Curse you, Gottschalk! Dominique has been rattling around in my head aver since I heard it wafting out of Studio B earlier this afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Webhamster Henry:

Dominique is somewhat more interesting at 33RPM. But it's worth it to get through it faster.

Hello Kurt. I'm always surprised by how well Tom Johnson's music works despite the dry theory behind it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm

Man, everything I've heard from Tom Johnson jives w/ me.

I have this Crumb LP (got it for 50 cents at the Jacksonville library LP sale in 1998).

what's the shaking about, ngh?

Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning in. Much in store today, including a Lou Reed tribute in the second hour and a bunch of Albert Ayler for All Saint's Day in the third. And tickets to giveaway in a few minutes. Thanks for tuning in!

Fred, you beat me to the punch (said exactly what I was going to say seconds before I hit 'send')

@Fred: Great minds thing alike is what I was inferring using an English language meme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm

I think I'll hit the archives for the Ayler part. And probably flee when the Lou Reed tribute starts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
fred:

@ngh: I was afraid I had said something wrong for a moment...
I'm lucky enough to get exposure to Tom Johnson's music because he lives in Paris and has ties with my favorite venue. He also gives lectures at work once in a while, though I heard he dislikes the place. I've never been to one, weirdly enough
Avatar 3:34pm
the glowing one:

Oh, an album like Fantômas' Director's Cut, itneresting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
northguineahills:

The meme references when someone says nearly word for word what you were going to say, but the other person said the same exact thing seconds in advance. So, jokingly, one would shake their fist like an old man yelling at the clouds, and would have no affect, hence lending said protest, impotent.

So, you said exactly what I was going to say, and I saw it right as I hit preview. Everything I've heard from Tom Johnson sounds amazing, even if the theory can be a wee bit obtuse.

that's hot. (Ayler played by lucas on slide)

I like that much better than the score Philip Glass did for "Dracula", which plays under the Spanish version on the recently released DVD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm

@ngh: thanks, I didn't know about the fist shaking part of that

This is the second time in weeks I've heard the Mill Pond on WFMU in as many weeks. I have the original on vinyl.

@aaron: I work in a research institute about contemporary music in France, so country is a joke to them. As it was to me before Laura Cantrell taught me better

I was into IRCAM and other contemporary composition in my late teens. It took a few years into my 20s that I learned to love the soul of old Country music. (That was decade and a half ago.)

@ngh: Wow! There are not many teenagers who are into IRCAM, and I don't think it was all that different when you were one. Most people at shows there haven't been teenagers for half a century

Colson Whitehead's Zone One was hyped as "a zombie novel with brains", which turned out to be pretty accurate, because it really is a zombie novel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Caryn:

Um, didn't "Night of the Living Dead" hint that a weird meteor passing by was causing the zombies? Now, in "Dawn of the Dead" I agree that there is no cause.
Avatar 4:27pm
Mary Wing:

PAAAAAAAAAAAR-TAY!
Avatar 4:29pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

caryn - that is newscaster speculation in 'night' as i recall. george doesn't necessarily accept that as a part of the world myth he created.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Caryn:

Well, true, Kurt. But what I'm getting is that there are at least possible causes suggested. By the time we get to "Dawn of the Dead", it's just all about survival, and the cause is not important.
Avatar 4:31pm

Caryn, we're changing time on Saturday night, so get ready for shows starting an hour earlier. (and Hiya!!)

@Mary: the shows will start later for us, or rather go back to the usual time: most of Europe has already switched out of DST
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
Mike East:

has anyone played Ken Freedman's "Where's Lou Reed" bit from the Hoof n Mouth Sinfonia a few years ago? Love that piece.
Avatar 4:40pm
Carmichael:

Actually Mike, Ken played it on 7SD Wednesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
northguineahills:

@Fred: I think I got into the 50s-60s period of IRCAM. I purposely took music theory classes when I was in college just to be able to access the music college's graphic and aleatoric scores, as well as the the vinyl. (this was the mid 90s)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
Mike East:

for real Carmichael? How did I miss that? I thought they were just gabbing about Andy's twitter account the whole time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
northguineahills:

Irwin played, "where's Lou Reed" on Wednesday, Mike. Or, maybe Carmichael's correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
Mike East:

jesus - I listened to that show, too. I gotta stop working while I doing important things like listening to the radio. Just getting way to distracted here.
Avatar 4:45pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

yes! no more working while listening to wfmu! we demand your full attention!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm

Actually, if memory serves, Irwin played it at the end of his set merging into 7sd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm

there's important stuff going on here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
northguineahills:

Ok, I'm drain bamaged, it was Scott Williams that played, "Where is Lou", by Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
Caryn:

@Mary: what fred said. I'm happily anticipating the time shift this weekend, because then my listening schedule can get back to normal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm
Mike East:

I think we're all a little brain bamaged here. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm
Caryn:

And now I need to go to the archives of... well, one of the shows mentioned, to listen to the "Where is Lou" bit. Later, of course. I'm not going to miss the 3rd hour of Kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm

It's the last 6 minutes of Scott's last Monday show, Caryn.
