Avatar 12:02pm Cecile:

Hello, Joe and fellow Belockians!

Big HI to the Blind Shake!!

And RIP Lou.
Avatar 12:04pm Joe B:

Hi everybody! thanks for tuning in. THE BLIND SHAKE are here! soundcheckig now. live set should be coming up not too long
Avatar 12:06pm Cecile:

they had a funny article in the local paper about how much more popular they are in other cities than in Mpls.
Avatar 12:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...if there'd been no VelvetUnderground - would we even recognize ourselves - ?!
Avatar 12:07pm Cecile:

I wish they could play around here more, but that to me says a lot about the high quality of their music.
Avatar 12:07pm Cecile:

Replacements, Soul Asylum and Huskers had to go on the road forever before they became heroes here.

Hey, it's 11th Lou Day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm common:

Rev. Rabbit: I would not recognize myself.
Avatar 12:09pm Cecile:

I came to them later in life, but between them and Beefheart, there would be no alternative as we know it, for better or worse.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I don't remember hearing this when I was in the FFA (1977-1980). The album Ecstasy came out in 2000, per my Google search, so that explains that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm tim from champaign:

Wow, really looking forward to the Blind Shake. They tore it up last year.

I knew Joe would have a unique and cool tribute to Mr. Lou. Keep it coming, Joe!
Avatar 12:11pm Cecile:

Ken, the deal in our neighbhood was 4-H
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Guido (Cologne):

... makes me remind that Lou and Metallica performed Lulu Live in a Cologne TV-studio on 2011-11-11, kind of speial holy-holy-day in Cologne ... whatever that means.
Avatar 12:15pm Cecile:

Joe, you got "Kill Your Sons?"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Parq:

@ RevRabbit 12:06: I sure wouldn't. Can't say exactly how different I'd be, but pretty damn different. So would New York be, or at least the parts of it that I came to be a part of. When you think about all the other things that have influenced us, which would have been non-existent or fundamentally different if there had been no Lou -- well, whew.
Avatar 12:18pm still b/p:

My only live Lou show was fairly flat -- '76 or '77, I think. Him in a spotlight, band in just the dim spill for the duration. No effort to be engaged with the audience on any channel, and not taken to any apparent place by his own material...perhaps his standard brand of cool.
  12:19pm laura spike:

When you think about it, really, whose life *wasn't* saved by rock and roll?
Avatar 12:19pm InBrkly:

It is a cold war movie.
Avatar 12:20pm Cecile:

Oh, it's a movie with Baryshikov and Gregory Hines where Baryshnikov tries to escate from Russia. And it had a crappy Lionel Ritchie song as its centerpiece.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Cecile - Yes, I was in 4-H from third to eighth grade. Our county even had a 4-H camp during the summer. The canoeing was the funnest part.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm tim from champaign:

White Nights - A mid 80s feel good Russia is bad movie about overcoming differences through ballet dancing and Lionel Richie's "Say You Say Me".
Avatar 12:22pm Cecile:

Laura, I talked to the minutemen once, and misquoted the line "punk rock changed my life" as "punk rock changed my life". d boon said "It was changed, not saved. We would have gone along, it just would have been different."
Avatar 12:23pm Cecile:

The Velvet Underground changed my life. I think the Kinks, Sweet and Skyhooks saved it.
Avatar 12:24pm Cecile:

but THE BLIND SHAKE RULES RIGHT THIS MINUTE
Avatar 12:26pm Cecile:

Ken, I was in it for about 5 minutes, but my sister really did well in it - winning prizes for weird baked goods she'd make up on the fly.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm tim from champaign:

These guys are tearing it up!
  12:31pm laura spike:

Yeah, the Blind Shake are saving my life right now, otherwise I'd be dying of boredom.
Avatar 12:33pm Cecile:

you know it, laura.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Guido (Cologne):

APPLAUSE !!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar 12:34pm Cecile:

yeah. WOW.
  12:35pm benny:

cant wait to see the blind shake tomorrow in phila!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm tim from champaign:

@cecile and ken - my wife's youngest brother got really involved in 4-H when the family moved from the Detroit burbs to the sticks of West Michigan. Now he's in his mid 20s working quite successfully in agriculture.
Avatar 12:36pm Cecile:

oh, dere's dat accent!
Avatar 12:36pm Cecile:

tim, people forget what a farming state MI is.
Avatar 12:36pm Cecile:

what's their favorite local beer?
Avatar 12:38pm InBrkly:

