"Understanding Marx"! Man, does hearing this take me back. Seems like another lifetime when Irwin first started playing this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
Caryn:

The point in the Woodstock movie I kinda love is, how after about 2 hours of people talking in a kind of mainstream way, Arlo Guthrie takes the stage and sounds like the most stereotypical hippie ever thought up by a Hollywood screenwriter. He literally goes, "I was just rapping with the fuzz, can you dig it?"
Avatar 5:00pm

...drop!: time for Brezhnev's funky breakdance...

By the way, I *still* don't know what the third line in the chorus is, except that it seems to be about Freud and Skinner.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- but - yerknow - a PostModernist of my era would say something relativistic like that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm

@RRN63: true, but I guess the song is saying "if you want to get your mind in order, forget all this trendy psychoanalysis bull and just read Marx and Lenin!"

Caryn @4:57 - that too of course... but my experience from growing up with political punks and angry preachy types is that the ones who toss around language like the Woodstock guy are always the first to do a full 180
Avatar 5:08pm

I've been around the WFMU-niverse long enough that "Un'ng Marx" just seems to want to be paired with "Ronald Racist Rambo [something] Baby-Killer Reagan".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Caryn:

So we have the "everywhere" song, then the "nowhere" song... I almost feel Irwin chose this pair just because of the word pairing. I wonder if there's more to come?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
Caryn:

@steve: yeah, I kinda see him working for some huge insurance company.

Okay, maybe the DJ ultimately bought in to The Man's pig agenda, but either way, it's not "selling out" -- it's "buying in".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm

@Droll: yeah, that's the oft forgotten 4th part of Timothy Leary's turn of phrase: "turn on, tune in, drop out, buy in".

About those older archives, should you be inclined to follow Irwin's trail of breadcrumbs to them - they're in RealAudio format, which is kind of problematic right there, and are served by a piece of server software which is an archived binary running (sort of) in a compatibility mode, and... well, the whole thing is made up of chewing gum and baling wire.

So if you have odd difficulties listening to them, know that we're aware that the current setup is far from optimal. We're beginning a massive project to transcode all those Real files to a format which is actually still widely supported, and serve them from something which actually works. But it'll take some time. There's a lot of work to do.
