A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Loving the bird talk, Trouble!

I get that "I hate birds" comment all the time, by the way . . . to which I always like to appose one of my favorite provocations, from a fellow ecocritic: "hating nature may be more ethical than loving it."

Anyways, here I am in England, starting all over again with the local birds. Lots of robins and (very articulate) blackbirds!

Isn't ironic how those refuges are constructed around the car, how we disturb the birds least by staying *in* our cars? The upstate Montezuma Wildlife Refuge works that way, too.

Of course, we'd disturb the birds the least by not visiting their refuges at all, but then, without awareness and interest, and without hunters, the refuges probably wouldn't exist, so . . . it's complicated!

Montezuma is also well worth a visit, btw. Saw huge flocks of snow geese there earlier this spring, when I was visiting.

Thanks for the great tunes, as always. & hello from across the Atlantic.

Oh, by the way, one reason birding-land tends to be populated with retirees is that the best birding, during migration season, happens when working folks are busiest -- and if you are into it, you tend to stay out for hours. It's hard to go in once you've started down the warbler path. (Grad school was my alibi.) Those birds don't punch a 9 to 5 clock.

Trouble, have you ever been to Point Pelie, Ontario? It's the isthmus that juts into Lake Erie. That's a fantastic place for checking out birds.

I could use some help naming a couple of my chickens. I've tried for years to raise Plymouth Barred Rocks but they always seem to get killed by the other chickens. They just didn't defend themselves in the day to day hen pecking. Now I have two beautiful Plymouths that are old and large enough that they aren't gonna take any shit from any of the other birds. But they are still unnamed. I am thinking some kind of jail theme since they are black and white striped. If I had a rooster it would be Johnny Cash. Any girl/jail names come to mind?

Monsanto is being sued in Kansas because their wheat is showing up in places it hasn't been planted. Treating GM crops like they are a product and not biology won't work. Seeds spread no matter what, insects change; evolution may not be smarter than technology but it's a hell of a lot more relentless. I'll get off my soapbox and go back to listening.