What is thee oh sees connection? I love their album art.
Avatar 12:39pm Cecile:

any plans to do another record with Michael Yonkers?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm tim from champaign:

Can the Blind Shake throw down a little more?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@tim - Good deal. Keeps kids out of trouble and closer to nature. Other practical things, too. Like how to use hand tools and how small engines work.
Avatar 12:43pm Cecile:

oh, yah. love it.
Avatar 12:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- as always - I wonder why WFMU ~ Joe bring the great contemporary Rawk like this - & like the whole rest of the world is so dull & bad. Wtf ?!?
Avatar 12:44pm Cecile:

oh nice! Can't wait to hear the John Reis surf record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Mike East:

@RevRabbit - its easier for most people to be boring.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Blind Shake has a good sound. Good luck on their upcoming shows.
Avatar 12:47pm Cecile:

hahahahaah secret plans!
Avatar 12:47pm Cecile:

that is very true.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm tim from champaign:

@ken - yeah, or driving big ass combines.
Avatar 12:48pm Cecile:

they are right. The amount of pain that guy endures on a daily basis would kill anyone else.
Avatar 12:48pm InBrkly:

That sucks. I have a back injury. Just took my daily hydrocodone/cyclobenziprine. Still hurts.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:51pm tim from champaign:

Does the drummer in a punctual band have great timing?
Avatar 12:51pm Cecile:

thanks, Blind Shake!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm tim from champaign:

Great set and fun interview. Thanks Joe and Blind Shake!
Avatar 12:55pm Cecile:

Tim, would a supergroup consisting of the group that did "bag lady (I wonder)" and this band be the EBN OZN OBN IIIs?
Avatar 12:57pm Joe B:

cecile sorry didnt see the local beer question!
Avatar 12:58pm Cecile:

that's fine, Joe!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:01pm tim from champaign:

@cecile - maaaaaaaaaannnnn........
hahahaha
Avatar 1:08pm Cecile:

I gotta get this album. It is rock solid.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Stevel:

You mean to tell me I ate lunch with my mom instead of hearing the Blind Shake? I am a bad person.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Mike Sin:

Hey! Hot show today, Joe!
  1:14pm gabee:

I was in Texas last month and I blame them for everything.
Avatar 1:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Okay: I turns Five-Oh on Sunday

...& explain that Jack Ruby thing, is all I'm saying...
Avatar 1:47pm Joe B:

Avatar 1:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I was born less than a day before Lennon told the Queen to 'Rattle Her Jewelry' - not that I read anything into that ; )...
Avatar 1:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

  2:16pm Sue:

Go Joe
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:16pm tim from champaign:

Oh yeah, this 45 VU box is really cool. I love the radio spots for the 3rd album.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Howdy Joe et al. So sad hearing this. NY lost a big one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Scharpling & Maron talked about how easy it is for people with older siblings, who could just walk across the hall and be like "Hey, a Velvet Underground record!" Exactly how it worked for me when I was 12.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Mike Sin:

"I Can't Stand It" = the VU song with the best sense of humor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm SeanG:

do it again!
  2:24pm Sue:

Best album, even though it's not an album !!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:24pm tim from champaign:

I give the VU and Another View outtakes records equal value as the 4 proper albums. The live records too. There's just so much great music to absorb from the Velvets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm common:

yep!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Mike Sin:

re: VU "Loaded" -- Has it ever been pointed out ust who played drums on specific tracks? Billy Yule and Adrian Barber (of all people!) are listed as playing on the sessions but not the specific tracks, correct?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Matt F:

Tim- yes! I think the outtakes records and the live records are the best showcase of the VU as a killer rock & roll band.
Avatar 2:31pm RSB:

Transformer Lou - Right On
Avatar 2:31pm KP:

Pledge! JB needs we!
Avatar 2:32pm MissV:

They are the 89%
Avatar 2:32pm InBrkly:

I still haven't heard the VU "lost" acetate that was discovered a couple of years ago...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:33pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Saw Lou during the Transformer era at SUNY Albany. Great show but the man was truly wasted.
Avatar 2:33pm InBrkly:

oh I just conveniently found it on WFMU haha.
Avatar 2:45pm MissV:

Lou Reed ruined a movie experience for me as he snored through it's entirety!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm common:

great stuff!
Avatar 2:53pm KP:

joe is close! Pledge!
Avatar 2:55pm KP:

Less than $70 away PLEDGE!
Avatar 2:55pm KP:
