lovin the Okapi- I had my heart broken when I didn't win a copy during the marathon pledge. I guess I could download it, but I'm old school and want a record to hold in hand. Great show as always.
Avatar 12:36pm glenn:

hmmm. my g.f., who works at random house says she could only find those two in print, although that may have meant the books they publish.
Avatar 12:37pm ndbob:

they are public domain tho so they can be downloaded for free
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Charlie:

Hi Jan, oh well, I guess that Okapi track is for you, then!
Avatar 12:40pm glenn:

i'm a luddite when it comes to books. i want to read a book.
Avatar 12:41pm Carmichael:

The We Five? Wow, Charlie, you gots some good tastes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Brian in UK:

Did We Five have John Stewarts brother Michael in it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm G:

The Vinicius tune is "Como é Duro Trabalhar" -- How Hard It Is To Work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Brian in UK:

@glenn if you are a Luddite do you want to smash the presses?
Avatar 12:47pm ndbob:

@Brian Yep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm G:

I'm a real luddite. I refuse to learn to read. And if I did, I would only read scrolls :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Brian in UK:

That being said glenn I know my library card number by heart (whatever that means) but not my credit card.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Charlie:

G -- thanks for the traduirtion!
I like books.
I'd be a luddite, but what about all this equipment?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Brian in UK:

@G Papyrus Boy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm G:

In the 1600s many aristocratic and traditional-minded writers in Europe circulated their work in manuscript only, among friends. Print was totally downmarket and bourgeois. Often someone else (a relative etc.) would eventually publish against their wishes, or after they died (when family did that, it was usually for money after the breadwinner was gone)
Avatar 12:50pm glenn:

ooooh. i am being hoist upon my luddite petard. damn you brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm G:

I was joking about being a luidite. :-) Change keeps happening, and Kuhn applies here -- some people never adapt to new stuff, but over time they die off and adapters of new stuff are all that's left...
  12:54pm Tower:

Do you mean my sons won't play my 8 tracks after I'm gone?
  12:56pm Tower:

I guess that goes for my 78's also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

love this cut. "i want a rising sound!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm G:

@Tower: Everything old enough becomes a boutiquey hobby among a few of us (in music: vinyl, cassette, 8 track, etc -- CDs in a few years!!!). I'm not against that, but 8 track will never be a mass thing again, unless a bunch of other higher quality sound technologies die and it happens to be left as the least bad workable thing -- unlikely scenario...
Avatar 12:57pm glenn:

i'm not really a luddite. i love most technology. i just think e- readers are a scam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm pacific standard simon:

Back again. I missed We Five? Oh well, gonna con Uncle Michael into playing "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" when he gets back.

I found a Magnavox one-piece VCR monitor on the street, which lends the proper atmosphere when watching old thrift store tapes of B/W movies.
  1:04pm trs:

Hey @glenn Does 'e-reader' always imply a piece of hardware to you ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm G:

@glenn: i agree that e readers have a severe problem in that the most sellers of such equipment currently write the software so they can fuck with your content or remove it without notice or an ability to do anything about it, under the stupid EULA they make you tick-box. would they dare try to come to your house and take back a book they sold you?

that's my main issue with e readers currently, and i bet some provider will come along and feature not doing that as a selling point, forcing those who do it to stop, to stem the bleeding from lost business...
Avatar 1:06pm glenn:

trs, well kinda, yeah. why?
  1:10pm trish:

E-reader is a piece of software to me. I can use it to read my books on any damn device I choose. Kinda confusing to talk 'ereader' with that discrepancy.

Hardware-saddled tech seems like planned obsolescence outta the gate, whether there's a monopoly structure written in there or not.
Avatar 1:10pm ndbob:

The good thing about e-readers is that vast amounts of material aren't available in other formats - or are much cheaper in electronic form
Avatar 1:11pm glenn:

and i can read a 10$ book in my boat and not care if it falls into the lake.
Avatar 1:12pm duke:

@G they can't fuck with you if you remove the DRM.

To the FBI monitoring WFMU, I would never do that or anything else illegal ever. I promise.
Avatar 1:12pm glenn:

or forget it on the streetcar and not care.
Avatar 1:13pm ndbob:

right Glenn - e readers don't replace books - they are supplementary and complementary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm listener james from westwood:

i for-got it on the streetcar
i for-got it on the streetcar
i for-got it on the streetcar
i for-got it on the streetcar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Brian in UK:

Calling Ray Bradbury. Any ideas for a follow up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Brian in UK:

@james why are your toilets called the can?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm listener james from westwood:

gotta be a descriptive shorthand. what i want to know is how the room came to be called the john.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Brian in UK:

Well we have a term for the old chap over here called the John Thomas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm pacific standard simon:

Having just moved several tons of books over 1000 miles, I vote for selective electronic archiving of personal libraries.
Avatar 1:18pm Carmichael:

Because of the inventor's name, John W. Crapper.
Avatar 1:19pm duke:

This might be considered a follow up to Fahrenheit 451 www.gnu.org...
Avatar 1:19pm Carmichael:

In Ireland, we call the bathroom the Jacks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Charlie:

Hey Trish! When did you get here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Charlie:

We eat books for breakfast here on Busy Doing Nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm pacific standard simon:

Pulp paper flakes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Brian in UK:

@duke got this image of pirates reading books on the poopdeck.
Avatar 1:23pm Carmichael:

Brian, listen to the Pythons' Penis Song. You'll hear every possible euphemism in about 45 seconds.
Avatar 1:23pm ndbob:

@Charlie well I do have many books with bits of breakfast food on them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Brian in UK:

@Carmichael glad his name was not Arbuthnot Blenkinsopp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm pacific standard simon:

I'm still finding books with bits of tobacco in them, and I quit smoking 10 years ago.
Avatar 1:28pm glenn:

oh yeah, there's another thing - can you hide a file in a hollowed out e-reader? i think not, all my incarcerated friends.
  1:28pm trish:

Hi Charlie, around half past-ish ? My ears are in competition with my stomach at this hr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Brian in UK:

@Carmichael he does miss out 'Old Chap' but hey.
Avatar 1:29pm fleep:

Late arrival checks playlist, sees another show to suck down from the archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Brian in UK:

'Theres slight gingering at the top of the book'. You never get gingering on an ereader. Just saying.
Avatar 1:34pm fleep:

Dick & Dee Dee suffer so.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Brian in UK:

Have to say Ginger is one of my favourite words. Multiple meanings.

Paperbacks actually spared my parents' TV during that quake. A shelf full of them fell from above the TV onto the floor in front of it, thereby cushioning its fall once it eventually wriggled its way out of its housing.
