Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Just raced back home for the big opening! I wouldn't wanta miss one beautiful second... of Nothing!
Avatar 12:01pm Carmichael:

Me too, Doug. I LOVE Nothing! Hiya Charlie!
Avatar 12:03pm duke:

Nothing doing.
Avatar 12:03pm northguineahills:

Simple yet effective geographical collage. As someone who spent two decades in FL, I love old pics of Florida.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Charlie:

Good Day! Alla youse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Charlie:

No thing doing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm holland oats:

charlie/drumma/peoples - good rainy day to yas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Gary:

Howdy! Very cherry Cherry track.
Avatar 12:07pm northguineahills:

Just when I thought I've heard everything from Don Cherry, someone plays something I haven't heard.
  12:07pm gary mitchell:

far out fifth!
Avatar 12:09pm Carmichael:

5th Dimension were a real swingin' outfit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Charlie:

written by Brazilian songwriter Johnny Alf, and used in the musical "Joy," which starred Oscar Brown Jr
Avatar 12:13pm fleep:

So, 5th Dimension sounding not like 5th Dimension, followed by Beach Boys not sounding like Beach Boys. Time for a quick swim to Stockholm.
Avatar 12:14pm northguineahills:

Oh my gawd, there are stars everywhere! I actually like this REM. Then again, I'm one of the few people that like REM into the 90s.

The Fifth Dimension track sounded like the Free Design.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Charlie:

that sums it up, fleep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Charlie:

And a belated individual and collective greeting to:
Bob, James, (but not Bob James), Michael, Doug, Carmichael, Duke, NGH, H. Oats, Gary, and Fleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Charlie:

Scott Williams' and Chris Stubbs' ole band
Avatar 12:17pm duke:

Just read your e-mail. This is the last show for a while?! Waaaaah! How are we going to do nothing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
On Joe McGasko's maiden Thursday A.M. voyage on the Mothership this morning, he segued the Free Design into the Fifth Dimension!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Gary:

Thanks for the Ryan Hardy freebie links
  12:22pm gary mitchell:

Duke, two beers and an archived show sometimes works for me.
  12:23pm trish:

@Doug

Not a fill in and a summer schedule change? Hey, great.
Avatar 12:23pm northguineahills:

@Doug, I was there, but not quite "there". Insomnia kept me from being fully conscious until about 11ish. Funny, as I commented to Joe it was a different experience listening to him awake and sober (definitely sober, not necessarily awake).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm SeanG:

Hey Charlie, nice tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Doug Schulkind:

@trish
Yah yah, Joe McGasko's new air slot on WFMU is Thursdays, 9-noon. Be speaking of fill-ins, Joe will be filling in for ME on the stream on July 19!
Avatar 12:26pm northguineahills:

26 minutes in, and this episode has already been faved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Charlie:

Hiya SeanG! Hi Trish!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Charlie:

Duke -- next week will be the last show for a while. More on that later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
Pretty good! Your average is typically 36.75 minutes. (A friend at the NSA gave me your stats.)
  12:29pm trish:

@Doug @Charlie
Sliding into the summer season.
Heya
Avatar 12:29pm fleep:

@ngh You want not-quite-thereness? Try starting the show at 6 am. Even the cat thought I was nuts. And btw, totally pulling for you on the interviews.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Brian in UK:

Hello Charlie. Credits to AA Milne.
Avatar 12:31pm Parq:

Half an hour into the show and I've already starred two songs. Par for the course for Charlie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Brian in UK:

Is this from Monica's Premium?
Avatar 12:33pm northguineahills:

Thanks fleep, I have yet another one via phone in two hours. I guess good things happen in threes. I've been randomly up at 5ish-6ish in the morning in past, and zoned out to WFMU w/ my headphones quite a few times....
Avatar 12:34pm Michael:

I think it was on one of Charlie's premiums before it was on Monica's. If I'm not mistaken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Charlie:

Chica & the Folder did it first ;)
Avatar 12:35pm northguineahills:

One of my favorite Magnetic Fields albums.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Charlie:

Howday, Brian and Parq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Brian in UK:

Cool Michael & on the Monika label. Brian Eno song?
Avatar 12:37pm northguineahills:

Yep, that was an Eno cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Brian in UK:

@ngh have you heard Mr Merritt's The Sixths 'Hyacinths & Thistles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Charlie:

"I've got a dream that's a pippin"
  12:44pm gary mitchell:

Hal David's older brother wrote this
Avatar 12:45pm northguineahills:

@Brian: That's the one Sixth's album I lack, but do love all of the album titles of the Sixths (ie: Wasps Nests), so much fun to say!
Avatar 12:46pm ndbob:

good one Charlie!
  12:47pm gary mitchell:

agreed bob
Avatar 12:47pm ndbob:

wow Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Brian in UK:

Would highly recommend it. The Bob Mould track is priceless.
Avatar 12:58pm northguineahills:

Ok, how did I miss The Art of Walking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Brian in UK:

Is there a better soundtrack that is not original material than Rockers?
Avatar 1:01pm northguineahills:

I believe I have Rockers on VHS, but I lack the soundtrack.
  1:02pm frenchee:

AW CHAZ, you're playing the greats!
  1:06pm gary mitchell:

like this one, my brutha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Charlie:

