The Bombay Royale: Australia's Retro-Bollywood Idols
Plus Highlights from Golden Fest 2013

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

The world's best retro-Bollywood band just may be from Australia. Melbourne's The Bombay Royale channels the Golden Age of Bollywood in song, dance and costume. The 11-piece juggernaut whirls through vintage classics as well as its own Bollywood-inspired songs. The Bombay Royale makes its US stage debut Sunday night at the season's biggest world music event: the prestigious globalFEST, a three-stage, twelve-band extravaganza at Webster Hall in the East Village, and then move on to play Washington DC's Kennedy Center Millenium Stage free concert series on Monday night. But you'll hear them here first, when these Melbourne Masala mirthmakers unleash their musical mayhem here on WFMU this Saturday night!
Huge thanks to our illustrious engineers Rob Christiansen, Glenn Luttman and Ben Gottesman and helpers Kim, Mariam and Tony B! And to Patrice Mazzone from BPM Publicity in Australia for making it possible.

PLUS - next week Transpacific Sound Paradise returns to the biggest Balkan music and dance event of the year, Golden Fest (not to be confused with globalFEST!), for a live remote broadcast on Saturday night. Tonight we'll hear highlights from the 2013 Golden Fest (many of which you can download for free from the Free Music Archive).

...picture of Bombay Royale fairly shouts: Fun !!...Kavala Band is fun...I sense a theme...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Kristina Koffee:

Tuned in right as Kavala Brass Band was on... Thank you Rob again for airing this awesome music. :)
  6:40pm Anthony Olszewski:

Was I like in a flashback or did the electric organ riff sound a lot like a section of Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Rob W:

Thanks Kristina, good evening everyone, thanks for listening! Hope you can stick around for the Bombay Royale in the beginning of the next hour, they're pretty fabulous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Rob W:

Anthony - Choban Elektrik does use a Hammond organ just like Steppenwolf did... a bit unusual for a Balkan-style band!
Avatar 6:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...maybe someone from Persia told them about magic carpets in the Balkans...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Kristina Koffee:

Did I hear correctly? Golden fest is next week? Hopefully this year I'll be able to make it out in person - I always listen to the broadcast and realize I've missed it. It sounds like so much fun!
Avatar 7:06pm Whooda Hellameye:

...& I love *this* 'Country Joe & the Fish' 60sPsych sounding organ by way of Semi-Imaginary Bollywood...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Rob W:

Thanks Broken Ice Skater, yes, amazing job especially by engineers Rob C and Glenn to make an 11-piece band sound great in our small live performance room.
  7:46pm Mike Sin:

The Bombay Royale set sounded exceptional -- performance and engineering were both great. Cheers to Glenn Lutman. What a pro.
Avatar 7:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...was reminded right away of B52s somehow - & think we got a direct nod to 'Rock Lobster' in there; also reminded of 'costume' - cosplay? - Ska &/or Punk acts like - I dunno - Aquabats - but! - quite happy to leave the comparisons behind for a band notably unique as this...)
- Thx Bombay Royale !! : )
  7:46pm ilTofa:

The Bombay Royale are impressive and so it's the sound quality of the live!
Kudos and greetings from Italy!
  7:49pm jade:
