Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:59am Brian in UK:

Hello glenn. Are they sending your mayor to Siberia to try that twelve steppe programme? He could join Boris there.
Avatar 🥁 9:00am duke:

Good morning drummer and drummer folks. Looking forward to mire Yusef

Coming up next is ANOTHER symphonic piece by Yusef. Recorded 24 years earlier with THE SAME orchestra, the Kölner Radiofunkorchester (Cologne Radio Orchestra).

Hooray to you, paula pc! You can bet I will be doing a Yusef birthday show on or around 9 October.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:30am Gary:

Buried at work, but tuned in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

Gary, if you are really buried, you need to spit to see which way is "down," then dig "up" in the opposite direction! We'll send the dogs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

The "University of the Piano," the great Barry Harris at the keys here.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37am Gary:

If I spit again, it will remain on my permanent record, I'm afraid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

If your permanent record is below you, then dig UP, man!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am Gary:

Good advice. :)

If you're buried in a underwater cave, just follow the bubbles.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:40am Uncle Michael:

I'm going crate digging for permanent records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Good point, Artie!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42am Jeff Golick:

Great post on the African-American Epic Suite here: neverenoughrhodes.blogspot.com... -- including a few pages of YL's scores.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:47am Gary:

Cool, thanks for that, Jeff!
Avatar 9:47am earrie:

Maybe YL themed shows could occasionally flower on your show beyond the single annualar bday? And/or in sets?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48am Uncle Michael:

Words evolve. "Jazz" hasn't connoted the male seed for many generations. I get it...but I'm not going to worry too much about it.
Avatar 9:48am earrie:

Er, 'annular'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

It's a deal, earrie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Webhamster Henry:

Thanks for the Lateef - no reason not to go back to this material from time to time. Of course, there are many , many others deserving of attention and airplay, which is the whole point of GTDS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy Webham Hen!

More Yusef on oboe. Maybe his greatest oboe performance ever on record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

The truth is, aside from annual specials and such, I still have played more Yusef that any other artist in my 30+ years on the air. That won't stop now.
Avatar 9:55am still b/p:

Hiya.
I really liked the Lazy Afternoon this morning. I'm an oboe liker, too, right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Coming up soon in this set, Yusef performing my all-time favorite song, "Lover Man." Also, a tiny snippet from the soundtrack to the 1963 film "The Cool World." The music is by Mal Waldron and the band performing it includes Yusef Lateef with Dizzy Gillespie.
Avatar 9:57am glenn:

sweet, sweet oboe likker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings still b/p! Glad you dig the oboe. So hard to keep in tune on improvisations like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

@earrrie
I like annualar more better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef on tenor here behind Bill H. More tenor coming next on "Lover Man." Much tenor.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

This Moanin' was probably cut pretty close to the original Timmons version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Maybe a year later? Did Timmons debut it with Blakey in '58?
Avatar 10:02am earrie:

And perennials, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Next up is just a short section I recorded from the Shirley Clarke's amazing 1963 film, The Cool World. Just a taste.

RIP also to pittsburgh police dog rocco, killed in the line of duty: www.post-gazette.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James from Westwood
Flags are flying at half-staff today in Pittsburgh for Rocco. I just told my dog all about it before beginning the show. She looked sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef back on tenor sax here in Slide Hampton's crew. Such a warm, loving tone. Always in "blues" mode. Waves of love washing over you is how Yusef's tenor sax sound feels to me. Toward the end of the show today I will play my all-time favorite bravura performance on tenor. From a live session. Get ready to rock.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:13am holland oats:

a lighter link from the same source as the rocco story: apparently there are some good options for chinese food in the squirrel hill district of pittsburgh: www.post-gazette.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef welcomes the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Choir on this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
Don't believe the hype about the Asian food in Pittsburgh. We live in Squirrel Hill (which, aside from being the city's Jewish neighborhood, has tons of Asain restaurants) and the food ain't all that.
Avatar 10:25am Lewis:

here w/ eyes only for a while yet as this morning called for an extensive Moondog session - prompted by homesickness and a need to hear his ode to New Amsterdam on Sax Pax...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

That's such a brilliant record, Lewis!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29am listener james from westwood:

roger that. must be a tough comparison vs. the asian options in the nyc area.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:30am listener james from westwood:

i remember my first orders from the chinese joints around boston college. they were lacking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

@LJFW
EXACT-ly. Trying to compare to NYC is still, even almost four years after moving (boo-hoo!) still depressing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jeff Golick:

I would like a choir to follow me around chanting my name.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36am listener james from westwood:

fortunately boston did have a chinatown (not sure if it's still the same size what with gentrification; it was near the combat zone iirc), plus some stellar sit-down chinese places like chef chang's house (RIP) that were above the ones that catered to students. but your local delivery options were basically desperation measures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

Joining Yusef here are the J.C. White singers, with Al White at the organ.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36am Uncle Michael:

We do, Jeff...just very quietly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Yup, more Sweet Inspirations on this cut.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:48am Uncle Michael:

Jeff, today we're softly chanting "long live Destination:Out."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Ach, yeah. Thanks, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Don't let Uncle Michael read this story: www.dailykos.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56am Uncle Michael:

Welcome to my world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

Avery Sharpe on bass, Kamal Sabir on drums with YL here.
Avatar 11:00am still b/p:

Still a distinct Chinatown in Boston with plenty of restaurants. That don' t mean I et anything in 'em...just that they're there. Last full Chinatown meal I had was probably at Bob Lee's Islander, with its classically cheesy thatched booths and gaudy little pools, in the early 70s. My intro to Chinese food. My friends and I were in a "hungry" state - know wh' I'm sayin? -- and a Pu-pu platter was a revelation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

My mother just emailed me. She's pissed that I'm not doing a Pete Seeger special.
  11:01am Zhz:

I was in Detroit the other month, partly to buy some records. Found 4 or 5 from Yusef, but for the life of me, could not find this one.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

WTF is up in Kansas...this time.
  11:07am Artie:

We did pretty well at the downtown Nicky's Thai Kitchen just a few weeks ago. (in Pitt for extended family Xmas gathering).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

@Zhz
Which one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Richard Williams ~ trumpet
Hugh Lawson ~ piano
Ernie Farrow ~ bass
Lex Humphries ~ drums

with Yusef
Avatar 11:15am Lewis:

the moondog -> yusef segue has been implemented smoothly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Artie
Nicky's Thai Kitchen is pretty good. Not, unfortunately, in my neighb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef would approve, Lewis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

The opening audio of the next set is

Not. To. Be. Missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef, speaking there deflecting the comment about himself to interpret the man's words as an example of the love inherent in his Ahmadiyya Muslim faith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef is in duet here with his long-time collaborator, percussionist Adam Rudolph (who I would have given three arms to have been).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

This is six months before Yusef's 93rd birthday; 8 months before his passing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

If Yusef Lateef had a "signature" number, it was "Yusef's Mood," a showpiece for the great molten engine of love behind all his music: his tenor saxophone and the blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Dead Mime Walking:

Got to sit all of about two feet from Adam Rudolph at the Stone a few months ago...he was a very high vibrating fellow. No wonder Yusef collaborated with him so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

@Dead Mime Walking
I've never met Rudolph, but he want to high school with my wife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

On Yusef's Mood:

Kenny Barron ~ piano
Bob Cunningham ~ bass
Albert "Tootie" "Kuumba' Heath ~ drums

and Yusef Lateef ~ tenor saxophone