Heya, Frenchee -- I always play the hits when you're around :)
Avatar 1:07pm Lewis:

haven't herd Kahimi Karie since Ken played her many years ago...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Great Jorge cover, bro!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Charlie:

Jorge Ben cover here, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Done here, Ben that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Uncle Michael:

I've had the show on since the beginning and it's just been *ridiculously* good.
Avatar 1:13pm People Like Us:

Lovely show Charlie :)
  1:14pm frenchee:

yes, what Uncle Michael said. Hey is Tom Phonic related to Todd-o?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm listener james from westwood:

hear hear, UM and vicki. wonderful stuff.
  1:15pm wombboy:

Tinned Pineapple and Asparagus soup.
  1:18pm jan:

Great show today!
  1:19pm frenchee:

<sniff>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Charlie:

Hello, Vicki, Peter (that is you eating pineapple and asparagus, right?), and Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Charlie:

Wings cover here.
Avatar 1:25pm northguineahills:

Woah, that sounded like Stereolab redux.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Charlie:

yeah, they're like a slightly folkier stereolab.
  1:38pm wombboy:

Yup. Detoxing.
Avatar 1:39pm Carmichael:

Of course this is Tom Waits.
  1:39pm frenchee:

haahaha
just hear4ing Tom W. reminds me of Tom Scharpling's rant about him on the latest "Best Show."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

Tom Waits' naked baby pictures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Rich in Washington:

I love Nighthawks...
Probably Tom's best album, in my opinion...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Every single album has bettered its predecessor, in my opinion. He's light years beyond Nighthawks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Uncle Michael:

Oh man...this is mah groove.
  1:42pm wombboy:

hit after hit after hit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Rich in Washington:

Post-Asylum Waits is a whole 'nuther cat altogether.
Avatar 1:43pm Parq:

I get the people who dislike Waits -- I just don't agree with them. It comes down to their not finding his persona convincing, while I do. Maybe it's just that I dig it so much that I cast a blind eye on the indications that it's an act. If so, that's my prerogative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Uncle Michael:

I think Swordfish was a logical progression from Heart Attack. I don't think the label made the difference.
  1:45pm frenchee:

Agreed, Parq, but still, Tom S. doing Tom W. was hilarious
Avatar 1:47pm Carmichael:

Let's just say Tom Waits *stays in character*. I like his shtick.
  1:47pm trish:

I'd argue that every performer has a persona, if not every damn person that opens their mouth. Most aren't all that distinct.

Tom's distinctiveness led to damages when he was ripped off by a commercial copy cat.
Avatar 1:47pm Michael:

It doesn't get much love but I've always liked Frank's Wild Years very much.
  1:47pm pseu:

that'd be Jenny Agutter singing I Start Counting. What a creepy film...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

I don't think there's a clear delineation between person and persona with Waits. It's clearly show biz...and on stage he's inhabiting characters. I have no problem with that. David Bowie wasn't Ziggy Stardust either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

heh, the last thing i;ll hold against a performer is that what he or she does on stage is all an act. buy the ticket, take the ride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

Exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm SeanG:

gotta get behind the mule
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

Even a polished, controlled, idealized representation of one's imagined self is all an act. Joni Mitchell is an act. Jackson Browne is an act.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm listener james from westwood:

watch where you step!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Charlie:

didn't even know there was a film, pseu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm ⓘⓚⓔ:

Frenchee, I'll check that out in the archives. Rants about Tom Waits, the Dead, etc. are always the best part of any Scharpling show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm listener james from westwood:

this "little bird" cut is weirdly suited to the last touches i'm putting on a massive editing job. like the credits are rolling on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Charlie, I have been using that "1951: Sumatran Ladies..." disc for talking over for years, too. Either I have been drafting off your auto-fill, or you mine. Either way, what a relief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm KevinfromBayRidge:

How's our Man from the North Country, Charlie? Loving the pop-up! FYI, Anyone who riffs on Hopper for his album cover is alright with me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Gary:

Stepped away and missed the Kahimi Karie. :(
Huge fan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Uncle Michael:

The less auto-fill assists me, the better I'm doing. ;)
  1:54pm trish:

Mitchell put her act on a level of authenticity above Dylan's in a radio interview this week.

Milli Vanilli or whatever the hell their name was crossed the line for me.
A lotta auto tune does, too.
  1:54pm pseu:

Chaz, I saw it streaming on Netflix -- also, the whole darn thing is on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EzmiHa0m9Y
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm KevinfromBayRidge:

@IKE, yeah, loved when TS decimated Zappa years ago.
  1:56pm Laura L:

Listening while busy--thanks, Charlie--look forward to next week, though it means parting's sweet sorrow until the grown-up stuff's done and you can return to busy-ness. Cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Uncle Michael:

I hope you're back soon Charlie. You do chicken right.
Avatar 1:56pm ndbob:

excellent show Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

This is like Ben Folds meets Phish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Ike:

Kevin, he still goes back to that Zappa well sometimes, and it's almost always hilarious.

Good show Charlie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Charlie:

1) Hey, are there two Garys here now?
2)This is an act.
3) Thanks, everyone, and see you next time.
4) Matt's up next: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm listener james from westwood:

do be well, chaz. fine fine superfine show today.
Avatar 1:59pm Carmichael:

I thought this was Tiny Tim.
Avatar 1:59pm Michael:

Thanks charlie. Until next week -
  2:01pm trish:

Great listening all around.
